Abortion is the conclusion of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to viability. It can also happen unconsciously, which is known as a “miscarriage.” For centuries the Church accepted abortion and the law did not punish it. Anti-abortion laws began in the United States in the 19th century and in the 20th century many states banished abortion. Abortion laws have been passed for many reasons such as the concern for women’s health, the need of medical profession, culture and religious fear etc. Laws and court decisions toward abortions have changed and strongly influenced American politics and public opinions over the last 50 years. Even though court decisions are placing severe restrictions on abortions. However, more abortions that America allows, the more it seems to be accepted in today’s society. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the history of abortion, the severe court decisions and the effect on public opinions. Throughout history American’s opinions on abortion have been equally divided between the three options offered, whether abortion should be offered to those who want it any without limitations, offered with limitations or whether it should be prohibited. Even though Americans remain divided over the issue of abortion, the majority would like to see severer limits placed on abortions in the United States. According to a poll conducted by New York Times and CBS “democrats and women are more likely to prefer keeping abortion generally available to those who want it.” Thee, M. (2007, April 19). Abortion laws and related cases continue to be a major issue in today’s society and it will continue shaping American’s laws. American has too many unwanted children living in abusive homes and most of these children are physically, sexually and mentally abused daily. In conclusion, abortion is a big issue in all over the world. Abortion is preventing a human being from being born. Women who practice an abortion can encounter many consequences. A woman has to consider that she is putting her life, and the baby’s life at risk. However, some people think that having an abortion is a good idea. For this reason, the government has not completely abolished abortion because many women believe that nobody should interfere when it comes to making a decision over their body. They feel that their rights should not be violated.
