“Only when we have become nonviolent towards all life will we have learned to live well with others” (César Cháve). For hundreds of years, animals have been beaten, tortured, poked, and prodded to see how much pain they can endure and to see what experiments people can come up with will work. Scientists have used animals to test on for the creation of medicines and the chemicals that are put into those medicines; in addition, those medicines are used to find cures for diseases and to help out the human race. Companies have also used animals to test out experiments for the products they want to sell. Those companies need to see the effects that the product has on humans if the product is ingested or if it gets into a person’s eyes. animals for scientific research purposes; therefore, animal experimentation should be banned in the United States. There are many pros to animal testing and the positive effects it can have for humans.
One of the pros of animal testing are the scientific breakthroughs that have happened and life saving cures that have been found. Throughout the years, there have been many breakthroughs in the medical field; including; finding cures for diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and childhood leukemia. Discovering those cures have saved thousands upon thousands of adult and children lives. Another pro is that not many animals are used in the experimentation of medical research. “People in the United States eat 9 billion chickens and 150 million cattle, pigs and sheep annually, yet scientists only use around 26 million animals for research, 95% of which are rodents, birds and fish” (Holder, 1). Some animals are very similar to human beings, including monkeys, mice, and other rodents that share more than 97% genetics with human beings. Being so similar to other species means that the drug that is being tested on the animals may efficiently work on human beings as well, possibly with minor
alterations. There have been many scientific breakthroughs to find cures and treatments where animal testing was used. In the last 100 years, almost 100% of all medicines and cures were found by testing the products and medicines on animals. Many of the experiments that have tested products on animals have failed, however, and have not been able to be put on the shelves for the people to buy. Those animals had been poked with needles and injected with many, many chemicals for it all to go to waste. Studies say that more than 100 million animals are used for scientific research purposes every year. Of over 100 million animals used in laboratories, about 100 million of those animals die after the experiment is done or during the process of the experiment. It costs thousands of dollars for labs and researchers to keep those animals well fed, healthy, and places for the animals to live. On average, it costs about $16 billion dollars a year, out of taxpayers money and wallets, to keep up with the expenses needed to continue testing on animals. Animals may have very similar genetic features to humans, but not close enough for every medicine or vaccine to work on humans as well as the animal that it was being tested on. One experiment might work for the animal that the medicine or vaccine was being put into, but when it gets injected into a person, the outcome might not be the same as it was for the animal. Animals are structured very differently from humans, so there can’t be a certainty that there will be a positive effect on both of those species. Holder, Tom. “Guest Post on Animal Research: Animal Research Is an Ethical and Vital Tool to Fight Disease.” Bill of Health, 14 Jan. 2013, blogs.harvard.edu/billofhealth/2013/01/14/guest-post-on-animal-research-animal-research-is-an-ethical-and-vital-tool-to-fight-disease/.
Animals are used as a part of experimentations in order to accomplish new openings. A few individuals think that it is satisfactory, while others contend that it is not moral to sacrifice animals for science. Estimated, that fifty to one hundred million of animals are used for tests in the world. Despite the significance of experiments, the quantity of animals and purpose of research are not under any control. Animals testing should be banned under a few circumstances; we can enhance the situation by using alternative ways such as replacement, reduction, and refinement according to International Society for Applied Ethology.
Animal testing has been used for developing and researching cures for medical conditions. For example, the polio vaccine, chemotherapy for cancer, insulin treatment for diabetes, organ transplants and blood transfusions are just some of the important advances that have come from research on animals (“Animal Testing”). Consuming animals for research benefits in developing various treatments and also benefits in discovery better methods for cures. According to the article “Animal Testing”, it says that the underlying rationale for the use of animal testing is that living organisms provide interactive, dynamic systems that scientists can observe and manipulate in order to understand normal and pathological functioning as well as the effectiveness of medical interventions. It relies on the physiological and anatomical similarities between humans and other animals (MacClellan, Joel). Meaning that animals have the same body components and features as humans and is the best thing to research on to better understand the human development. Even though several argue that animal testing is harming the animals, one has to think back to all the benefits that has come from it. There may be a little remorse for endangering animal lives, but realizing how far medicine has come makes it worth the while.
Is animal testing really worth taking away animal’s valuable lives? No, I think it’s wrong, inhumane, and cruel. Animals have feelings like humans do and they should be treated with respect even though they are just animals. When animals are tested over time they live in cruel and harsh conditions. They are tied up and changed to their cages or devices they are being tested on. Almost all tests fail in humans and it is not worth sacrificing an animals life.Think about all the things animals have to go through all the harsh and cruel treatment. They are put in conditions where they are not allowed to eat or drink and move around. Is it really worth killing an animals for eyeliner that will never hit the market or for drugs that all fail in humans. So here are some of the reasons I think we should ban all animal testing.
Animal testing is an immoral, heinous, atrocious act. One should never put an animal before his own life; we are all here on earth due to some strand of evolution or the other, making prejudice and other discriminations (man or not) obsolete and meaningless. Those who would think themselves above another creature are each failures in their own individual way. The rights of animals cannot be questioned, it is an inalienable fact that most do not understand, when given thought that is free of bias and the plague of arrogance, as Arthur Schopenhauer once said: “The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.” In a society as unquestionably advanced as man, a society in which even the consumption of meat is an indulgence and in no way necessary, the duty of treating all life with anything more than a central nervous system is nothing less than a law.
Millions of animals are used to test consumer products, but they also become victims of experiments for medical research. In The Ethics of Animal Research (2007) both authors state that there have been many medical advances with the development of medicines and treatments as a result of research conducted on animals (para 1). These medical improvements have helped many people be able to enjoy life, but some people still believe that animal research is mean and avoidable .... ... middle of paper ... ...
“Over 1 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in U.S. labs” according to DoSomething.org. And although these animals may be considered protected under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) they are still able to be tortured and mistreated in labs. On top of all this, there is absolutely no guarantee that results and data collected from these procedures are accurate. Our anatomic builds are similar in ways but not at all interchangeable. Even though it has saved lives, animal experimentation should be banned because it is not a guarantee that these procedures are done pain free and humans and animals react differently to the medicines and chemicals used.
Animal testing is one the most beyond cruelty against animals. It is estimated about 7 million innocent animals are electrocuted, blinded, scalded, force-fed chemicals, genetically manipulated, killed in the name of science. By private institutions, households products, cosmetics companies, government agencies, educational institutions and scientific centers. From the products we use every day, such as soap, make-up, furniture polish, cleaning products, and perfumes. Over 1 million dogs, cats, primates, sheep, hamsters and guinea pigs are used in labs each year. Of those, over 86,000 are dogs and cat. All companies are most likely to test on animals to make patients feel safe and are more likely to trust medicines if they know they have been tested on animals first (PETA, N.D, page 1). These tests are done only to protect companies from consumer lawsuits. Although it’s not quite true, Humans and animals don’t always react in the same way to drugs. In the UK an estimated 10,000 people are killed or severely disabled every year by unexpected reactions to drugs, all these drugs have passed animal tests. Animal testing is often unpredictable in how products will work on people. Some estimates say up to 92 percent of tests passed on animals failed when tried on humans (Procon.org, 2014, page 1). Animal testing can’t show all the potential uses for a drug. The test results are...
Simple household items such as lotions, shampoos and cosmetics aren’t very expensive and are within reach for the public, yet the public is not knowledgeable of the fact that the products that they use everyday are put through a series of tests which involve the use of harmless animals. Several large commercial companies do not make products for animals; they decide that using these harmless creatures for the testing of their products, could be cause to be harmful to animals still go forward with these types of procedures on an everyday basis. Although these animals are unable to defend themselves or signs of any form of consent for the near death procedures, these companies find this as a cheap solution for testing their products before placing them on the market. There are many other alternatives to testing animals such as embryonic stem cell research. Animal experimentation is wrong and it can be avoided but companies which are greedy for money chose not to.
Animal testing can be really cruel thats why I’m against it. Every year more than 100 million animals die because of testing. About 90% of labs that are used for animal testing are not counted in the official statistics for the U.S.
Hundreds of millions of animals die every year from animal testing in the United States. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories for biology advancements, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing. They are used to provide information to make better products that are safe for human use. Although animal experimentation has some benefits, the negatives outweigh the positives. Animal testing is killing off innocent beings for the possible human benefit, and with modern technology, there are alternative ways to test products that leave animals unharmed.
Every year, millions of animals experience painful, suffering and death due to results of scientific research as the effects of drugs, medical procedures, food additives, cosmetics and other chemical products. Basically, animal experimentation has played a dominant role in leading with new findings and human advantages. Animal research has had a main function in many scientific and medical advances in the past decade and is helping in the understanding of several diseases. While most people believe than animal testing is necessary, others are worried about the excessive suffering of this innocent’s creatures. The balance between the rights of animals and their use in medical research is a delicate issue with huge societal assumptions. Nowadays people are trying to understand and take in consideration these social implications based in animals rights. Even though, many people tend to disregard animals that have suffered permanent damage during experimentation time. Many people try to misunderstand the nature of life that animals just have, and are unable to consider the actual laboratory procedures and techniques that these creatures tend to be submitted. Animal experimentation must be excluded because it is an inhumane way of treat animals, it is unethical, and exist safer ways to test products without painful test.
Animal testing is cruel and unreasonable! Animals are a total different species, then humans. What may work for humans. May cause animals' problems, or even in some cases death. Not only is testing on animals risky its cost is dramatically higher!
Animals are used in research to develop new medicines and for scientists to test the safety of the medicines. This animal testing is called vivisection. Research is being carried out at universities, medical schools and even in primary and elementary schools as well as in commercial facilities which provide animal experiments to industry. (UK Parliament) In addition, animals are also used in cosmetic testing, toxicology tests, “defense research” and “xenotransplantation”. All around the world, a huge amount of animals are sentenced to life in a laboratory cage and they are obliged to feel loneliness and pain. In addition scientists causing pain, most drugs that pas successfully in animals fail in humans. It is qualified as a bad science. Above all, animals have rights not to be harmed even though the Animal Welfare Act does not provide them even with minimal protection. The law does not find it necessary to use current alternatives to animals, even if they are obtainable. Animal testing should be banned due to animal rights, ethical issues, alternative ways and the unreliability of test results in humans.
However, the advantages outlined here far outweigh any negative outcomes to using animals as compared to testing on human beings. Animal research is necessary and important in this ever-changing world. It is our responsibility to balance the protection of these animals while at the same time preserving the human race. Not only is animal testing less expensive but the similarities between animals and humans lends itself to the discovery of many new treatments, medications and cures as well as prolonging life for both species. For many years there has been controversy whether or not animals should be tested on between scientists and animal right supporters. It is very debatable if animals should be tested on when a cure for a disease could be found from testing on animals. From my own personal view I have a huge heart for animals, but if we can not find other alternatives, and is possible we can find cures for diseases, then animals may be used for research, but only for medical reasons.
