Ever since I was five, I have lived in Preston County, WV. First of all, a lot of people do not know where Preston County is. Second of all, there are more people than I would like to admit who do not even know that West Virginia is a state. Therefore, there exists many stereotypes, unique qualities, and misunderstandings for my region. I will explain three characteristics of Preston County that have made an impression on my life. First, I will tell a little story about what happened to me two semesters ago. Kaitlyn Workman and I were running in Wheeling, WV along the local bike trail. A man on a bike rode up to us and asked where we attended school and where we were from. Kaitlyn and I told him that we were from Preston County. Once we told
him this piece of information, he gave us a puzzled look and asked if we wore shoes in Preston County. Obviously Kaitlyn and I were running in shoes at the time, and because we are kind and civil human beings, we simply laughed as a response to his comment. Ironically, this was not the first time I have heard that question. I do not understand where the barefoot stereotype came from, but I will say that it is not true. I assume that because Preston County contains several farm areas, outsiders believe that we are poor and prefer walking around barefoot. I will admit that I have taken off my sandals to feel the cool grass between my toes, but that does not mean that it is a regular occurrence throughout my everyday life. Furthermore, because Preston County contains farmland, everyone would prefer to wear shoes. Who would want to step in cow feces or fertilizer barefoot? Second, I have to talk about the food found in Preston County. There is a magical food called a pepperoni roll that can be found in West Virginia in general. Preston County definitely has an abundancy of pepperoni rolls. If one was to attend a sporting event in West Virginia or Preston County, I am sure that pepperoni rolls would be sold. Pepperoni rolls are made of greasy, warm dough wrapped around pepperoni slices. Also, pepperoni rolls may contain different cheeses. I have even had one that had banana peppers in it. I feel bad for those who have not tried one. Furthermore, there is a food that is quite popular in Preston County known as buckwheat cakes. They are similar to pancakes because they are meant to be a breakfast food served with butter and syrup along with sausage links on the side. However, buckwheat cakes are made out of buckwheat, which might be a contribution to their given name. Buckwheat cakes are so popular in Preston County that there is a festival held in Kingwood, WV called the Buckwheat Festival. It lasts for four days and is filled with fair food, farm animals, parades, and, of course, buckwheat cakes. Those who are not from Preston County may have a hard time enjoying buckwheat cakes due to their sour taste, but locals love them.
While both the people of the New England region and of the Chesapeake region descended from the same English origin, by 1700 both regions had traveled in two diverse directions. Since both of these groups were beset with issues that were unique to their regions and due to their exposure to different circumstances, each was forced to rethink and reconstruct their societies. As a result, the differences in the motivation, geography, and government in the New England and Chesapeake regions caused great divergence in the development of each.
Although West Virginia is mostly frowned upon, its positive side is key to many parts the nation, from people to places to things. One of the stand-out athletes that have come from West Virginia is the famous football player named Sam Huff. As you can see, modern celebrities and historical figures have both came from West Virginia. All the listed people are highly respected and honored nationwide and known around the world. To be respected, you have to have respect for other and while growing up in West Virginia, I have learned that when you come from a small town, you seem to have a different perspective on everyday life.
The major geographic and map characteristics of my neighborhood, the local area, and the regional terrain as well as the landscape, are all reason why Vineland is different from the surrounding areas. How strong urbanism plays a role in the development of Vineland and Cumberland County. As well as how, I believe, Vineland is a formal region. How the boundaries of the region appear in broad zones of transition instead of sharply defined zones. Also the impact of Hurricane Sandy to the state of New Jersey and the rest of the Northeast United
The Chesapeake region and New England colonies greatly differed in their development of their two distinct societies. The Chesapeake region was a loosely fitted society with little connection with each plantation while the New England colonies had tightly knitted communities with a sort of town pride. The difference in unity and the reason for this difference best explain the significant disparity between the dissimilar societies.
So what is Appalachia? Appalachia is no different from any other person in this world. The people had to struggle just as bad as some of us did, but were criticized because they lived in the mountains or away from other people. They didn’t know that once they sold their land for the oil miners that they would loose everything and eventually be run out from their own homes. They couldn’t help being poor or not being able to go to school and get the proper education like most of us got. So why do we still have these same stereotypes now as they had before? One description was that they walked barefoot and I guess I’m part of the Appalachian region because I walk outside almost everyday barefoot even though I had my thoughts about which Appalachian people were. Appalachia is part of our history that people don’t know much about or they wouldn’t have these stereotypes.
I ended up going to the high school there for my final high school on my trip through the education system, but as luck would have it I was too old to graduate with a high school diploma which I thought was ridiculous I was only 19, but they ended up enrolling me into a GED course which sort of prepared me to take the test to get my GED. In this little town that we had moved to was also small and let’s just say that it was like Strathmore to Porterville. It was a little bit away and the only way to get there was by car. We lived way out on the sticks in a trailer park community, it was a nice community my uncle had lived there for many years.

The Appalachian population extends across thirteen states in the United States including: Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. These regions are divided into categories of Northern Appalachia, Central Appalachia and Southern Appalachia. West Virginia is the only state that is entirely within Appalachia.1 The environment these individuals encounter is within the mountains, valley and rivers with varying degrees. There are few cities within this culture and many still live in small communities.
The number one reason I love West Virginia is because all my family lives here. Moving away would mean missing out on those Sunday lunches at grandmas’, and the annual holiday gatherings. My family is a close knit family who enjoy spending time together even though we do argue. West Virginia as a whole prides itself on their strong family values. I as a West Virginia citizen, have adopted these family values and could never leave the people and state I love the most.
Virginia’s selfish ways did not lead them to accomplishment. The colonists of Chesapeake completely ignored the ways of establishing a community simply because of their hunger for land and greed for profit; Prosperity was not visible down their road. Massachusetts Bay’s unity enabled a strong, sturdy, and successful colony.
Gender Stereotypes Civilization is full of expectations and interpretations about an individual mainly because of their gender. For several years, the lives of women have been defined by societal female stereotypes. Today’s world has labels and stereotypes for almost every human individual. Stereotypes create boundaries on how someone is supposed to act in the world around them. The Last of the Mohicans is not different than every other piece of work due to the fact that stereotypes of the female role are present throughout the whole book and the movie.
New experiences shock and captivate readers consequently prompting a reassessment of their perceptions of respect, truth and friendship. Tim Wintons short story “Neighbours” confronts individual stereotypes through exploring the multicultural context in which the story is set. Winton explores the transition of a “young couple” into a new phase of life by describing their move to a lower socio economic suburb full of “European migrants”. The composer does not name the characters, rather calls them the “Macedonian Family” and the “Polish man”, in order to show their cultural differences and highlight multiculturalism. Through the development of the short story, Winton shows how the young couple transition and develop their societal perspectives
There are stereotypes that accompany each state. Californians are stereotyped as surfers. New Yorkers are labeled as rude and always in a hurry. I have lived in the wonderful state of Texas all my life and have heard many different Texas stereotypes over the years. Some stereotypes are somewhat true while, majority of the Texas labels are ridiculous. I will discuss a few of the most popular Texas stereotypes I’ve encountered.
British Stereotypes in America Let’s face it, in the United States, we do not understand cricket, we do not understand tea, and we certainly do not understand hidden emotions. Of course there is more to Britain than these cultural icons, just like America is not just made of cowboys from “Dallas” and loud egotistic tourists. However, in the year 2000, there are still several myths surrounding the British culture that are very much alive today. Many people in the U.S. and I am sure many other countries tend to think of Britain as a land full of rose gardens, cricket, Oxford, and people drinking tea with their little pinky in the air with the Queen.
