The United States presidential election of 2016 that is going to happen on November 8th has been an important issue for all the citizens to paid attention on for the past few months. The two most well-known candidates for the election of this year are Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton. Both of the candidates presented their thought and ideas to the voters through presidential debates. In addition, there are three presidential debates before the election. After watching the debates, I think the presidential debate format should be modify in order to articulate a better deliverable and understanding of each presidential candidates’ view and proposition. This essay will accomplish this objective by analyzing each debates, provide suggestions …show more content…
The first presidential debate uses a format that is more complicate than the second debate. In this format, the debate was break into six segments; each segment will have fifteen minutes. In these fifteen minutes, the candidates will have a chance to answer the question that the moderator asked. The moderator is the person who “acts as a neutral party who maintains the focus of the debate. Important skills include time management, organization, and the ability to communicate effectively” (Balle). During the segment, the candidates will have two minutes each to answer the question and ten minutes to respond to each other’s responds. While the first presidential debate used a complicate format, the second debate used a more simple and popular format, which is the town hall format. The town hall format originally started in 17th-century New England meeting houses, and invites everyone to the table, even those who perhaps shouldn’t be given the mic. The purpose of town hall format is for the people to agree on something that would benefit everyone, and the …show more content…
CPD did their best to ensure voters can understand the candidates. However, I still believe there are some parts of the debate format that can be improved. Firstly, there should be a plan for the candidates about the time issue. During the second presidential debate, it was obvious that two minutes was not enough for both candidates to state their thought on a certain issue. Compare with the first and third presidential debate, the second debate is missing the ten minutes for candidates to responds to their answers. As a result, the moderators had to remind the candidates several times before they stop speaking. I believe, have a plan ready for this type of situation can prevent the waste of time on asking candidates to move on and allow the citizens to ask more questions. Secondly, prepare someone who has more experience on crisis handling or good at improvising as moderator. As mentioned before, the second presidential debate has a serious issue on timing, and the major issue was because the moderator cannot stopped candidates from responding to each other. If the moderator could terminate the responses between the candidates when the next
concerning domestic questions, the second was centered around the area of foreign policy, and the third and fourth debates were basically a repetition of previous topics. During each debate four news representatives asked questions to each candidate. On September 26, 1960, the first debate took place in Chicago. The The moderator was Howard K. Smith, and his job was to introduce the candidates. and controlled the question and answer segments of the debates.
The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are considered among “the most significant statements in American political history” (Johannsen). The debates derived from the senatorial campaign in 1858 between Stephen Douglas, the Democratic senator, and Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate. The two politicians debated publicly throughout seven of Illinois’ nine congressional districts. By Election Day on November 2nd, Illinois citizens were aware of the primary issues of each man’s political stance (Schulmeister).
It will be very interesting to see how each candidate performs in the debate. Nonetheless, the 1992 election provides some valuable lessons in campaign strategy, which both Gore and Bush may want to consider.
The presidential debate is all about persuading Americans to be best equipped to make the lives of the American citizens better. The candidates running for office must persuade the American citizens that they are the right man or woman to successfully turn the nation in the right direction. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are both in the running to become the next President of the United States. During their Presidential debate, both Clinton and Trump used rhetorical appeals to gain the voters’ attention and their vote. Rhetorical appeals include 3 elements of persuasion: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.
Prompt 1: Who won the debate & why? Based on the performance and content of the presidential debate, Hillary Clinton emerged the winner. A debate is a typical adversarial argument, which is characterized by competition. There is one winner and one loser. The argument revolves around two people who have different or opposite ways of thinking, arguing on the same topic.

There wouldn’t be another televised presidential debate until 1976, which was 16 years later. The reason why the next televised presidential debate was so far away was because none of the next presidential candidates wanted to take on the media. In 1964 Lyndon B. Johnson was too scared of the media to take on Barry Goldwater. In 1968 and 1972 Nixon refused to debate knowing he had already been burned when he agreed to debate with Kennedy. But in 1976 televised debates made a comeback when Gerald Ford agreed to debate against Jimmy Carter. The United States had used televised presidential debates ever since.
In the midst of one of the most controversial presidential elections in history, both political parties are struggling to prove that their candidate is the best choice. Clinton and Trump’s disapproval ratings are very low, but one has to ask, is there really a lesser evil to choose from? While Clinton has had her own fair share of past discrepancies, Trump’s track record proves much more troublesome. Donald Trump has proven to be an untrustworthy presidential candidate because of his misogynistic actions, his racial bias, and his corrupt business history.
In Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns polygamous culture is highly accepted and legal. This acceptance stems from Mariam’s own father Jalil had 4 wives, but could not bring himself to accept his illegitimate child. Rasheed and Mariam’s marriage becomes a polygamous one when he coerces Laila into marriage. Polygamy is legal in over 100 countries mostly in the middle east and third world countries of africa. Attitudes toward polygamy in countries like the US and UK greatly contrast those in the middle East, but as TV shows like Sister wives become more accepted so does the idea. The practice of polygamy has caused some debate in the 20th century; and with the new legislation legalizing gay marriage one might say the legalization of
“Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand.” This reflective quote by Colin Powell exemplifies the true values that a person in command should have. After watching the first presidential debate and the third presidential debate, it was evident that there were some flaws in the answering of some questions that were asked by both of the candidates. From both debates, I conclude that Hillary Clinton as doing the most thorough job of answering the questions. I feel that this is true because of her giving more straight forward answers, her better temperament, and the details she included in her answers.
In Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, Neil Postman writes, “For one thing, its attention span would obviously have been extraordinary by current standards. Is there any audience of Americans today who can endure seven hours of talk? or five. or three. Postman 47” to highlight the contrast between Americans in the 1800’s to Americans today. He posits a simple question, could today’s Americans stay engaged in oral discourse spanning multiple hours?

Like in the first essay i had to use the skill of expand and explain without changing any facts of the source. In this essay i had a lot of help from my background knowledge as a student that hopes to pursue in a career in politics i understand the majority of why the candidates did what they did. I believe that the analyzing portion of the essay was much more difficult than the first one because there is so much more aspects to be aware of like lighting and tone of
The airing of presidential debates on television is another very crucial part of the election process today. They are a chance for the public to see the candidates speak about vital current issues and their stance on political subjects. They are also a major deciding factor for voters. For example we can contrast the election between Kennedy and Nixon in 1960 and the election between Gore and Bus...
The topic Noah reported on is an important one to me and most likely anyone else who is planning on voting in the next presidential election. The democratic debate was a way for American citizens all over the country to see all five of the candidates in one place, to see where the candidates stand on national issues, and how they respond to each other’s views and opinions on the matters. The debate will help democratic
