Ensuring that an adequate amount of healthy, nutritious foods are available for people is one of the most critical challenges facing humanity. One of the various challenges include food preserving. Food can easily be preserved with today's technology, but sometimes these methods aren't always the healthiest and most natural way to sustain the food's nutritional value. How can we help to reduce the amount of food waste? Together we can help to feed the world.
What would happen if we used more healthy, nutritious ways to preserve food? To keep food fresh from preventing bacterial and fungal growth, artificial preservatives were invented. Even though natural preservatives are abundant and ready to use, most food products still opt for the artificial variety. These preservatives are claimed to be safe, but the truth is, once the food is high on artificial preservatives , then you are in the danger zone. Once we as humans, consume more of these foods high on artificial preservatives , we will end up destroying our health in big proportions. Sulfur dioxide is used in fresh fruits, wines and dried fruits and vegetables in order for these products to avoid turning brown longer. But sulphates are linked with hyperactivity and causes trouble breathing. Nitrates are used to bring up the flavor to a higher notch. Large uses of nitrates is very fatal to your health. Nitrate is bad for your blood because it will be converted in your blood to form a hard substance that makes it difficult for the blood to transport oxygen. Many foods use Butyrate hydroxyanisole as a preservatives. But with this preservative , you are more prone to get tumors and cancer. High cholesterol , hyperactivity, asthma attacks, and some other disorders ...

...dea when and how you'll use the food you buy. If you are taking advantage of sales or buying items in bulk, the same rule applies. Don't overdue it, be sure to purchase an reasonable amount. Before taking off to the supermarket, know what food you have know what you don't need to buy. Take inventory of what is in the freezer, refrigerator cupboards. Also, make sure to have somewhat of an idea on when you plan on using your food. If we're cautious about the amount of food wastage, we can help keep our food supply plentiful.
One of the most critical challenges facing humanity is ensuring that enough healthy, wholesome food is available for everyone. Can it be that preserving food can be healthier by using a natural way, rather than a artificial way to sustain the food's nutritional value. Just think what would happen if we COULD feed the whole world!
The majority of people waste food on a daily basis. In fact, in the U.S. alone there is an estimate that over half of the food produced goes uneaten; meanwhile there are people who are in need of food, and it ultimately goes to waste (Dockterman). For example, in his essay, “On Dumpster Diving,” author Lars Eighner writes about his experiences of dumpster diving with his pet dog, during his years of homelessness. According to Eighner, much of the food and materials he came across in the dumpsters were in usable shape, and many items were new. Clearly there needs to be a change in American food waste, in current and, hopefully not so much in, future generations.
Food science has led to find cures for diseases such as scurvy. Scurvy is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C, characterized by swollen bleeding gums and the opening of previously healed wounds, which particularly affected poorly nourished sailors until the end of the 18th century. This disease was very common among sailors because in the 18th century they didn’t have refrigerators, so their diets lacked perishable foods while sailing the sea. Today, if you come across this problem you can just eat a vitamin C tablet. This is just one of the many examples food science has promoted a balanced diet by the study of nutrients in our food. Food science has also done some damage to people’s diets by replacing fresh food in our supermarkets to aisles of boxed and frozen food that lack nutrients in them This problem was noticed in 1977 when a document called Dietary Goals for the United States was created after rates of coronary heart disease had soared in America since World War II. In 1977, the lipid hypothesis, it proposes that dietary or saturated fat causes heart disease by raising the concentration of cholesterol in the blood. Government has been changing the Dietary Guidelines for the United States quite often which proves not even scientists know everything about nutrition. Nutritionism has led to the creation of processed foods which has been
Michael Pollan makes arguments concerning the eating habits of the average American. Pollan suggests, in spite of our cultural norms, we should simply “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.”
According to Roni Neff, Marie Spiker, and Patricia Truant, up to 40% of all food produced in America is thrown away (Neff, Spiker, & Truant, 2015, p.2). This wasted food is worth hundreds of billions of dollars that is lost each year in the United States alone, and creates many threats to our country. Food waste is an important and widespread issue in the United States because most of the food thrown away is perfectly fine, it could be used to feed the hungry, and the waste hurts the environment.
In order for us to maintain our lives, we need to consume food to supply nutrient-needs for our bodies. As the global population increased, the demand for food also increased. Increased population led to mass production of foods. However, even with this mass production, in under-developed countries, people are still undernourished. On other hand, in developed and developing countries, people are overfed and suffering from obesity. In addition, the current methods of industrial farming destroy the environment. These problems raised a question to our global food system. Will it be able to sustain our increasing global population and the earth? With this question in my mind, I decided to investigate the sustainability of our current global food system.
Food has been a common source of necessity in our everyday lives as humans. It helps gives us nutrition and energy to live throughout our life. Over several decades, the development of making foods has evolved. They have changed from natural to processed foods in recent years. Nowadays natural ingredients are barely used in the making of foods like bread, cheese, or yogurt. The food industry today has replaced natural food making with inorganic ingredients. The cause of this switch is due to processed foods being easier, cheaper and faster to make. Artificial nutrition and processed foods have been proven to last longer in market shelves then natural foods. Also, due to artificial additives in processed foods they help satisfy consumers taste more than natural ingredients. The method of producing processed foods is common in today's food industry and helps make money faster and efficiently for companies. Examples of this can be found in all markets that distribute food. Even though processed foods may be easier and faster to make, they are nowhere near as healthy for consumers compared to natural foods. Natural foods are healthier, wholesome, and beneficial to the human body and planet then processed foods.
America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
I have chosen the topic of food waste and the impact on the environment. I will discuss the ridiculous amount of food that is wasted each year and the staggering amount of waste that could be avoided just by planning ahead, and purchasing from farmer’s markets and avoiding the main stream supermarkets who set such high standards on the aesthetic of produce that tonnes are wasted for no reason other then shape.
If all of the four steps are followed accordingly, a person can decrease their chances of obtaining a food borne illness and even something as simple as a common cold. Eating is something that we do multiple times a day, it is very important that we take these steps very seriously because we may not just be harming only ourselves but others as well. As individuals we must do our part by ensuring that we properly handle and prepare our meals. It is also important that departments like the FDA and USDA do their part in the process as well. If our food is regulated and monitored and we do our part, there is a very good chance that we can avoid getting sick and live healthier lives.
The term “food wastage” can be defined as the discarding of food or making any non-use of food that is safe and healthy for human consumption. It is a recognized as a form of food loss since the specific drivers that cause it are different from the ones that generate the solution. The food wastage is a major concern all around the globe that has an adverse impact on the overall environment and the quality of life of mankind. According to OzHarvest, enough food is produced around the globe to feed all the people but one-third of this food is lost or wasted which comes to around 1.3 billion tonnes of food (The Nest - wearethenest.com, 2017). About half of all the produced fruits and vegetables are wasted. If the wastage of food is effectively controlled, it is assumed that it could save almost 4.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum (Booth & Whelan,
There has been a cultural adjustment to organic farming and eating that is critical for future human and environmental benefits for three reasons. First reason is that a person’s health counts on good food being consumed into the body. Organic foods do not contain any artificial colors, preservatives, flavors, or pesticides making them healthier for Consumers. The EPA makes an educated guess that approximately 90% of all fungicides, 60% of all herbicides, and 30% of all pesticides are all chemicals found in conventionally grown agriculture, and these chemicals causes cancer, and organic food does not have these malicious substances. The bottom line is that these chemicals are toxic poisonous designed to kill living organisms and
Food waste is defined by food that is lost, wasted, or discarded and is caused through a few different processes. Food is wasted through many different ways at farms, grocery stores, and in homes. Over 40% of the food in the United States, specifically, goes to waste and 97% percent of this waste goes straight to landfills. The main issue with food waste is that the majority of food is being wasted unnecessarily. In stores, food is often thrown out because it does not meet specific standards that dictate what may be desirable to consumers. This issue of food picking is important as foods are not always being thrown away because they have gone bad, but because they have appearances that do not seem attractive. If we hope to lessen the environmental impact we have as a result of the mass
Many people have not thought about how their actions on wasting will affect the world, but we really should stop and think about what effect wasting will have. Food that didn’t get used and “went bad” end up in landfills, and all of the solid waste produces methane gas. “Restrictions for giving away food past its sell-by date have been removed, and business owners will pay less waste tax the more they donate,” (“Focus on Quality”). Do you know why certain things are happening now, like global warming? Do you know what is helping to increase global warming? Food waste is contributing to global warming. “Agricultural production in general produces emissions, for example, by land conversion or overuse of fertilizer, emissions from agriculture cannot be completely avoided,” (“How reducing food”). Global warming is a big problem, but if we can control how much food we waste in the future, then we won’t contribute to global warming as much as we have been. Food waste starts at the farms, but it’s not as much as in homes, or when the food is in storage, or being shipped out. Over half of the food waste happens during the storage phase, when the food is being stored and waiting to go to stores, and the rest happens when the product is going to grocery stores, and houses. If we can recycle food waste, then we can reduce the amount of methane gas is being put into the atmosphere, and we can help to slow the amount of waste goes into the landfills. "We're trialling two options, one is composting food waste with green waste, the other is processing food waste only in a facility that produces biogas,” (“A
Food Preservation is the ways to retain the food quality in a longer times. It is to prevent the food decomposition and fermentation. Besides that, food preservation not only to prevent the food getting spoilt in a long period of time but also preserved the colour, taste and the food nutritive value. Nowadays, food preservation has become more and more important component in the food industry as the consumers expect that able to purchase those foods that are out of season or imported from other countries. Furthermore, there are few reason why food preservation is important in our daily life such as preservation foods when they are in season it may added variety choices in our meals for example smoke meats and
The demand for easy to prepare and convenience of food create major scientific and technological challenges that cannot be fulfilled without experts scientific capable of understanding complex chemistry or biochemistry of food system and knowledge about method to preserved food which increases dependability of society towards ready-to-eat has led the greater responsibility for processors in terms of quality, safety and nutrition (McGill, 2011).
