Oprah Winfrey has been quoted saying “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity”. First of all, what is luck? Luck has been defined as when something happens by chance. Some say luck can be seen in two ways, good luck or bad luck. What I believe Oprah Winfrey is saying, is that luck is luck, you have the ability to make it good or bad. To me “preparation meeting opportunity” means being prepared, being prepared for opportunities that may come your way or open up for you. The way I see it, a person can define their own luck by the way they prepare themselves, they can either prepare themselves to succeed or fail. If a person knows what they want out of life and has prepared themselves to succeed, when something happens by chance “luck”
it will be good luck. The same can be true for not being prepared causing these opportunities to not go the best way they could for someone, hence, it being seen as bad luck. Some people, however may not agree with me, and say that luck is just that, luck. These people tend to believe that it doesn’t matter what you do to prepare in life, good and bad things happen and there is nothing you can do to prevent them. In conclusion I don’t see a right or wrong way of looking at the matter of luck and how it relates to being prepared for when the opportunity arises. To me this is something each person has to be ready to answer for themselves, they can either be prepared to answer it or not. I try to look, or like to believe I look for the good in every opportunity, so I would like to think that I have prepared myself for what I want out of life. The only issue with believing that you have prepared your self is that once the final outcome has been decided you have only one person to blame the outcome on and that person is you.
Attending an NA meeting during finals was one of my smarter decisions, as I procrastinate my work until the very last minute this week. However, in my opinion, going to a meeting was a good type of procrastination compared to other things I could be doing. Instead of going with the same friend this time, I asked a friend who was struggling with a ________ addiction. Not knowing that I was aware of his addiction, I asked him to join so I didn’t have to go alone; and he was more than happy to join me. I was very happy he agreed to join, because hopefully it helps him with his personal addiction, and he continues to return to the meetings.
The Meeting is a play written by Jeff Stetson that portrays the theoretical meeting of Malcom X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The play’s opening scene shows both men on opposite sides of the stage with spotlights on them. They take turns speaking to make it seem as if these interactions are happening at separate locations and at different points in time. We can assume they’re being interviewed because we hear a voice offstage asking the men questions. However, in these interviews, neither man is known by the public for accomplishing anything, almost as if the revolution they created had never happened. Directly following, Malcom wakes up from his nightmare, which is what the audience just witnessed. Based on
Many people say that their luck has brought them to where they are right now, but is that REALLY the case? Probably not. To be honest, they’re probably trying to be humble. Although luck takes a big part in success
LEADERSHIP BRIEFING PAPER Leadership Briefing Paper After spending your entire working life in one giant corporation that went down overnight; investing most of your retirement in stock options that plummet to zero; you are suddenly jobless and your retirement money is gone. Yet, perhaps even more threatening; our skilled and managerial jobs are steadily going abroad, due to poor corporate ethics. The crisis of poor ethics has jeopardized public trust, caused an erosion of organizational cultures, created human suffering, caused unemployment, and profit losses. Poor ethics
Luck is an important role in a person’s success. Home life, financial situation, location, and other elements are all a part of someone’s luck. If a person originates from a supportive, wealthy family, chances are that the person will grow up to become very successful. On the other hand, someone born into a careless, destitute family, will most likely struggle to find the path to success. In
The AA meeting I attended took place at a church. The church that holds the meeting has a beginner AA meeting that meets Monday nights at 7 pm. However, I decided to go to the regularly meeting which takes place an hour later at 8 pm. I felt as though I would get more out of the regular meetings and get a sense of what regular AA members talk about. Before arriving at the meeting, I was a little anxious because I felt like as though I would be out of place, and I would be intruding on the members who come to the meetings for support. Also before attending, for some unknown reason, I imagined the meeting would to be similar to AA meeting featured in movies. Contrary to what I thought, the meeting was completely different. When I arrived at

To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
I like to work hard for what I get in life. I don’t believe that what we get comes from luck or fate.

Throughout The Rocking-Horse Winner, there is a mention of luck. Luck among a person could be both good and bad. Whether you were born with it or not, it should never bring you down. In the text The Rocking-Horse Winner by Lawrence, the mother states, “it’s because your father has no luck.” (Prentice Hall Literature [page 148]). Unfortunately in my situation, I beg an intriguing observation among someone having no luck. Luck is simply not something you are born with, but it should be looked at as if something you must earn. If related to respect, luck can simply be many things among human values; however, no one is gifted with this whether you are lucky or unlucky. With that said, this was something that pondered my thoughts, but as I continued to read there was more and more that just didn’t quite seem right.
In the days of Jesus through the mid 1900’s, people had many different superstitions, or beliefs, about life. People believed if they were to do certain things, they would have good luck. Like Indians used to do a dance, called the “Indian rain dance”, when they wanted it to rain so it would help their crops or even their heritage. It was a dance people still believe in today, but those people don’t know that the reason they said it worked was because the Indians didn’t quit dancing until it rained. There are many superstitions in today’s time as well. I know that in the game of baseball many different players have different superstitions. Just like David Wells, when he used to pitch for the New York Yankees, believed if he listened to Metallica before every game he pitched he would have a good game. But regardless if David Wells listened to Metallica or not, he would still pitch the same if he didn’t listen to them. All I am saying is that Shirley Jackson, when she wrote The Lottery, in 1948, was trying to show everyone about the different superstitions, or beliefs, each culture, town, or village had and how bad they were. Even the kids in the village got ready for the lottery, it didn’t faze them, and all they knew was that it was just an event that happened every year. After all, villages, tribes, or cultures have many different traditions they all tend to put their full trust in.

Chances make people who they are. It is known that all people make mistakes, do things that are wrong by the outlook of society, and are left up to "second chances". This could be a blessing or a curse. Blessings for the people who use their chance for the better, and to advance from the loss, to make up for lost ground, and regain a grip on life. Some will grow mentally and go on to help others who are headed down the wrong path. It 's saving others from taking the loss, or from putting loss in others ' lives. One can never know what they have until it 's gone due to mistakes. From someone to convert one’s mind from the negative and turn it positive is a blessing and without a second chance there would never be the opportunity to shine.
