Success is dependent on both luck and factors people control. Although people are born into different circumstances, they are responsible for their own actions and decisions. In The Other Wes Moore, both Wes Moore and Wes Moore faced similar obstacles throughout their life, but they lived in two opposite households that affected their road to success. Luck is an important role in a person’s success. Home life, financial situation, location, and other elements are all a part of someone’s luck. If a person originates from a supportive, wealthy family, chances are that the person will grow up to become very successful. On the other hand, someone born into a careless, destitute family, will most likely struggle to find the path to success. In …show more content…
Work ethic, determination, morality, and other factors are all a part of what a person has control over. A person has the choice to be the best they can be. It is his or her responsibility to make the right decisions that will affect the rest of their life. A strong work ethic proves a person cares about their responsibility, as well as caring for themselves and their families. “When my grandparents moved to the United States their first priority was to save enough money to buy this house on Paulding Avenue… America allowed them to create a life they couldn’t have dreamed of in their home countries of Jamaica and Cuba (38, Source A).” The successful Wes faced some of the same obstacles that the other Wes also faced, but he realized his wrongful actions would hurt him in the future. The other Wes continued to return to bad behaviors, despite his attempt to escape that life at a Job Corps Center. He worked to earn his GED and eventually, learned the skills to become a carpenter that would allow him to earn money in a legal fashion. Sadly, he returned to dealing drugs and soon landed in prison for attempted murder in a jewelry store robbery. For this reason, it is important for a person to be aware of the consequences their decisions might have on their future, as well as their …show more content…
According to Paul Tough’s book How Children Succeed, non-cognitive skills are just as important to a child’s success as cognitive skills. Schools today focus intently on a child’s intelligence rather than their morality, which leads children to rebel against better choices (Source E). Through an experiment conducted by Angela Lee Duckworth, it was discovered that it was not social intelligence or their IQ that contributed to children’s success; it was grit (Source D). Children with grit are passionate and persevere each day. She learned that the grittier children were significantly more likely to graduate, even children with difficult home lives and poor standardized test scores. Although you cannot teach children grit, they are able to build it themselves through an idea called “growth mindset,” which is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, that it can change with your effort (Source D). With this in mind, a good work ethic and good morals are the most important characteristics a person can have to become successful in
family influences but other Wes was not successful. To the point Author Wes showed that how
Therefore, one of the two Wes Moores became a prisoner, convicted for robbery and murder. And the other one is Rhodes scholar and become a famous author. Even though they grew up in the same environment, but there is a big difference: the author Wes’s parents graduated from college and well educated, while the other Wes’s parents even didn’t finish school. So, according to the book, the most significant effect in the two Wes Moores lives is the education level of their parents.
Why have the two boys, with the same name and grew up fatherless in the similar poverty-stricken neighborhoods, developed into two dramatically different individuals: a Rhodes Scholar and a convicted inmate? While the book The Other Wes Moore goes to great length to answer the question profoundly, I also mull over just how and why the two Wes Moores have chosen their own paths to the opposed destines. According to the book, environment, family, education, others’ expectation, and opportunities are the primary factors contributing to the two Wes Moores’ failure and success. On the top of those factors, I find that the role models, the supports of their mothers, and the choices they made are surely worth
While reading the book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore many readers come to find out why Wes states, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” (Moore Introduction). What Wes is saying here is that both Wes Moore 's have a very similar life they shared the same name, they both lived in Baltimore with similar histories, yet they had two complete different lives. This is not to say that I agree with the statement, but rather disagree to an extent. I believe that even after being from the same town, having the same name, and both not having fathers at a young age Wes Moore had a more fortunate life that the other Wes Moore. This being because Wes didn’t have a father because
In “The Other Wes Moore”, by Wes Moore, the author takes the readers through his life growing up as well as the life of someone who was a stranger to him during his childhood but turned out to be a huge part of his life later on. His name was also Wes Moore and both he and the author grew up in poverty and did not have the best childhood. Although they grew up similarly, their adulthoods were the polar opposite. The author Wes Moore became the top in his class, a Rhodes scholar, and studied at Oxford University to later become very successful. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore is in prison for the rest of his life for a robbery and murder. How did these two grow up so similarly, yet had completely different adulthoods?
There are two types of people in this world. There are people like students who work diligently to achieve the highest grade possible, athletes who put in hours and hours of practice so they can make the starting team, young adults who climb the ladder to get to the top of their company, and many others doing whatever it takes to make their dreams and goals become a reality. There are also people in this world who do the bare minimum in order to graduate with a passing grade or to make a paycheck that is possible to live on. They are doing only “just enough” to make it another day. What is the difference between the two? Standardized tests, natural talent, and IQ rankings have been used in the past to determine how successful a person will be, but a new trait has come into play that ultimately determines how much a person achieves during their lifetime. Grit is the most important trait a person
Education, environment and family factors can determined a person’s future life is success or failure. The other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates talks about two people with a same name and the environments they grew up were similar. However, the decisions they made let they ended up with a different life. The author Wes Moore became a successful political, and the other Wes Moore became a criminal in the end. The reason is the author Wes Moore made a correct choice to enrich his future life. The other Wes failed his life because he made a wrong choice. Overall, the author Wes Moore was more successful than the other Wes Moore because of the supporting family, and strong education.
The story of two men growing up in the same neighborhood with similar backgrounds with the same name and eerily similar circumstances that leads and ultimately has each character ending up in very different places in life. Taking completely different paths to their futures is the setting of this story “The Other Wes Moore”. The way a person is shaped and guided in their developmental years does undoubtedly play a huge role in the type of person they will become in life. The author Wes does a good job of allowing you the ability to read this story and the circumstances surrounding the character his mother joy played such an important role in his success, while comparing the roll of Mary the other Wes’s mother. Both boys grew up with strong, hardworking black women in their lives and yet it still allowed for two completely different journeys. I think the lack of fathers and having not so good male role models was also a contributing factor.
Throughout the book, The Other Wes Moore we learned about the lives of two young kids who unexpectedly share the same name but like everyone else have totally different life’s. This book explores the concepts that deal with a person’s path in life and gives us an understanding of which factors are the ones that greatly influence the type of person we will become. I believe that the factors that have a bigger impact on our life paths are; the environment we live in, our family and friends.
Merriam Webster says grit is defined as unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. Angela Lee Duckworth’s opinion about grit being the key to success is true and correct. Her points about the kids that didn’t have the highest IQ but were the grittiest and were the most successful in the class showed that grit has to do with success. Another point that she makes is that talent doesn’t make you gritty. Just because someone has more talent than another person doesn’t mean that he or she is better. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. The final point that Angela makes is that growth mindset is a good way for building grit. Angela said that growth mindset is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, but can be changed with your effort.
“Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude.” (Michelle Obama). From this quote we should learn that your success is up to you. You determine how successful you are not anyone else. This means you need to work hard in order to have a successful life and be a successful person. You and only you determine your
Have you ever wondered how people became successful? You might think it just happens on it own. In “ Outliers” I want to convince you that those personal explanations of success don’t work. People don’t rise from nothing. In Contrast, this book masters to explain that we become successful by the opportunities that come around to us. The book also tells you how if your born on a certain month or even in what family you come from from can help you identify how you can achieve success.
impulses (the scene in the forest). That is why I would not attribute this character to the nature of allegory which always sharpens one abstract trait.
The book Outliers explores the concept of success and the social/ cultural constructs that shape and determine whether or not an individual is successful. Gladwell insists that success is not determined solely by a person’s abilities or innate intelligence. Instead, he argues, intelligence and basic skills are the stepping stones for being successful. The remaining factors are things like opportunity, culture, dedication, support, time, upbringing, and luck. Outliers spends a lot of time on the idea of luck or chance determining whether or not an individual will be successful. Gladwell uses the examples of Bill Gates, who would not have had the life he built without existing during the time he did, and the Beatles, who were given opportunities
"He was like a hunter stalking a bear, a whale, or maybe the sight of a single fleeing star the way he went after that ball (Malamud, 162)." Since he is young, Roy Hobbs has great ability and amazing talent in baseball. However, just like a tragic hero in Greek myth, those ones who fight for their honor, but fail because of their hubris or the desire of being such immortal and an aspects of not accepting the truth and reality, Roy Hobbs' hubris, ambition and a desire for fame and his fortune really tell that he is a tragic hero.
