After Roberta and Twyla, the story’s main characters, two young girls of contrasting races meet at a shelter and are separated by life’s ups and downs; they are later reunited, by fate, in various occasions, and are reminded of the differences of their skin by others as well as their own dissimilar ideals. Within the short story, Roberta’s and Twyla’s physical attributes shift back and forth, between black and white stereotypes, this constant change clouds the reader’s conception of the characters’ place in the world. Likewise, the plot reaches a climax when the women meet a third time at their children’s schools during integration. Twyla drives by and happens to see Roberta protesting on the integration of their children’s school. Twyla is confused as to why Roberta would be against this issue. “What are you doing? Picketing. What’s it look like…I wonder what made you think you were different. .. I swayed back and forth like a sideways yo-yo. Automatically I reached for Roberta…My arm shot out of the car window but no receiving hand was there.” (Recitatif 256-257). Not only did Twyla finally see the differences of perspectives but once she started getting attacked she was looking for Roberta’s help but she realized she was not there to help

When Twyla’s mother and Roberta’s mother meet, we see not only race influencing the characters but, how the parents can pass it down to the next generation. This takes place when the mothers come to the orphanage for chapel and Twyla describes to the reader Roberta’s mother being “bigger than any man and on her chest was the biggest cross I’d ever seen” (205).

Almost every character has experienced racism, whether it be towards them or they are the ones giving the racism in this novel. Racism is a very controversial topic as many have different perspectives on it.
Morrison uses the awkwardness of the two women’s meetings combined with the words spoken by the women to portray the confusion of race throughout the story. The first meeting was at Saint Bonaventure when they were roommates. Racism and sexism are both themes that are developed throughout the novel Sula, by Toni Morrison. The book is based around the black community of "The Bottom," which itself was established on a racist act. Later the characters in this town become racist as well. This internalized racism that develops may well be a survival tactic developed by the people over years, which still exists even at the end of the novel. The two main characters of this novel are Nel Wright and Sula Peace. They are both female characters and are often disadvantaged due to their gender. Nel and Sula are depicted as complete opposites that come together to almost complete one another through their once balanced friendship. Nel is shown to be a good character because she plays a socially acceptable role as a woman, submissive wife and mother, while Sula conforms to no social stereotypes and lets almost nothing hold her back, thus she is viewed as evil by the people in her community. Both women are judged by how well they fit into the preconceived social conventions and stereotypes that exist in "the Bottom."
Most of literature written by American minority authors is pedagogic, not toward the dominant culture, but for the minority cultures of which they are members. These authors realize that the dominant culture has misrepresented minority history, and it is the minority writers' burden to undertake the challenge of setting the record straight to strengthen and heal their own cultures. Unfortunately, many minorities are ambivalent because they vacillate between assimilation (thereby losing their separateness and cultural uniqueness) and segregation from the dominant culture. To decide whether to assimilate, it is essential for minorities to understand themselves as individuals and as a race. Mainstream United States history has dealt with the past of the dominant culture forgetting about equally important minority history. We cannot convey true American history without including and understanding minority cultures in the United States, but minority history has to first be written. National amnesia of minority history cannot be tolerated. Toni Morrison is a minority writer has risen to the challenge of preventing national amnesia through educating African-Americans by remembering their past and rewriting their history. In her trilogy, Beloved, Jazz and Paradise, and in her other works, Morrison has succeeded in creating literature for African-Americans that enables them to remember their history from slavery to the present.
