Our historical knowledge about antebellum (pre-war) America is very colored by our familiarity of the disasters that occurred in the era of American history prior to the Civil War. Americans understand and appreciate the seriousness of the sectional conflicts that divided the country between the slave-labor, industrializing North, agricultural South and the free labor (Foner,321) . Antebellum culture really mirrored the growing sectional crisis in America. At one time they were trying to pave over sectional crises and in other they tried to make the light of them. Even though southerners imprisoned black people, white Americans from both part of country embraced anti-black racism (Foner, 320). The problem of slavery caused tension between the North and the South. Abolitionists believed that slavery should be abolished right away. When it comes down to United States, in 21st century they are welcoming people from different countries, races, culture, religion, by hoping to find freedom and pursue ‘American dream’. America definitely became a nation of immigrants, and it has its own benefits. This is what symbolized the ideal American society, is to have an undeniable opportunity, to be free no matter what color or religion person is. This is not a case in the countries who have stricter laws on ‘freedom’. While in United States you do have regulations and laws that have to be respected, everyone has the same opportunity. Ideal American Society is the opportunity that has been given to everyone equally. It is not still ideal, but in the future will be.
