Good evening, my name is Michelle Boyd and I’m excited to be taking this course because it means I’m almost at the finish line. I’m looking forward to observing school counselors in their profession and interacting with the students. I’ll be doing my practicum at Brooke Point High School, located in Stafford Virginia. I enjoy helping others and believe my skills and abilities would be more beneficial at the secondary level.
I’m the mother of three daughters, my youngest child who’s still in high school insisted that I do my practicum and internship in a school district outside of our county. For the last fifteen years I’v worked in the social service field and I’m looking forward to changing careers.
Today I had the pleasure of meeting
I received the pleasure of interviewing two school counselors, Mrs. Jean Harmon and Mr. Devon Herrick. I was excited about interviewing school counselors within the Chicago land area. Despite many negativities spoken about the Chicago Public School (CPS) system, I desire to work within CPS. I’ve heard many pros and cons of working at a selective enrollment school, compared to a public charter school. By interviewing these two individuals, I assumed that I would get a snapshot of a potential work day for a school counselor. Mrs. Harmon is a school counselor at King College Preparatory high school. Mr. Herrick is a personal counselor at Urban Prep Charter Academy- Bronzeville campus. It was interesting in learning about the daily responsibilities,
Helping children and families through mentorship and guidance has been extremely fulfilling for me. Completing my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy will strengthen my ability to make a significant impact on people’s lives. I would especially like to provide services to rural areas where support may not be available or limited. Through a strong education, vast life experience and excellent training I will be better prepared to assist individuals and families achieve their highest
...l in an urban area. When working closely with students in the past, it was difficult knowing that I could provide extensive support but didn’t have the expertise. I 've explored different careers involving help children and their families but it always led back to social work. As a graduate student, I expect to be challenged as a student and a professional. I expect to learn all the different theories, practices and policies in place to properly help students. I look forward to the combination of coursework and practicums to enhance my skills. In retrospect, practicums can be the most challenging areas. To overcome this challenge, I’ve observed the school social worker at my current position and have developed a better understanding of the daily responsibilities. I am confident that I will succeed and to be able to help and advocate for students through social work.
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. My innovation to help disadvantaged children with social and emotional problems encompassed me to continue to pursue a career in the Social Service Profession. This will increase my chances of being a successful Child Therapist. I am aware, prepared and committed to devoting my time towards my studies at Fordham University as well as taking advantage of all the necessary resources that Fordham University has to offer. My personal, academic and profession experience has given me the opportunity
Over the next two years, I will work towards completing 3,000 hours of post licensure internship while continuing my education in a doctoral program. After completing the doctoral program, I would like to hold dual licensure as a professional counselor and psychologist. In the next 10 years, I would like to work at the collegiate level as an educator in psychology and/or counseling. My ultimate career goal is to operate a program for at risk men and women ages 18 to 25. The program I hope to create will focus on the transition to independence process (TIP) model. My focus will be to provide psychological services for young people who are aging out of foster care, have a juvenile record, or are teen parents. The process of entering adulthood is often difficult, especially for those who struggled through their adolescent years like my
Narrative research is a qualitative methodological approach in research (Bedford & Landry, 2010. Since the early 1980s, narrative inquiry has been emerging in regards to individual life stories. Storytelling is closely related to psychoanalytic tradition. Narrative research, consist of a multiple of approaches, that are apart of social constructionism, which is guided by the philosophical assumptions of an interpretive constructivist paradigm (Patsiopoulos & Buchanan, 2011). Through this qualitative method researchers are able to explore and obtain an understanding about individuals through specific data gathered through interviews.
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. It is that same desire to empower our future students that has steered me towards a career as a school counselor. By enrolling in the Masters in counseling program, I aspire to develop methods and experience to become an effective, experienced, and adaptable school counselor that promotes self-awareness, allowing students to realize their full potential and impetus them towards a promising future. I want to learn skills that facilitate personal and career development, ensuring that our students grow accomplishing their goals and ambitions.
Prior to working in my field, it seemed that I waited a very long time to be in the position I wanted to be in. When I first started working in my field I was very excited. Working as a Community support Worker, I often thought to myself that my current position would be the closest I would get to a social worker position. I was ecstatic about my achievements until I realized that I still was unsatisfied and I wanted more. When I realized my current career as a community support worker, was not enough for me I decided to advance in my field. I made the conscious decision to return back to school for my masters and obtain a master’s degree in mental health counseling. This process has been extremely rewarding and challenging. Although, I have been doing a wonderful job with my schooling, it has been very difficult to balance work, school, and family. While attending graduate school, I have been able to successfully complete my coursework and maintain quality grades however I have not been able to spend much time with my family as I would like. This transition has been extremely challenging, however it has taught me exceptional time management skills. It also has taught me how to deal with change. I am now open to change because I believe it is necessary for
I look forward to attending graduate school for school counseling. Attending the University of North Carolina will allow me the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to aid students facing a variety of difficult situations. I am ready to take the next step in my career as a school counselor.

My freshman seminar class hitherto has been good. In this class I have been learning about various topics. These topics fall into helping us for high school and preparing us for the future. These topics was important and necessary because they helped us to avoid from not being successful. One of the topics we have recently accomplished was budgeting.
When I first started leaning to read words I was very enthusiastic and I was so proud of my self, I was a reader now but was I reading or just lifting words from the white paper full of dreams and hopes. I still remember the days sitting with my mom on the dining room table reading together. Reading with my mom from early days I realise that language is very much like a living organism. It cannot be put together from parts like a machine, and it is constantly fluctuating and evolving. Language is a living organism that grows, it exists only in interaction with others, in a social interdependence. Different cultures
Narrative Therapy was developed to help people separate themselves from their problems. The idea is that this will help the person use the skills that they already possess to minimize the problems that exist in their everyday lives. The Narrative Therapy approach was developed by Social Workers Michael White (Australia) and David Epston (New Zealand) during the 1970s-1980s. “White proclaimed is work to be exclusively that of ‘rich story development’ “(Gallant).
At the beginning of the semester it had been over six years since I had been in an English class, So naturally filled with panic and discomfort with the subject I began the class with low personal expectations. However putting forth my best effort I attempted to take everything presented to me in stride. Things that were problems to begin with were Grammar, Sounding arrogant, according to a pretest, and staying on the subject during a paper. Things that sparked my interest are peer reviews and using the meal plan. With those things being said I’d like to go into further detail about how I’ve felt about my time spent and performance.
Over the last few years there have been many controversies over the invasion of privacy of individuals online. Many are not aware of how easily the government can obtain access to their personal information through their devices when they use the internet or simply use phones, as well as what type of protection is offered to them. People go through their daily lives without realizing the risk they may face and that their personal information can be in the hands of others without consent being granted. However the effects of online surveillance are quite more complex than what we’d expect them to be. Many are not aware of what the consequences of such behavior done by organizations like the NSA are. The surveillance actions that take place by the government are unethical because they invade the privacy of individuals by accessing and retaining personal information without their consent. Furthermore, they try to access this information
