During my time at Quarles Elementary School, I have been taking a lot of notes and pictures to use and adapt to use in my future classroom. Dianna Miller’s Power Up classroom was set up with five tables and the computer desk. The five tables were used as individual reading space for the students and the mentors to sit and have room to have everything needed within reach. The part that impressed me was Ms. Miller’s time management skills as well as how orderly the students rotated from reading table to computer desk to do their AR tests. Her calm demeanor and even tone of voice while dealing with the students during their rowdiest moments was very inspiring. The manner in which the books are organized around the room with color-coded bins to …show more content…
There were laminated reading cards as well alongside the book bins. The cards had short stories and questions on them for use when the students had read their book and finished their test. I hope that whatever school I have the privilege to teach at will have a similar program in use for the students because this is well worth the time and expense to keep it running.
I have enjoyed my time at Quarles Elementary School very much. Ms. Miller is such a wonderful person and teacher. She made me feel welcome and even more than that she made me see that I and every other volunteer were needed by the students. Upon arriving at the Power Up room, I was immediately thrust into helping the students with their AR reading and testing. The first student I was asked to help was a second grader that loved reading and whizzed right through her book and test without any assistance from me. She was more than happy to grab a second book and read it to me as well. There were several more students that came to me but required no more than someone to cheer them on as they read their books and score a 100% on their tests. However, there were a couple of students that proved the point of the program. Ms. Miller brought a young man
...s just proves the point that students are people too. They may be inexperienced, but they are gaining knowledge and awareness about the world around them and becoming brave enough to speak up for themselves.
"A Book A Week: Classroom Insturction." Curry School of Education. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Feb. 2014.
On Tuesday, we all shared titles of our favorite books and some kindergartners also brought their favorite books to share and showed us their favorite page from those books and explained why it was their favorite page. Children learned about the sight words during this session. They decorated their Literacy bags, which they will start bringing to home from next week to practice and share the things they have learned during Literacy classes.
The teacher, presentation, and overall enthusiasm helped as well because without it all of the students motivation would have fallen off.
On my first day my supervisor Chris Mildner took me around the building and introduced me to all of the employees at the foundation. Each employee introduced themselves and explained to me about their particular job position. Everyone at the foundation was very friendly and made me feel very welcome at my new job. Chris then explained about the work the foundation does for Clark College and its students. By learning about each employees contributions to the organization and the goals that they were trying to accomplish helped me to better understand the significance of the work that I would be performing.
I enjoyed the service learning project because of the friendship I had made with Val. Each visit I would knock on her door, and she would yell “come in” with and excided. She always looked happy to see me, and would always pull me close to kiss my cheek before I left. I did however find it difficult to complete twenty five hours. Being a full time student, a mom of three young children, and working part time, finding the time to spend with Val was not easy.
I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at the elementary school. It opened my eyes to a few of the problems in our communities. I was able to make others aware of those problems through volunteering and being proactive. I am going to continue with the program for as long as I am able to do so. If only we had millions of these programs across the globe, many other children would be able to benefit and develop the skills to succeed educationally.
She initiates conversations with students by asking open ended questions about how their school week has been so far, what are some of the exciting things that have been going
The class I visited is comprised of 24 five and six year old children, a lead teacher and a ‘Para-Pro” who assists the teacher and provides support and guidance for the children. Within the classroom itself, there are 6 tables organized in the center of the room in a grid formation. Children have their own workspace at a shared table. Around the perimeter of the room are ‘centers’ where each day, the children work on tasks such as listening, story development, gross and fine motor skills, math, reading and other important skills that are needed to develop socially and academically. In several places on the walls, there are displays or ‘brag boards’ where children can post their work that they feel best represents their efforts. The walls are brightly decorated and are filled with pictures, letters, numbers and other basic elementary school information. It is energizing and interesting without being chaotic or overstimulating.
The next been has report card labels and papers in a binder the kids are suppose to be tested on. The next bin has the basic white computer paper. After that is the bin with zip lock bags, and then in the last bin is the children's earphones in ziplock bags. Above the three computers is a bulletin board that has the classes picture in the middle and different
The readbox is a play off of “Redbox” and is a creative way to display books, create interest, and support reading choice (Tyson, 2013). Students are able to rent out various books using a punch card. I can show “book trailers” or have students create them to advertise the hot new books. Students are motivated and excited to read fresh new books that are spotlighted. -Model appropriate behavior and break down rules -Give praise and provide specific positive feedback to reinforce behaviors you want to repeat -Practice self-control, listening, taking turns when speaking without interruptions, appropriate responses, and eye contract (tracking)
Sharing our experiences through class discussions relating to a text taught us empathy. Everyone became friends and we learned how to make friends, not enemies, through learning because of her expertise with facilitating young teenagers in a healthy social
Emotionally the experience was enlightening and frustrating. I came across several people who were willing to drop what they were doing in order to help me get to where I needed to be. More than half of the people who offered to help me were complete strangers, which was truly refreshing to see. Wherever I was whether it was the dining hall, sidewalks, the dorm, or class someone always offered their assistants. It was tempting at times to accept their help even if I did not need it, however I decided it was best to go throug...
books. Workbooks and notebooks regularly, They must keep the class clean and organized all times.
My classroom management starts with a well-organized, clearly labeled classroom layout so that my students can easily access the resources they need for my class. I display visual aids and reminders around the room to support the students and I display their work in specific places around the room to give them a sense of belonging. I create routines and procedures to support the students and enable them to form smooth transitions between activities. There is a certain way they enter and leave the classroom, distribute books and papers, and move their desks and chairs. In my classroom these mundane tasks are completed quickly, competitively, and with enthusiasm. Having routines in place helps students understand exactly what is expected of them and gives them confidence in their actions.
