There are many different health care systems around the world; however, not all the health care systems provide for those who live in poverty. An effective healthcare system provides a high-quality and affordable health services, as well as better access and faster treatments. The primary goal for health services is to provide immediate treatments and better results, that’s why it is quite challenging to provide care for all the population, if the health care system fails to provide the needs for all the citizens. Mexico’s official name is “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” or United Mexican States, and is made up of 31 states. Mexico is filled with wealthy individuals, as well as, extreme poverty. However, most of the population suffers poverty, due to political and economic failure in the country. The country is known to have, “a dynamic industrial base, vast mineral resources, a wide-ranging service sector, and the world’s largest population of Spanish speakers – about two and a half times that of Spain or Colombia,” (Palerm 2017). Mexico City, is Mexico’s most populous capital, and provides a major source of social and economic boost for the country. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, about four-fifths of the Mexican population live in urban areas, since migrants from other countries, have populated in Mexico’s cities. The article also states that, “Mexico has experienced a series of economic booms leading to periods of impressive social gains, followed by busts, with significant declines in living standards for the middle and lower classes. The country remains economically fragile despite the forging of stronger ties with the United States and Canada through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),” (Palerm …show more content…

According to the article “Income-related inequalities and inequities in health and health care utilization in Mexico,” the Mexican health care system is composed of three segments: “social security institutions that provide access to medical care to affiliates and their families; care provided by the Ministry of Health to the population without access to social security, including Seguro Popular (SP), a voluntary public health insurance scheme; and private health services catering to the general population and mostly financed through out-of-pocket payments,” (Barraza-Lloréns 2013). For Mexico, it was very important to try to achieve a universal health coverage, which is the program known as, the World Health Organization, or WHO. This program’s main goal is to provide high-quality and affordable medical services for all the population. Mexico’s attempt to provide a universal health system began with the creation of the Social Protection System in Health, or SPSS, in 2004.
