Poverty Causes Crime

1004 Words3 Pages

I argue that poverty is the main cause of the increasing crimes in the society. It is quite evident that the aspect of crime and poverty normally go hand in hand. It is not possible to deal with crime without having to deal with some of the root causes which mostly are the aspects of poverty. Poverty can be basically referred to as the condition of choice and in most cases is the burden of the people that lack the benefits that the majority people have (Short, 1997). Normally, it is possible to hide wealth but it is never possible to hide a condition of poverty. There are two arguments regarding whether poverty is the aspect responsible for crime and whether crime can cause poverty. The families that go without the basic necessities in most cases could resort to theft. Therefore, I strongly hold that even though crime could have many causes, poverty is the largest of its causes.
Discussion
From the statistics, one of the largest problems that are currently facing the contemporary society has been the increasing rates of crimes. It has been established that the high levels of crimes in any state normally will rob individuals the peace as well as the tranquility and it also raises concern regarding the safety and security of individuals generally. The obvious end result is normally the fact that it might have a psychological effect to the victimized and the non-victimized and in turn will deprive individuals of their property and to some extent can deprive lives. Even though crime is classified to be conducted for several reasons, statistics have confirmed that the impoverished are the ones that commit it at higher rate (Silberman, 1978). Normally, if a part of society will not be able to cater to the basic needs like housing...

Conclusion
To sum it up, I still hold that the increasing crimes in the society have been due to the conditions of poverty in various parts of the country. From the statistics, it is evident that it is in the poor neighborhoods that many types of crimes are realized to have occurred in large numbers. Poverty is mainly as a result of many factors and all these have to find a way for survival through committing crimes (Crowther & Campling, 2000). Therefore, some of the factors that can aid in reducing crime would be to advocate for better education in order to do away with ignorance in individuals.
