I diagnosed Paul Manning with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because it best describes Paul’s experiences. I decided to give him this diagnosis because he is experiencing psychological distress following exposure to a traumatic or stressful event. Paul directly experienced a traumatic event by joining the Third Infantry Division in Afghanistan. When in Afghanistan, Paul’s squad was hit by mortar fire from Taliban insurgents. According to reports, Paul was wounded in the upper thigh and had been the only member of his squad to survive the attack. Paul is also experiencing the following symptoms that apply to PTSD: He has recurrent, involuntary, and intrusive distressing memories of the traumatic event. Paul avoids seeing people that remind him of the event and when he does see them he gets angry and wants them out of his sight to avoid distressing memories. Paul is also not able to remember several hours of the attack. He is experiencing panic attacks due to the trauma that he had to endure. Paul’s PTSD has affected his relationships and has lead him to obtain the other diagnosis. To cope with the memories and flashbacks Paul was drinking heavily and smoking weed regularly. It was for this reason that I decided to give him the AUD severe disorder and the Cannabis Use severe disorder. Because Paul has been clean for six months I gave him the early remission specifier.
