Antwone Fisher presents characteristics consistent with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 271). The American Psychiatric Association described the characteristics of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, as “the development of characteristic symptoms following exposure to one or more traumatic events” (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 271). The American Psychological Association (2013) outlines the criterion for diagnosis outlined in eight diagnostic criterion sublevels (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, pp. 271-272). Criterion A is measured by “exposure to actual or threatened” serious trauma or injury based upon one or more factors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. …show more content…
272). Criterion D is identified by two or more of the following: inability to recall significant details of the traumatic event(s), persistent and inflated negative beliefs or presumptions about self, others, or the world (p. 272), constant “distorted” beliefs about the cause or affects of the traumatic events that enable an individual to blame himself/herself or others (p. 272), typical emotional state is negative, lack of interest or participation in significant activities, perpetual difficulty experiencing positive emotions, and feelings of “detachment” from self or others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 272). Antwone’s signs and behaviors are consistent with four of the seven criteria. Antwone refers to himself as a person with problems who is “broken” inside (Black, Washington, 2002). Antwone also reports that he fights because “that’s the only way people will get it” (Black, Washington, 2002). Antwone is often found reading, drawing, or listening to music alone, yet expresses his desire for his closeness to his therapist (Black, Washington, …show more content…
273), if individual’s disturbances cause clinically significant impairment social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning (Criterion G, p. 273), and if the disturbance(s) are not better explained by substance abuse or another medical condition (Criterion H, p. 273) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 273). Antwone meet’s the criteria for all three, as he recognizes he has always exhibited these behaviors since he left the Tate’s (Black, Washington, 2002). Antwone’s behavior has sent him to the brig several times, caused him to be demoted several times, and hinders his ability to get close with others (Black, Washington, 2002). Lastly, Antwone later reports to his birth mother that he has never done any drugs or alcohol in his lifetime (Black, Washington, 2002). Antwone’s psychological and environmental stressors caused him to develop PTSD. This character is an example of how and individual’s resilience and hardness can act as a protective factor in later growth (Bonanno, 2004, p.
When considering the 5 D’s of abnormality, he possesses characteristics of them all. For dysfunction, he experiences social dysfunction by being unable to create and maintain relationships. He also experiences emotional dysfunction by having a fear of being alone, bouts of crying, and feelings of low self-worth. Physiological symptoms such as insomnia,
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition, similar to an anxiety disorder, that is triggered by trauma and other extremely stressful circumstances. Throughout the book, Junger talks about PTSD in a wide range:from PTSD rates in natural disaster victims to PTSD rates in veterans. The latter is explained on a deeper perspective. While Junger gave many examples of why PTSD rates in America were so high, the most captivating was:
Within this definition are the three D’s. The three D’s are distress, dysfunction, and deviant. Distress is symptoms or experiences that are troubling, confusing, or out of the ordinary to ones self or others. While Ben, the filmmaker and Sam are filming the documentary on street basketball; Sam had his first manic episode. He became very elevated as a whole. Selkow talked about how Sam would call and leave multiple messages all throughout the night. This showed that Sam wasn’t getting the sleep he needed. A troubling symptom Sam had was when he had thoughts of suicide. This was brought on when Sam was at his depressed stage in his disorder. Towards the end of the documentary, he admits to Ben that he did have thoughts of suicide and at one of those times he almost went through with it. Sam’s dad committed suicide after struggling with bipolar disorder. Sam didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of his father, which may have given him the upper hand when having to deal with those thoughts. If Sam didn’t have this psychological disorder he wouldn’t have these troubling or confusing symptoms. Dysfunction is the inability to function as expected in social and occupational activities. When Sam was in his depressed state, he found it hard to hold a job. He would lose interest and was also fatigue. In Sam’s manic state,
When I decided to watch “The Antwone Fisher Story” I wasn’t really sure what I was about to watch. I had never heard about the movie before, but I am up for watching any movie that comes my way. It had a great story about Antwone Fisher’s struggles through life and how it has affected him in present time. How can I use what I have seen in this movie in my future classroom?

The investigators sought out potential subjects through referrals from psychiatric hospitals, counseling centers, and psychotherapists. All potential subjects were screened with a scripted interview and if they met all the inclusion criteria they met with an investigator who administered the Clinical-Administered PTSD Scale(CAPS) to provide an accurate diagnosis. In the end the study ended up with 12 subject, 10 females and 2 males with a mean age of 41.4, that met the criteria for PTSD with treatment resistant symptoms, which were shown with a CAPS score of greater than or equal to 50.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), originally associated with combat, has always been around in some shape or form but it was not until 1980 that it was named Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and became an accredited diagnosis (Rothschild). The fact is PTSD is one of many names for an old problem; that war has always had a severe psychological impact on people in immediate and lasting ways. PTSD has a history that is as long and significant as the world’s war history - thousands of years. Although, the diagnosis has not been around for that long, different names and symptoms of PTSD always have been. Some physical symptoms include increased blood pressure, excessive heart rate, rapid breathing, muscle tension, nausea, diarrhea, problems with vision, speech, walking disorders, convulsive vomiting, cardiac palpitations, twitching or spasms, weakness and severe muscular cramps. The individual may also suffer from psychological symptoms, such as violent nightmares, flashbacks, melancholy, disturbed sleep or insomnia, loss of appetite, and anxieties when certain things remind them such as the anniversary date of the event (Peterson, 2009).
Antwone Fisher was an individual that endured so many things. He faced a lot of challenges that may have seemed impossible to recover from. This story was an example of the many things that some children may experience. Antwone was not raised in an upper crust home. He did not grow up in a home in which his mother and father was present. Instead of having positive role models, he had to live with individuals that were abusive to him. When observing Antwone’s personality, one may refer to two different theorists such as Bandura and Rogers.
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is defined by our book, Abnormal Psychology, as “an extreme response to a severe stressor, including increased anxiety, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma, and symptoms of increased arousal.” In the diagnosis of PTSD, a person must have experienced an serious trauma; including “actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violation.” In the DSM-5, symptoms for PTSD are grouped in four categories. First being intrusively reexperiencing the traumatic event. The person may have recurring memories of the event and may be intensely upset by reminders of the event. Secondly, avoidance of stimuli associated with the event, either internally or externally. Third, signs of mood and cognitive change after the trauma. This includes blaming the self or others for the event and feeling detached from others. The last category is symptoms of increased arousal and reactivity. The person may experience self-destructive behavior and sleep disturbance. The person must have 1 symptom from the first category, 1 from the second, at least 2 from the third, and at least 2 from the fourth. The symptoms began or worsened after the trauma(s) and continued for at least one
In the short story, The Shivering Tree, by John McLeod, past experiences are shown to have a profound effect on the development of an individual. Nanabush learns from his past mistakes which results in the growth of his maturity. In the story, Nanabush past experiences give him the ability to learn from his previous mistakes by turning his enemies into supporting allies, which assists him in resolving his conflict with the Juggler at the end. First, Nanabush act of making peace with Owl demonstrates his maturity, which puts in the right direction for success. Secondly, the growth of his maturity is displayed with Nanabush's final confrontation with the Juggler and permanently abandons him.
... growth where a child is forced to start looking for solutions for everything that is wrong instead of simply being a child. This analysis prove that children have their own way of seeing things and interpreting them. Their defense mechanisms allow them to live through hard and difficult times by creating jokes and games out of the real situation. This enables then to escape the difficulties of the real world.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness that develops after exposure to an event that is perceived to be life threatening or pose serious bodily injury to self or others (Sherin & Nemeroff, 2011). According
The story introduces our main characters Lane A. Dean Jr. and his girlfriend Sheri Fisher. The couple are set to be sitting up on a picnic table at the park by the edge of the lake, with part of the downed tree in the shallows half hidden by the bank. The aura between the two seems to be quiet and eerie. The mood set by the downed tree made it seem to be depressing and dark as well. They sat on the table for quite a while without a word, both sitting frozen and uncomfortable.
CJ Pearson continually harassed Alex Billings this year and caused him to transfer. When Alex was planning to transfer over to St. Joseph Academy he received a psychological evaluation from a trained professional. The PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) test came positive with moderate to severe symptom rating. (47) What this means is that C.J Pearson had the audacity harassed Alex Billings to a point where he developed a severe mental health condition.
