I chose to provide instructions on how to care for post-operative knee replacement patients on day of surgery. My audience is going to be the nurses that come work on my home unit, the ortho/trauma unit. I am one of the five nurses on our unit to care for these patients but due to increased number of people getting knee replacements in our hospital, other nurses such as float nurses, are having to take care of these patients. Therefore, I chose this subject because I can apply it to my place of work. Regarding my design, some of the decisions I made were to use a standard font, a combined grid, and a small amount of white space. Basic Design Principles • As far as alignment used, I chose columns to make it easier for reader to scan through …show more content…
instructions • I used repetition by numbering the instructions and applying bullets • The red stop signs and red lettering is an example of contrast because it makes the wording stand out. The columns also stand out from the rest of the text. • I used proximity on number one and number eight on the instructions by grouping the equipment and orders into bullet points to make text more visually digestible.
Consistency I used Georgia size 12 font for all the text except for the heading, which is larger, and the references, which are much smaller, so the document would not appear scattered. Using standard margins, indentation, and unjustified text throughout simply looked cleaner. I further showed consistency by using horizontal columns at the beginning and at end, but was it not dull due to the two columns in the middle. White space is used around the drain illustrations in order to make pictures stand out. Navigation and Emphasis I used larger, bold numbers for the instructions (main part) and bullets to break down the larger sections. I chose to use red and black bullets to differentiate the instruction and the end sections. Bold is used for the title and the two headings at the end, but they also made the end look cleaner when applied to the different clinicians. I used different shades of blue on the heading of drain pictures to allow for both similarity and contrast. This makes it easier for reader to navigate through text. Italics are used for emphasis where there may be confusion. In our unit we have been having the issue of nurses applying and leaving patients with knee high TEDs instead of thigh high TEDs as ordered, so I used italics to emphasize the
importance. Illustrations By providing the foot pump illustration, I was able to cut down on a few words which would describe the exercises. I chose the foot pump illustration because of its importance and because the description might cause confusion. The Hemovac illustrations emphasizes that there will be orders for both compressed and to gravity. My design decisions make my instructions more helpful to my co-workers by making it easy to scan through and easy to review. In order to cut down on words, simplified illustrations are presented making it effortless to teach the patient. A few minutes of reading will make the nurse more comfortable in caring for these patients.
As a nurse, it is important to address the needs of a patient during care. These needs are unique to each individual and personalizing it, enable the patients to feel truly cared about. It is important to be educated about these needs as the patients and their families look to you as a guide; therefore, education on things w...

Total knee replacement is also referred as total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This is a surgery used in the treatment of severe osteoarthritis. The surgery involves the replacement of the damaged part of the knee joint with an artificial joint (also called prosthesis). The initial treatment of osteoarthritis involves weight loss, knee braces, physical therapy and medications. However surgery is recommended when the symptoms of osteoarthritis such as pain and stiffness is not controlled with medications.
Some of the patients had children, which really broke my heart because I have kids and I couldn’t imagine being away from them for any period of time. In relation to the lecture content covered in this week’s lectures, I felt they related to clinical when describing the layout and description of the milieu. For example, I was able to see how the doors were securely locked, and the nursing station was behind an encasement called a bubble. In addition, we discussed the different type of therapies that were conducted on the floor.

On a daily basis, I will have to engage in charting and documentation writing to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Charting will involve patient identification, legal forms, observation, and progress notes. Documentation must be factual with objective information about the patients’ behaviors. Accuracy and conciseness are crucial characteristics of documentation in the nursing profession so that other medical professionals can quickly read over the information (Sacramento State,

I will make patient safety a top priority so that I can continue to care for them and help them on their road to recovery. As a nurse I will practice safe, competent care. I will make informed decisions and participate in proper management of patient records. I will also use integrity, collaboration, innovation and giving with my patients and as I continue to build my foundation of pediatric nursing in this residency. I will continue to work on the values of Cook Children’s daily. This residency will mark the beginning of a nursing profession in a field of study that I am incredibly passionate about. My passion for nursing and for pediatrics will show through my actions and interactions with my fellow coworkers, patients, and their families.
In this essay, I will discuss three clinical skills that I undertook during the six weeks placement: Giving an insulin injection, hand washing and dressing a trauma wound.

The goal of my learning plan is to promote health maintenance and restoration for hip or knee replacement surgery patients by providing patient education sessions and information pamphlets on post-operative pain and swelling management between the periods of week 8 to week 10. During the implementation process of my learning plan I used the Community Health Nurses association’s standard as a guide to help me advance with the production and presentation. I focused my learning plan on the standard of health maintenance, restoration, and palliation under the category of promoting health. This standard can be defined as “providing clinical nursing, palliative care, health teaching and/or counseling to individuals and families as they experience illness and life crisis…” (Peter, Sweatman, & Carlin, 2012, p. 66) I am doing a teaching session and pamphlet for my learning plan which is included in the area of health teaching. Peter et al also described the possible outcomes of this process which is to encourage participation of patient and family members to engage in the development of their care plan by maximizing their capacity to take responsibility for and manage their own care. (Peter et al, 2012, p. 66) I hope the implementation of my learning plan can educate the patients so they can understand more about their health and gain knowledge on types of interventions they can use at home to enhance their recovery. For example, if the patient feels pain and swelling at home, they will be able to have the knowledge that they can use ice to help reduce the pain and swelling. I followed the CNO’s ethics practice standard. This standard stated about respecting client’s choice and ensuring privacy and confidentiality during the caring process...
Although I based my plan for this week’s clinical day on past experience, I cannot be positive of what tomorrow will encompass, as I have never been on the first floor. Based on what classmates declared, I will begin my clinical day by being paired up with a nurse on the first floor and begin to take vital signs for her patient. The vitals signs I take will influence the nurse’s actions, whether that is to give medications, hold a medication, or implement care. With vitals signs complete, I will finish the morning hours by shadowing my assigned nurse throughout the morning, assisting in patient care where it is permitted – wound care, glucose checking, feeding tubes/lines, and IV pumps. Around 11 o 'clock, our group normally gathers together and takes a lunch break for a half hour. After the group lunch break, I would like to get with my partner and begin to fill out our concept worksheet - Collaboration - for this week. My partner and I will describe the collaborative efforts that we have experienced in the facility, discern which health care disciplines interact with our assigned resident, and identity collaboration between health care team members of the facility. When we complete out concept worksheet, I would like to gather this week 's required information from our assigned partner and her medical record –
The text layout in regards to style deals with font, size and contrast. The font makes the text. You are able to change the font to show importance or the use quotes. An example would be "bolding" an example. A normal font such as Times Roman can be used to for the body. However, a font such as Arial Black allows the text to stand out. Changes in size also have the same effect. These adjustments in the format of the text also creates a contrast in the writing. This allows the reader to easily identify the important points. I feel Strunk and White choose a design that is easy to read and sticks directly to the point. The reader is able to locate the issue and find the solution and an example to problem. The style issue is listed by number and bolded to stand out. An example of the same correct style issue is given in different versions. This allows the reader to apply such style to their own writings. These different topics are stated in bold to be easily read. The guide gives the reader good examples to assist in their writings. This is important because the reader is searching for something particular and seeking a particular resolution. Providing an easy to read guide is extremely helpful. A guide that is easy to navigate decreases the stress often associated with writing. The ability to find things easy is always helpful.
