Each of has protective factors that help us when we are put in situations or face challenges that require us to look within ourselves to move forward. Each of us faces challenges, however it is during these challenges that we need to step back and use our wise mind rather than our emotional mind to be able to problem solve with the ability to decide how we are going to move forward. It may be that we need to ask for help, seek assistance and guidance or rely on ourselves. By completing the reading and exercises within this book I was reminded of what my strengths are and the positive protective factors that I rely on. Many of the exercises were designed for us take a personal inventory of ourselves and to highlight our protective factors and strengths. We are smarter, intuitive and have the ability to be perspective if we are able to listen and trust ourselves. My results for caring and support indicated that I am not always nurturing to myself (self-care) I recognize this and continue to work on taking the time to step away from the many commitments I have to do something for myself. While assessing my high expectations I once again realize that I do not give myself enough positive messages about accomplishing my goals and overcoming adversity. With my schedule as impacted as it is I do not volunteer to help others or belong to a group in my community, opportunity for meaningful participation. The category pro-social bonds did make me realize how much I have forgone in order to homework, classes, work etc. as I am not involved in positive hobbies or activities nor do I participate in any type of groups. Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
Most people do not actively seek out adversity, yet few can escape encountering adversity in the form of hardships and afflictions. Two people who faced great adversity in their lives were Martin Luther King Jr. and my father Brent Vickery. These men both faced adversity in different degrees and at different times and places within the United States, but what makes them similar is that their strength of character allowed them to face adversity boldly.

Imagine a man who was recently laid off from his job at an oil and gas company and can no longer financially support his family. The decision this man makes to either push through this adversity to find a new job or let his life go in a downwards spiral will be determined by if the man is resilient or not. According to the Oxford English Dictionary the word resiliency means, “capacity to recover from misfortune, shock or illness.” However I believe the definition for the word resiliency goes much deeper than what the dictionary says. Furthermore, recovery is unique and individualised to each person so it is difficult to define. However, throughout literature, a number of common themes emerge namely; hope, personal empowerment, individualized, person-centred care, engagement between the person, organization and others as well as dignity and humanity.
Throughout life many people face difficulties. Depending on the person’s strength some will get through tough times, but some will fail to overcome them. Two books where characters have to face many challenges include: Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Book Thief. These two stories deal with people overcoming the difficulties faced throughout everyday life. Some difficulties include racism, religious discrimination, and dealing with others’ cruelness or kindness. These experiences can influence and increase one's ability to recover from difficult situations. They may provide valuable lessons, strengthen one’s inner endurance, and help in creating better coping mechanisms. Like a muscle, resilience gets stronger as a person overcomes more and harder obstacles in life. Therefore, despite the fact that going through difficult situations is challenging, it can ultimately strengthen their resilience.
In conclusion, we learn in life we have to face these challenges in each accomplishment to give us a sense of unity through our family members. In life, we have to go through these challenges everyday and some days it will be easy and some days it will not but as long as we have our friends, family and friends to point us to the right direction we can achieve basically anything we want too. As we reviewed the self awareness module this past week it was very interesting to see how the self assessments provided the class information about their own personal human behaviors. I was aware of most of the information provided but there were some tendencies I was surprised to find fitted my character. It was good to be reminded of the things I had forgotten about myself. Learning about my individuality and how I interact and respond to others based on my traits, personality and behavior has been an awakening experience. It is also great to know that I can work on areas that need improvement to become a more balance person to better assist my subordinates, teams and organizations.
People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
From my understanding, I have come to view resilience as the art of not dwelling. This personal definition, I recognize, only summarizes half of the word’s meaning, not even touching on the action of recovery. I chose to view it in this way because, I find it helps me to find it manageable. I often struggle with experiencing difficulties or changes, I often find myself internalizing my problems which leads me to introspection and self doubt. By concentrating on a single facet I am able to better manage resilience. Despite my choice to ignore the second half on the word’s meaning, by choosing not to dwell, I have found recovery becomes easier to achieve. As a person who prefers math and science, problem solving from an analytical perspective is an enjoyable task, but when emotions are involved the process gets derailed or takes longer. I have found that using my strategy of not dwelling I am able to analytically look at my situation and consider my next steps to
