Many students tend to dread attending classes. As a result, the attitude of students is at times very relaxed when completing assignments. Teachers can assess whether students complete assignments through a variety of ways. But the most effective way is by assigning a pop quiz. Pop quizzes are most effective for a variety of reasons. For one, it is a fair assessment. Every student is instructed to study and acquire an understanding of all the material. A student that takes advantage of his or her time will often succeed on the quiz. However, those that spend less time will most likely fail. Because most teachers assign tests two weeks after the material is give, students will never quite know if they truly have grasped the information. So, by giving pop quizzes, students can gage where he or she is at in terms of understanding the material. If he or she does well, then the student can focus on the weaker areas. And if a student did poorly on the quiz, then they know that more time should be spent towards learning the information. By having a quiz, a student can correct his or her mistakes now before they fail a major test or exam. Pop quizzes are a great motivator for students. For example, a student is performing very low in a certain class. Then a teacher assigns a pop quiz. And after a pop quiz, the student finds out he did well on the test. He or she will be quite proud of the result and will then be motivated to continue learning and studying. This motivation for studying will lead to better results on major exams. A vast majority of professors use short and/or long answer test; however, this can be damaging too many of their students’ scores. Pink gives the example of Zappos founder Tony Hsieh who gives his employees the autonomy to work without scripts, monitoring, or timing (101). Many educational facilities extend students concerns toward certainly important subjects such as math, english, language and social studies. Summative assessments are a mirror to student thinking. Summative assessments help teachers and students see a trajectory of their learning. The assessment that we administered asked students to answer a series of questions using information from a graph. It also prompted them to create a graph using the results of survey for our field trip. On a final note, the time is ripe for all concerned to take a step back and re-assess the real benefits of examinations. It is an exigent circumstance which we are in. As society evolves and technology advances, there is much more to education than simply monotonously memorizing the bare facts of the world. The globalised world of today requires our children to embrace the earth and be innovative. Creativity fuels the innovation engine, with examinations, it is difficult to see how the imaginative aspects of their minds can be developed. One can envision the miserable world our future generations will thrive in, if no steps are taken to keep up with the present day’s needs. We cannot allow ourselves to be entrenched in deeply traditional methods, antiquated values no longer function in this day and age.
I use assessments to assist me to identify and to develop their learning process. Assessment is not about the final grade, but the learning experience. I would rather have my students know how to look up information and apply knowledge than to memorize it and forget it ten minutes after the test. Learning is a life-long adventure and I want my students to know how to adjust and cope during their adventure. I want my students to have the skills for researching and finding the answer. It is not always that answer which demonstrates learning; it is in the process in which you find the answer that demonstrates learning.
Giving students the ability to learn things outside of their school environment such as taking them to field trips, gives them the ability of hands on learning and visual learning. It also gets them out of the school environment and into a more open broad background.
