Polymer creatures are very fascinating, because they can grow when put in liquids, and experiments are going to be conducted relating to this growing. A polymer is a very long chain of molecules strung together (What). Polymers are very versatile, and can have almost limitless colors and characteristics (Definition). One of these qualities is absorbency, and some can absorb as much as five hundred times their weight in water (Growing). It is hypothesized that if the polymer creatures are submerged in water for a day it will at least double in size, while it will not grow as much when put in Sprite. The Polymer Creature Experiment seems like a simple experiment, but there are many steps that must be followed. Firstly, actually get a polymer creature, along with water, Sprite, and cups. Take one of the cups with water, and …show more content…
fill the second cup with Sprite. Then label the cups so the contents don't get mixed up. Place one polymer creature in each liquid. Leave the polymer creatures there for five minutes, and take them out to measure them. Record the progress of the creatures, and replace them. Repeat this process every five minutes. Then leave the creatures overnight. Measure them for the final time the next day, and don't replace them. Before 5 min 10 min 15 min 1 day Creature 1 (Sprite) 30 mm 1.05 g 30 mm 0.42 g 40 mm 1.56 g 40 mm 1.62 g 60 mm 4.74 g Creature 2 (Water) 30 mm 1.05 g 35 mm 1.56 g 45 mm 1.65 g 50 mm 2.53 g 60 mm 5.60 g The chart above shows the results of the experiment.
Increments of five minutes were used for measuring the creatures. By the end of the experiment, the creature in Sprite had grown to double in length. The creature grown in water also doubled exactly in length. However, while the lengths were the same, creature two gained much more mass than creature one. Creature one grew from one point zero five grams to four point seventy-four grams. In comparison, creature two started the same as creature one, and grew to five point six grams. To conclude from the results of the experiment, the hypothesis, which was that the creature in water would double in size, while the creature in Sprite would not grow as much, was correct. Both creatures doubled in length. However, the creature growing in water gained more mass than the creature in Sprite. During this experiment, it was learned that water is more absorbent than Sprite. Much information was gathered, and reliable answers were gained from the tests
conducted.
Two members of the group were instructed to visit the laboratory each day of the experiment to water and measure the plants (Handout 1). The measurements that were preformed were to be precise and accurate by the group by organizing a standardized way to measure the plants. The plants were measured from the level of the soil, which was flat throughout all the cups, to the tip of the apical meristems. The leaves were not considered. The watering of the plants took place nearly everyday, except for the times the lab was closed. Respective of cup label, the appropriate drop of solution was added to the plant, at the very tip of the apical meristems.
On the container, the researchers wrote down their first initial, last name and lab section. The researchers then poured spring water into the cylindrical container about halfway and then set it aside. Next, the researchers transferred the Planarian using a small plastic pipette into an empty petri dish filled with just enough water for the Planarian to swim around freely. After the successful transfer into the petri dish The researchers then measured how long the Planarian was using the unit millimeters.
Thyroid and metabolism hormones play a large role in the daily lives of all living species. Thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism and the metabolism is responsible for maintaining a specific range for the biochemical reactions that occur in the body (Martini 2014). The most important hormone for metabolic maintenance is thyroxine (T4). This hormone also plays a large role in body heat regulation. It is produced by the pituitary gland and secreted by the thyroid gland. The thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) must trigger the thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) to release thyroid hormones to the thyroid gland. These hormones are under control of the hypothalamus, or main neural control center. Propylthiouracil (PTU) is a medication used to treat
Gummy Bears are mostly made of gelatin and sugar. Gelatin is a permeable substance which means it allows liquids to pass through it. A sponge is a good example of a permeable object. It allows liquid to pass through it and expands as liquid is trapped inside. A solid object, like a rock, is not permeable and will not allow water to pass through it. If you place a rock in a cup of water no water will pass through the rock making it expand. The rock will be the same size when removed from the water as it was when placed
In a world where human behaviors can be almost laughable, satire provides an artistic outlet to combat these incidents. Authors use satire to speak out against issues, in which they would be the minority opinion, in an informal and unintimidating way by using humor and sarcasm. In the short essay, “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History,” the author, Jennifer Price, uses this technique to speak out against conformity. Price cleverly satirizes the shallow and materialistic aspects of a consumerist society by using irony, incongruity, and parody to expose how ludicrous and easily manipulated people are in this commercial society.
A good example would be the experiments with the concentrations of 20% to 60% concentration results to show the change. In the 20% concentration I noticed a decrease in the percentage change in mass for the experiment the percentage was _____ while for the concentration of sucrose 60% the change was _____ we can see that the percentage change in mass is decreasing thus we can conclude that the difference of the initial from the final and as it gets greater that means the mass of the potato changed massively.
The size of this depends on the mass of the object and the size of the
The ingredients used in making slime contain fundamental additives that, when mixed together, cause the thick, gooey, slime every kid enjoys. Polymers are made from several smaller molecules joined by chemical bonds. The polyvinyl allows the mixture to feel slimy. Combing the polyvinyl and Borax together creates a chemical reaction. The mixture becomes cold, thicker, and elastic. This combination mixed together produces slime that is fun and safe for all ages.
Materials used for this experiment includes 8 plastic cups, 8 ziplock bags, and rubbing alcohol. The plastic cups and ziplock bags were numbered from one through 8. The cups were placed in two different habitats; four cups in each habitat. The first habitat was near a canal and the second habitat was under a tree. In the first habitat, a six-inch hole were dug and cup one was
The Exploratorium was a great experience, there was a lot of things to do and experiment with. There was things like a smoke ring maker and a voice modulator that could make your voice higher or lower. There was this one invention that blew out air and a ball would float in mid air and it would hover in the air as long as the wind was blowing. Also there was this tube that was filled up with water. There was also this knob that controlled sound that would be eliminated in the tube, and the more high pitched the sound was the the more the water would move. Also this one exhibit had a shredded magnets in a bigger tube and then there was two magnets. One on each side and the tube was filled up with water and when you took some of the shredded
Arthropods account for 80 percent of all animal species. Because arthropods have so many amazing features, they are very important animals. They have an exoskeleton, and an open circulatory system. Every time you look at an arthropod you will see a segmented body. Arthropods are astounding creatures! Without them our food chain would be all over the place!
water for growth. They can again introduce water and moisture retention techniques in their forms. For
Astronauts found a planet identical to Earth a couple days ago. The astronauts found the planet. Last week, astronauts were sent to find a new planet to sustain life.
Have you ever wondered which flower would absorb something the fastest? Or Which flower will change color in food dye the fastest? Carnations will absorb it the fastest. This statement is the hypothesis of the whole project. It can be proven right or wrong. This question needs to be explored it is interesting to know which flower will absorb a liquid up first. It is important because it gives you a look into the scientific world of how flowers absorb food dye and shows you such things like, How is a flower able to get enough water.
When plants such as seaweeds or others that grow under water, their parts are supported on all sides by hydrostatic pressure. There is not much difference in the density between plant cells and their surrounding liquid environment. Aquatic plants do not require significant structural support; their cell walls only contain polysaccharides, c...
