Women Fine Artists When we talk about the fine arts, we automatically think of great artists like Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and so forth. However, none of these great fine artists are female. Yes, there are a couple of famous female artists throughout history such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, and Frida Kahlo, but they do not amount to the same number or fame as male artists. Today, many aspiring fine artists are female, but the times for them to shine has barely begun. She also discusses in her book that women artists had many struggles and even gave up their own freedom to be an artist. Strumwasser further mentions that in order for a woman to reach fame in the art world, she had to go through her father or husband, who had some kind of artist background (65). It was the only way a woman fine artist could gain access to artistry materials and skills- through a man. Female artists are barely making their mark in the art industry compared to men now, because of the long history we have with art- how it was always dominated by male artists. Yes, there are a lot more female artists now than in the past, but not all of them are written down in art history books. This is because women artists simply lack the exposure they need to even be considered a professional artist. Strangely enough, some male artists find female ones to be inferior to them in the fine arts. Furthermore, there are these aged-old male artists, like George Baselitz who ridicule women of painting- believing that “women don’t paint very well.” If we trace back to the history of fine arts and women, we can see that the problem female artists face today with exposure in the art industry, lies within in roots. It has only been a couple of centuries, but I believe that the art world is slowly changing and evolving for the better for women artists. Living in the 19th century there wasn't a lot of women painters. Rosa Bonheur was one of the women painters in this century. Animals was mostly the subject matte she paints. Rosa was known for her realistic paintings.
The male artists portrayed women as a projection of their ideal woman. The artist’s often overlooked the women’s identity’s and personalities in favour of creating aesthetically pleasing art for themselves and other superior males to view and enjoy. Her paintings helped break gender and class barriers and led the way for women to be accepted in society as artists. Many famous male renaissance artists copied her artwork style, which can be seen in the works of Peter Paul Rubens. Art could be displayed in many different forms; through photography, zines, poetry, or even a scrapbook. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.
Prior to the 20th century, female artists were the minority members of the art world (Montfort). They lacked formal training and therefore were not taken seriously. If they did paint, it was generally assumed they had a relative who was a relatively well known male painter. Sofonisba Anguissola was one of the most prominent female painters of the Renaissance. Not only was she one of only four women mentioned by Giorgio Vasari in his famous Lives of the Artists, she also paved the way for later female artists. One may look at Sofonisba’s upbringing and assume that her talents were a result of her wealth and family background. However, if investigated more carefully through both analytical secondary sources and primary sources, it becomes clear that Sofonisba’s painting abilities formed because of her talent, not her wealth. Sofonisba integrated herself into the artistic community and used her second-class status as a female painter to accelerate her career: because she was not able to study as an apprentice in a workshop, her models were usually family members, she pioneered the style of genre painting. Historian Joan Kelly argues in her essay, “Did Women Have a Renaissance?” that women did not experience a Renaissance during the actual Renaissance. Sofonisba’s training and connections were extremely helpful to launch her career, refuting Kelly’s argument that women only were taught “charm” during the Renaissance. In addition, Sofonisba married her second husband for love, not for money, debunking Kelly’s argument that marriages during the Renaissance were not based on love. Though Sofonisba’s life as a woman is a unique case in terms of wealth and profession, her success and fame, talent, and marriage (van dyck?) disprove Kelly’s argument that women did not have a Renaissance during the Renaissance.
The Harlem Renaissance, a time of global appreciation for the black culture, was a door opening for African American women. Until then, African Americans, let alone African American women, were neither respected nor recognized in the artistic world. During this time of this New Negro Movement, women sculptors were able to connect their heritages with the present issues in America. There is an abundance of culture and history to be learned from these sculptures because the artists creatively intertwine both. Meta Warrick Fuller and Edmonia Lewis, two of the most popular sculptors of this time, were able to reflect their native heritages and the dynamics of society through their artwork.
Mary Cassatt is one of the most famous female figures in the art world and aided in the popularization of Impressionism. Her work was simple yet impactful, and left its viewers wanting more. The main focus in most of her works was of mother and child or of women doing simple daily tasks. Her broken brush strokes and bright color palettes made her pieces pleasant and full of life. Though her work was not at first accepted, she kept painting and worked hard to make a name for herself and to change the art world into something more diverse and accepting.
Across Europe, between 1400 and 1650, there were women present in all major styles of time. They worked along side of great artists and were developing new techniques and styles. Women also played a very important role in the Renaissance. Although not as well documented as their male counterparts, women worked along with the other great masters, were just as innovating, and were key in developing new techniques.
Cindy Sherman and Frida Kahlo were pioneers when it came to artistic creativity and relating to femininity. Without these two female self-portraiture artists, art wouldn’t be what it is today. They had definite differences when it came to their style, but in the end when it came to the purpose they both wanted to use stylistic conventions during their time and they also wanted to change those conventions. Whether it was the background or the character portrayed they have their own defined style and that makes these two women memorable artists.
This is a misconception because every great artist needs to be nurtured and trained. The fact that we don’t have a great Eskimo artist, as Nochlin points out, is not because there is no talent in the Eskimos, but because talent has not been cultivated. The view of artistic production through the female perspective brought high visibility to the female artist, and was the beginning of many influential female artists whom made both political and strong social statements through the centuries. In the course of human events, women have been subjected to being seen as far less superior than men. Women through most of history have never been seen as equals to men and seen as pitiful and slave like, but women have tried to change the views of society and become equal. Feminist art was a major contributor in helping women fight these societal views during the feminist movement. Many talented women artist banded together during the 1960-1970s to be able fight the societal view as a woman. Their art was sometimes not accepted by society for exploring subjects that were not accepted for that time. They fought to make their topics they talked about socially accepted.
