Political socialization is the process in which individuals gain their sense of political beliefs and values through public experiences and the people around them. Each individual has their own understanding and perceptions on every political topic they hear, whether their values stem from their childhood or political involvement as a citizen. Individual’s values can grow from their parents, coaches, teachers, friends, family members, coworkers, leadership, or even children. Political socialization impacts an individual's beliefs and values by helping to shape someone into who they're meant to be. My personal experience of political socialization was primarily impacted by my family. During reunions and holidays, politics is always one of those …show more content…
My results lean towards a conservative republican. This did not surprise me as my beliefs and values align with the Republican Party. Donald Trump and Nikki Haley both have the same stance on controversial concepts like abortion, federal taxes, immigration laws, gay marriage, firearms, and interest rates and inflation. The bottom two candidates that emerged from my answers were Jill Stein, a member of the Green Party, and Cornel West, a member of the Independent Party. I am not surprised by these candidates' position at the bottom of my results due to their opposing beliefs and values. Jill Stein’s beliefs include free education including college, abolishing student debt, increasing public school funding, decreasing taxes on lower income while increasing taxes on the wealthy, fighting climate change and other environmental issues, and cutting military spending. Although she is registered as a member of the Green Party, many of her beliefs also align with the Democratic Party like taxing the wealthy and free education for all. Cornel West longs to fight for justice for all …show more content…
Political socialization, as discussed in the first paragraph, is evident in everyone's lives. We all gain our sense of political identity through those pouring into us, whether that be our parents or news outlets. I personally had a good understanding of my political values prior to partaking in the quiz, however, the results are evident that those who surrounded me as a child helped to shape both myself and my political identity. In addition to having political conversations with the valued people in your life, it is also very important to do your own research on various topics. Doing your own research can help one to fact check what others are saying and can lead to the discovery of a new understanding of a previous topic. Common ways that people do their own research include looking at candidate campaigns to understand what they are fighting for, searching up previous office history if a candidate held a different governmental position, watching news outlets, reading the newspaper, or asking questions on search
Millions of citizens around the United States, at some point in their lifetime, obtain a political ideology. Typically, their political values are influenced by their parents. Political scientists have identified that around age eleven, children begin to develop political opinion. According to Wilson’s, American Government: Institutions and Policies, 91% of a high school senior class indentified with the same party as their parents (American Government 158). I can attest to this since I in fact have the same party association as my parents. Ever since I was young, I categorized myself as a Democrat due to the fact that my elders were. However, as I have matured I am able to recognize the beliefs and ideologies that followers of certain parties possess. Since I have been more exposed to the political arena I am able analyze the issues more critically and hence I continuously question whether I should classify myself as a Democrat or Republican.
Throughout the world there are many diverse political cultures. A political culture is the attitudes, beliefs or practices among a group of likeminded individuals.(Giardino pg. 27) There are different categories that embrace a political culture like an Individualistic, traditionalistic and moralistic. An individualistic culture is one that prefers less government involvement. The traditionalistic culture maintains government as the social and economic hierarchy and does not like change. The moralistic culture favors public good and it revolves around social issues. Demographics such as population size, growth, distribution and diversity among other factors are what shape its political culture.
A lot of things have played a role in my personal political socialization. Political ideology is the places where you have informed your beliefs from. The first example of where I get my personal political socialization is from my family. Second I have influence from my location in the U.S.A. Finally I get influence from Narragansett High School which is the school I currently attend. That is where I received my personal political socialization from.
The views of my parents were the first experiences that I had relating to politics, and they helped shape the political opinions and beliefs that I hold today. In this paper, I will be discussing the political party I identify with, as well as which interest groups have influenced my life and beliefs the most. I will also discuss specific policies that I support, and what we as Americans can and cannot do because of the laws passed by the political party that I support. I will also touch on my personal level of interest and involvement in my political party.
To understand American society fully, one must understand America’s political makeup. In order to do that, it is necessary to understand a person’s political opinions and how they came about. This is done by examining how political ideology and political socialization influence society and individuals within that society. Political ideology is the set of beliefs that shape the way someone views government action; it is the way that they think the government should act and react to certain situations. In the United States, the two main political ideologies are liberal and conservative. How American’s teach the tenets and goals of the political system is known as political socialization. This is typically done through parents, peers, school,
The process of political socialization is not merely a quick development of ideologies but an extended network of agents influencing us at every stage of our lives to implore us of good and proper behaviors and thought patterns to abide by. As stated in Texas politics, there is a difference in general socialization and political socialization but both are significantly influential in our critical development patterns (3.1).
Political socialization begins early on in life and is an ongoing process affecting individuals throughout. It is how people eventually identify personal beliefs and expectations in American politics. These political views can include our level of patriotism, faith in the democratic system, standards by which we hold governing bodies, and opinions regarding public policies. From the playground to the classroom, the office to the dinner table, much of our lives affect our political opinions. The most easily identified agents of this are family, schooling, peers, mass media, political parties and religious influences. Furthermore, these means indoctrinate us in the political society through four basic methods: latent, manifest, affective, and instrumental socialization.
Socialization is a never ending process that continues to change our perspectives to help us learn and adapt to a social reality. This lifelo.ng process can be split up into two different parts; primary socialization, the first socialization an individual undergoes in childhood, and secondary socialization, when an individual adapts to a specific group within society. Although one may believe that secondary socialization has more power over primary socialization since it is current and therefore more relevant, primary socialization has more authority considering that it lays down the foundation for all future socializations. Our initial values, attitudes, and actions are more important since we internalize them

Buckminster Fuller, a renowned philosopher once stated that “we must progress to the stage of doing all the right things for all the right reasons instead of doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons” (Cosmography). Much of this statement holds true as the Chinese, Japanese, and African Americans continued to face issues in the structure of race relations even after the war. Although historians can argue that World War II abolished the archaic policies and provided new opportunities, the discrimination perpetuates, just not overtly through politics. For the Chinese, assimilating into American society proved to be a difficult task ever since the beginning because of anti-Chinese sentiments and laws. Actions such as limiting the involvement
The first motives which push me the political issues were the political writings and movies. There is a rule that is probably valid for the most, “I read a sentence and my whole life is transferred.” I accept it is seen exaggerated however young people have already be ready for these kinds of experiences which fire the ideas.

Politics is one of the most debated topics in the country today. With the wide variety of values present in America, it is bound to be a difficult topic to discuss. I’ve grown up in a family of democrats with religiously republican grandparents. Considering myself an Independent leaning democratic, I can usually calmly talk politics with my family. This year’s election has made any conversation surrounding politics toxic to my family and creates a large argument of one side or the other and no in between.
Socialization is a long-term process that every human being undergoes as he or she becomes a functioning member of society. Socialization refers to the internalizing of all of the lessons from many sources concerning ways of behaving that are approved or expected by society, as individuals mature through every stage in the life cycle (DeFleur and Dennis, 582).
