Politics is one of the most debated topics in the country today. With the wide variety of values present in America, it is bound to be a difficult topic to discuss. I’ve grown up in a family of democrats with religiously republican grandparents. Considering myself an Independent leaning democratic, I can usually calmly talk politics with my family. This year’s election has made any conversation surrounding politics toxic to my family and creates a large argument of one side or the other and no in between. Our current election process takes place every four years in November. It begins with the primary elections and proceeds to nominating conventions. During the conventions is when our political parties select candidates and nominees announce vice presidential running mates. These candidates tour the country and collect support. The final step occurs when the country votes, or when the electoral college votes. In the United States, citizen votes don’t truly affect who wins, the decision depends on who wins the majority of the electoral college votes. After the decision is made the new president is then inaugurated on January 20th. The majority of the time elections in the U.S. focus on two of our political parties, the Democratic party or the Republican party. The nation is split between these two and many people are describing it as a ‘pick your poison’ which is not a very comforting phrase while choosing the next leader of the nation. Looking at different polls and trends, I had a very difficult time predicting the outcome. In the end, I predict and hope that the next president of our nation to be Hillary. With her background involved in politics and government she would not need such a long period to adjust into a power holding position. Her values and her positions on foreign affairs would also benefit America more than the values carried by
