Review questions Chap. 5:

1. I feel that the main task of the police should be to both enforce the law and provide community service. Both ideas should be performed in a similar fashion, as they should be servicing the community by enforcing the law and protecting citizens from harm.

2. In order to be a police officer you should follow by a certain standard. In this position, you need to have obtained certain skills where you must be strong both physically and mentally. Officers should be forced to spend “time in rank,” and be promoted as they become more prepared for higher positions.

The concept of broken windows policy is that if there are too many “broken windows,” in an area, it will attract crime. It generally describes the role of the police as maintainers of community order and safety. It can be a complicated situation rather than successful, but results showed in a study that there are cuts in crime, disorder, and calls for service in treatment areas, but not in control areas.

5. There were problems that investigators and forensic experts faced. Previously, technology did not help much towards investigation. When determining what lead to a certain crime, situation factors were put into consideration, which was one major problem. Another major problem was that forensic experts did not have access to the proper capacity of forensic lab equipment.

6. Community policing is a policing partnership used to fight against crimes. Initially, there were problems that arose with this type of policing. However, as time went on the relationship between the police and the community got better. The idea of community policing is pushed more than it was previously.

Review questions Chap. 6:

1. Female and male officers should not have the same duties in a police department. Not all females will be able to handle a situation as well as male could. For instance,

I feel that officer’s working the street will eventually produce a cynical personality. It will ultimately result in losing trust within civilians. It would be much more effective if they were to socialize and interact with civilians more often. This would help with improving their relationship.

4. If a police officer orders an unarmed person running away from a burglary to stop, and the suspect keeps running and is shot by the officer, it would not be considered as committed murder by the officer. According to the law, it is categorized as the fleeing-felon rule. This authorizes the use of deadly force when the suspect runs away.

5. It would be more efficient to live in a society that abolished police discretion and used a full enforcement policy. Doing this would lower the probability of a mistake occurring. There is no room for error. There are some instances where police officers wrongfully commit an act on someone who was not involved in crime. Situations like this might stir up problems with those impacted by wrong police discretion.

6. Including illegally seized evidence would not be permitted in a trial. It should be excluded, as it would violate the fourth amendment. This would include any evidence that was collected without an authorized warrant. An individual could also wind up suing and forcing the officers involved to pay
