The need for a solution to this problem is to for one to resolve the increasing death of young African American citizens. The need to restore the trust between the police force and the community along with the dignity and accountably to the police department. The solution will be ideal to identify that the police force needs to bridge the widening gap between the force and the African American community in order to build and foster trust. The basic need also includes getting the media, community, government, and the police department to create awareness about the detrimental effect of systematic bias such as racial bias. Every citizen of the country should treat equally and police should not stop anyone without a probable cause. The need for universal mandates, training regulations, and recertification is considerably required nationwide. The use concrete evidence is needed when officers unlawfully make arrest or fire at a citizen based on systematic bias which may need use of body cameras and traffic cameras. One question has arise, does the Department of Justice have the right to file a lawsuit on the Ferguson’s police department based on the unconstitutional practices? If so, will change occurs? The DOJ does have the right to initiate such action. Based on the textbook, American’s Courts, by David Neubauer and Henry Fradella 11th edition, “some disputes are viewed as so disruptive to society that they require special treatment because civil remedies are not enough (p. 43).” During the Ferguson’s trial, the Justice Department explained why they could not convict the officer on federal charges for shooting the unarmed African American Michael Brown. One of the reason is because the officer did not “constitute a prosecutable violation … and [there is] no evidence” that disproved that officer Wilson had fired based on fear. The Baltimore City police have faced a myriad of problems in the last year. The riots following the Freddie Gray arrest were reported around the country and created a situation where the Governor was forced to call in the National Guard to protect the city. Community leaders report that African American’s are stopped, searched and arrested at a far greater number than Caucasian’s. The Baltimore city police are at an impasse with the community at this time, it is up to the city leaders and the police officials to come up with some real solutions to the issues that can no longer be ignored.
One of the major problems the city of Newark faces is the economic situation of many of its inhabitants. The generational poverty and unemployment combined with the history of racism and police violence continue to perpetuate crime culture. Thus, for true change to occur the economic situation must improve, which is no easy feat. Another solution that may help the problems Newark and its police department face are the removal of stop and frisk procedures and the implementation of community policing. If the community can trust the police department and see police officers without having to fear being killed or losing a loved one; then the community would be more committed to working with police to reduce crime in the area. Building trust with the community should be the first step the Newark Police Department takes to make a change in the city. Police Body Cameras Due to devastating events that have occurred between policemen and civilians, law enforcements find it liable for police officers to be fitted with body cameras. In doing so it is thought to bring an increase in trust in the community, reduce brutality and crime, as well as elucidate good cops still around. I feel body cameras will bring more awareness to police departments when it comes to the honesty in their staff’s actions when they are unsupervised. They can be used as hard evidence in courtrooms, to help make the correct judgment on the situation in question.
In order to diminish police brutality, excessive force, and prejudice behaviors in the police officers, several actions must be set in motion. The police hiring process, training, in-field monitoring, and disciplinary actions must be adjusted to eliminate discriminatory actions against citizens. Likewise, it is a necessity for citizens to be informed of their rights, civil liberties, and how they can resolve corruption within the justice system. These actions seek to shrink the number of minorities who are racial profiled and brutalized by police officers. A more stringent hiring process, it will help curtail unethical and unprofessional police officers. Police training must be altered so that situations are handled safely and impartial. In-field monitoring with eliminate police officers from managing to catch police officers who brutality handle citizens. Disciplinary actions help to prosecute police officers to break the law. They are constantly spreading hateful propaganda and creating danger for the number-one protector of black lives, police officers.
