IV. Suggestions and/or Recommendations In my opinion, the many different views of police culture can vary in many different situations. I say this because of the many different views this can be misleading at times. I think what's needed is reform of a police culture that has often infected relations between police and blacks, destabilized respect for cops and the law, and set the basis for the many deaths. The overall image of the police offers is an overview of the public’s perception of the police in reality. Without the public’s view of this police culture wouldn’t have the look it has now. Many of the citizens never had a one on one altercation with the law they only base their opinions on experiences with the police influence from other citizens, and that where they get their general image of the police. Many study indicates that police courteousness/friendliness in the direction of the citizen in a recent contact with police exerts the most powerful influence on the citizen’s general assessment of the police. However more studies have indicated that people’s previous overall views of police have sturdier influence on their evaluation of a succeeding specific contact than their evaluation of a specific contact has on subsequent overall views of police. The majority of the American public has not had face-to-face contact with a police officer. Most people respect the mass media as their primary source of information about the many crimes that go on around them, and crime news is the background for most mass media interpretations of police work. Social media present images of police that misrepresent & twist the realities of every-day police officers work. Though more confidently presented than lawyers and judiciaries, police officers are more often than not presented as useless rule-breakers. Stating back to the year of 1993 police officers constantly rate among the top three institutions out of thirteen in public confidence. Police rates are much higher than the rest of the criminal justice system. Large majorities of adult citizens are fulfilled or very pleased with the police services in their various regions. Though there is difference in fulfilment levels across city powers, most fall within the 80-90 percentage range. The majority of school-age children trust their local police, but a big portion do not, and this disbelief is mainly strong among nonwhite students. These problems com on when researchers found that some of the social values were found to effect the police behaviors mainly when it came to race, gender and class. Differences in police behavior tend to display the deviations in the way the society view, deviations in police force comes more slowly than in society at large. Organizational culture is a set of beliefs, values, and behavioral guides shared by an organization's members (Giblin, 2014). Police culture is a highly bureaucratic, rule bound culture. The job is highly stressful with a varying degree of personalities. According to the video and in my experience, police culture generally haws two parts. The first is how police interact while doing their jobs on the street and the second in the way officers interact on a organizational level. Often, police get more frustrated and outspoken at an organizational level. However, these two parts can have an effect of one another.

For the last score police brutality has been a controversial topic for many people. Many people argue that law enforcement is no longer doing its job properly. Instead of working to build a safe environment, many police officers are always been extremely detrimental to society. They are marginalizing and brutalizing the community, especially black people. The police are not doing their job properly. Actually, so many black people have been killed unjustly by the same authorities who suppose to protect them. Take as examples the treatment of Amadou Diallo, Ousmane Zongo, and Eric Garner, who were marginalized, brutalized and killed by some police officers who were supposed to protect them.
The New York Police Department has a mission to "preserve peace, reduce fear, maintain order," and protect its civilians in their communities (NYPD, 2016). On the contrary, civilians do not see the police officers as individuals who are there to protect them because they do not trust the police officers or the justice system. The duty of a police officer is to protect the people with the laws and enforce them, not hurt the people. For all the African American women and men that have been killed by a police officer should be brought to justice. However, this is not the solution to the problem of police brutality in America. The solution to police brutality is the proper training and certification of police officers, so they understand how to handle various situations without using lethal weapons. These changes have manifested both positive and negative reverberations in the way we perform our job. Police officials have contemplated for years over the key to maintaining a positive image for their organization. Unfortunately, several incidents in the past years have altered society's perception of police in some communities. Police in America are no longer strangers to innovation born of scandal.
The negative views of everyday people often make work hard for officers, adding more stress to their careers. The general public regularly criticizes officers for using excessive force and brutality, especially when a police officer ends up killing a suspect or criminal. Oftentimes, especially when a white police officer shoots a citizen of a minority race, the general public is quick to find faults in the officer, blaming the officer for being racist. However, cold, hard statistics show that the majority of police officers are, in fact, white, and the neighborhoods in which these officers are placed in tend to be high-crime areas with many minority citizens living there (Miller “When Cops Kill”). In addition, people might say that a citizen who was shot was not armed; however, almost anything close to the shot individual could have been turned into a deadly weapon that he or she could have used to wound or kill the officer involved. Police officers must rely on instinct and quick decision making to keep a potential situation calm. These instincts have been seen to cause more harm than good when racial profiling is involved. These biases against a race could have been implanted from childhood, personal experience, or learned behaviors. These events involving racial profiling, and police brutality, have become more common and have gained national recognition. The national stage creates a following for the wrongful misjudgment and most often over use of power by the police officer. The wrongful death of people by an ardent officer due to his lack of judgment of the situation is unacceptable and must be fixed. I believe police officers need to complete a series of simulations, need to be trained to enter potentially racial profiling situations not without intent but as a precautionary measure, and lastly I believe police officer partners must monitor each other for over use of power of mistreatment of the suspect. The police officer stands at the top of the criminal justice system in a nation where crime rates are high and where the demands for illegal goods and services are widespread. These conditions create a situation in which the police officer is confronted with opportunity to accept a large number of favors or grants. Police corruption occurs in many forms and observers of police behavior agree that it falls into nine specific areas. Drug related police corruption differs from other types of police corruption. In addition to protecting criminals or ignoring their activities, officers involved in drug related corruption were more likely to be involved in stealing drugs and/or money from drug dealers, selling drugs, lying under oath about illegal searches, and other crimes. Although not enough data was available upon which to base an estimate of the extent of corruption, the amount of cases of police corruption proved that it was striking enough to concern the public. The most commonly identified patterns of corruption involved small groups of officers who protected and assisted each other in criminal activities. The demands of the public and politicians, however, have caused an outrage and a fear that open investigations and accusations of corruption will cause the problem of distrust in the police to grow even greater.
Police shootings occur all over the world but are a huge problem within the United States. We continue to hear more and more about them. These shootings are making headlines. Front page news it seems almost weekly. All the shootings go one of two ways. Either a Police Officer has been shot or a Police Officer has shot a citizen, but either way the final result is death. Whether an Officer has been shot or an Officer has shot someone these cases seem to be related to one thing, fear. People in today’s society feel as though they can’t trust Police Officers as they are there to hurt and kill them. And Police Officers feel as though they are in danger of doing their everyday duties because people see them as the “bad guys” and want to hurt or kill them. Yes, police brutality and racism still exist, but not all cops are bad. Yes there are still bad citizens in this world that want to kill and harm others, but not all citizens are bad. When one is a police officer one is obligated to serve and protect his /her community putting their life first before the rest. However, in this generation, policemen are hurting and murdering black men that are either unarmed or innocent. In the Civil Rights era, people had to take a stand, fight for what was right, and united as one. In the United States, black men are perceived as dangerous and murderous. Black people are humans but treated like animals and each second black men are treated like deer and rabbits during hunting season.
The New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for helping the community to decrease or reduce crime, corruption and improve the responsibility of safety and protection in New Zealand. There is a need to make changes to the police culture in order to improve the performance of their organisation. However there are three fundamental errors that need to be addressed which will be discussed in this essay. Firstly, there is a lack of an established sense of urgency which has the potential to jeopardize the future of the organization. Secondly is, not creating a powerful enough guiding coalition which means there is a lack of communication which resulted in an absence of leadership and teamwork from frontline staff to national headquarters. Finally, an undercommunicating the vision by a factor of ten that organisation leader needs to communicate visions and strategies. These three errors are relevant as they are pivotal in the implementation of a managing change programme. Recommendations are also provided to improve on how the New Zealand Police can be enhanced within a management perspective.
