Poetry is literature that conveys deeper feelings by using connotations, poetic devices, rhymes, and language. Poets use rhyme scheme, structured pattern in the sonnet that rhyme the words at the end of a line. Imagery is used to make the reader think and feel about what the author wants to convey about topics such as love. In the poems “What My Lips Have Kissed, And Where And Why”, by Edna Vincent Millay, and “Sonnet 130”, by William Shakespeare;; the authors use rhyme scheme and imagery. Shakespeare uses the change in rhyme scheme as an ironic surprise in the last couplet, while Millay uses the rhyme scheme to reminisce about lost love, both poems are infused with imagery to paint a vivid picture for the reader.

In Sonnet Shakespeare elaborates on his mistress’ image proclaiming, “If hair be wires, black wires grow on her head” (4 Shakespeare). He has created an image of his mistress’ hair as stringy and unattractive conveying the image to the reader that she is run down and exhausted. Millay uses imagery to represent her lost love by explaining, “I have forgotten in what arms have lain” (2 Millay). She is conveying an image of the number of lovers she has been involved with. On the other hand, Shakespeare’s style of imagery is to conjure up a vivid image while Millay’s imagery is more subdued.

When it comes to imagery, Shakespeare’s is vivid and paints his picture boldly in the readers mind when he states, “And in some perfumes is there more delight/ Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks” (7-8 Shakespeare). Here he is plainly saying perfumes give more delight than the horrid breath of his mistress. Millay’s imagery is subtle and is meant to make the reader ponder on its meaning, “ Thus in the winter stands a lonely tree/ Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one/ Yet know it boughs more silent than before” (9-11 Millay). Edna St. Vincent Millay's "What Lips My Lips Have Kissed, and Where and Why" is an effective short poem, which feeds on the dissonance between the ideal of love and its reality, heartbreak. In William Shakespeare's "Let Me Not to The Marriage of True Minds," the effectiveness is weakened by its idealiality and metaphysical stereotype. In contrast to Millay, Shakespeare paints a genuine portrait of what love should be but unfortunately never really is. This factor is what makes his poem difficult to relate to, thus weakening the effect on the reader. These poems were published quite far apart from each other, three-hundred and fourteen years to be exact, which might explain the shift in idealism. Though both circumnavigate the concept of love, the effect left within both writers based on personal affairs dramatically differentiates the personas of both speakers.

William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130”, was published in the mid-1590, and published with the rest of Shakespeare’s sonnets in 1609. The sonnet has fourteen lines, and divided into three quatrains and one couplet at the end. The rhyme scheme is cross rhyme, with the last two lines being couplets that rhyme. The sonnet compares between nature and the poets’ lover or mistress. He shows a more realistic view of his lover. Needless to say his significant other wasn’t physically attractive, yet he loved her inside beauty. Today we may use the term, “It’s not all about looks, but what’s inside”.
Conclusion: Both Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barret Browning and Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare use poetic devices such as: word choice, figurative language, and imagery to delve into the passions of fervent love.
When he writes "And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare as any she, belied with false compare." (lines 13-14) in the final couplet, one responds with an enlightened appreciation, making them understand Shakespeare's message that true love consists of something deeper than physical beauty. Shakespeare expresses his ideas in a wonderful fashion. Not only does he express himself through direct interpretation of his sonnet, but also through the levels at which he styled and produced it. This shows that the poet appreciates her human beauties unlike a Petrarchan sonnet that stresses a woman's cheek as red a rose or her face white as snow. Straying away from the dazzling rhetoric, this Shakespearean poem projects a humane and friendly impression and elicits laughter while expressing a truer love. A Petrarchan sonnet states that love must never change; this poem offers a more genuine expression of love by describing a natural woman.

Though ballads and Sonnets are poems that can depict a picture of someone’s beloved, they can have many differences. For instance, a Ballad is a story in short stanzas such as a song would have, where as a sonnet typical, has a traditional structure of 14 lines employing several rhyme schemes and adheres to a tight thematic organization. Both Robert Burn’s ballad “The Red, Red, Rose, and William Shakespeare’s “of the Sonnet 130 “ express their significant other differently.
