The story that my group decided to read is “Pancakes” by Joan Bauer. The project option that I chose was the poem, and it was difficult to relate the story into a poem, partly because the protagonist, Jill, has a very barren personality. She knows what she likes and what she will not put up with, which is any type of disorder. She finds organizing CDs a acceptable activity to do with a boyfriend. She is bitter about losing her boyfriend to her organization chaos, but she refuses to change. She is very proud of her ability to have things under control, always having a plan. How could she possibly predict sixty-six environmentalist showing up without notice and offering a chalkboard as a suitable replacement for a ten page menu? How could she

The speaker obviously belongs to a lower social class, in the way of income and her occupation. Much like the character in this poem, the speaker in “The Chimney Sweeper” by William Blake works long, hard hours as a chimneysweeper. These two characters are both related in their ways of life and their classes in our society.
Without the use of stereotypical behaviours or even language is known universally, the naming of certain places in, but not really known to, Australia in ‘Drifters’ and ‘Reverie of a Swimmer’ convoluted with the overall message of the poems. The story of ‘Drifters’ looks at a family that moves around so much, that they feel as though they don’t belong. By utilising metaphors of planting in a ‘“vegetable-patch”, Dawe is referring to the family making roots, or settling down somewhere, which the audience assumes doesn’t occur, as the “green tomatoes are picked by off the vine”. The idea of feeling secure and settling down can be applied to any country and isn’t a stereotypical Australian behaviour - unless it is, in fact, referring to the continental
Everyone feels alone at times, but the way we cope with it internally, is different. In Marie Howe’s poem Watching Television she starts by telling us about a mother spider who has a hundred babies, who were learning how to spin their webs. But, the poem switches and she starts talking about herself and how she imagines herself places where she is isolated. She explains that she is arguing with the man she loves, she hasn’t heard from him and she stands and waits for him to show up, but he never does. She finishes the poem with saying “Anything I’ve ever tried to keep by force I’ve lost,” which is a harsh ending.
Poetry and music both connections amongst each other, that make each other almost identical. Musicians use poetry to write their songs and sometimes write a poetic song first without the lyrics, then add music in it to finalize the song. Both are two different but the same style of literature. The poem “Promises like Pie-Crust” has two versions to it, the poem itself and the song version, but both are almost identical.
The poem “Always Something More Beautiful” by Stephen Dunn is certainly about running a race, but the speaker is also arguing that pursuing something beautiful can help guide us through life. Through the title, we can see that we should constantly look for more beautiful things in life. The poem begins with the speaker describing his experience before a race. He uses words like “best” and “love.” The tone is extremely enthusiastic. In the first line, he talks about coming to the starting place. This can be a metaphor for beginning our lifelong journey. The speaker also implies that we need to approach it with a positive attitude. In the next few lines, the speaker indicates being tested in excellence

Poverty is often taxing to one’s life in multiple ways, some of which include mind taxation, stress taxation, emotional taxation and of course money taxation. Mother Theresa once said “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty”. How would you find time to look for the one that would make you feel special and wanted, while having to live in situation which doesn’t forgive free time? “Night Waitress” by Linda Hull is poem that looks at daily life of a waitress who struggles to answer just that question.
The poet expresses a lot of emotion through the imagery that she uses. At the beginning of her poem, we can see a silent frustration, as we read: “do not fool yourself that I have fallen off the face of the earth and/am just another statistical write-off.” She shares how frustrating it is to be ostracized in a class where no one understands her, or makes any attempt to do so, and expresses this through smooth sarcasm. In the education system, Cree students were always expected to drop out, so it made no difference when or how many did drop out, because it was assumed they would all drop out eventually. They assumed that it was either because the Cree people didn’t care about their schooling, or didn’t have the mental capacity to learn, so as a result the staff also failed to care. This naturally, did not make it easy for the Cree students who did care, and who did try their best, and the speaker was also one of these people. She indicates that she is very annoyed with the education system because of all the stereotyping that was happening between students and teachers alike, but also because the classes are extremely boring to her, for she
Walter Martin, a Christian minister, once said, “A key to strengthening spiritual muscles and enduring hardship is finding strength in the Word of God.” Life in the American colonies was incredibly hard for early settlers, especially to combat sin and abuse from others. However, this fight against the struggles was made possible through the help from the Word of God. Life in the American colonies was harsh and challenging for settlers because the whites tried to be as holy as possible and the blacks were overexploited.
The most preeminent quality of Sonia Sanchez “Ballad” remains the tone of the poem, which paints a didactic image. Sanchez is trying to tell this young people that we know nix about love as well as she is told old for it. In an unclear setting, the poem depicts a nameless young women and Sanchez engaged in a conversation about love. This poem dramatizes the classic conflict between old and young. Every old person believes they know more then any young person, all based on the fact that they have been here longer then all of us. The narrative voice establishes a tone of a intellectual understanding of love unraveling to the young women, what she comprehends to love is in fact not.
Some people are born into this world without as many chances to get a better position in life. This can affect the people born into a lower class for the entirety of their life. In the poem “Saturday’s Child,” Countee Cullen uses imagery, personification, and similes to suggest the differences between people that are born into poverty and those that are born into an upper class part of society. Throughout this poem Cullen speaks about how the different social classes affect people; he does this with a pessimistic tone throughout the entirety of the poem.
In the world of teenagers everything seems to come and pass by so quickly. For instance the beginning of senior year. In Spite of being happy and excited were also generally nervous and anxious to see what our future holds. As senior year comes to an end, It then becomes as temporary as the summer sun but also the boundary of our life before we enter adulthood. Even then our future is still undefined.
As a senior I am obviously aware that my journey through school is coming to an end. At this point in my life, I have a slight idea about what I want to do in the future; however, I still do not know if that is what I want to do for the rest of my life and I will not ever know until I learn more about it. Some people may see my lack of permanent direction as an indication of someone who is lost. Nonetheless, I see this as an exhilarating experience where I am constantly discovering new things about myself. When this topic came up, I knew I wanted to do something that reflected my thought process during this time. A poem that I think best reflects me is titled innocence and is written by Linda K Hogan, a Native American poet who is of Chickasaw origin. Hogan has played a prominent role in the development of contemporary Native American poetry, in particular, its relationship to environmental issues. Innocence is a coming of age poem that effectively mirrors my attitudes, values and beliefs. This is seen through the ways in which the poem reflects my past, present and future.
The purpose of this essay is to analyze and compare and contrast the two paired poems “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning and “My Ex-Husband” by Gabriel Spera to find the similarities presented within the pairs. Despite the monumental time difference between “My Last Duchess” and “My Ex-Husband”, throughout both poems you will see that somebody is wronged by someone they thought was a respectable person and this all comes about by viewing a painting on the wall or picture on a shelf.
