“To the Virgins, Make Much of Time” Poem Analysis Essay "To the Virgins, Make Much of Time" is a lyric poem that at first reading seems to call young woman to enjoy life while they are young. Robert Herrick 's poem focuses on the idea of Carpe Diem, which roughly translates as seizing the day, Carpe Diem. William Penn 's words, "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst." The title of the poem begins to address the virgins (specifically). To "make much of time" is both to make something happen while time is passing and to pay attention to its passage. It is addressing the virgins. The poem stresses the idea of marriage while love and flesh are still young, or one may live a lonely and loveless life. Here, virgin is literally representing all those who are young and experience, yet to pursue love since they are new and naïve when it comes to love. He speaks of the virgins who are coy and advises them to take advantages of the opportunities that they can get. The young may think they might have a long life ahead of them, and all the time in the world but time waits for no one. Death is always on your doorstep and when it knocks, you have no other choice but to open it. Life is short, if one wastes it they will never get it back. Whether it's a list of things to do on the weekend or perhaps items of groceries which need to be picked up, her lust for each one of the boys in the story is about as well thought out and meaningful as each item which has carelessly and spontaneously been thrown on to a sheet of paper as is done in making a list. This symbolistic writing style is used to show how meaningless these relationships were, but the deeper meaning of why she acted the way she did is revealed throughout the story.

Sex is more than just a physical act. It's a beautiful way to express love. When people have sex just to fulfill a physical need, as the poet believes sex outside of love-based relationship only harms and cheapens sex. In the beginning of the poem, Olds brilliantly describe the beauty of sex, and then in the second half of the poem, she continues reference to the cold and aloneness which clearly shows her opinions about causal sex. The poem completes all of these aspects within just four stanzas which is quite impressive. All three of these aspects truly help readers understand the morals and details that the poem is trying to portray, and poets such as Roethke try to keep their audiences’ minds wondering why such and such occurs. The deeper meaning of poetry acts as if it is a mystery to be solved by the reader which keeps me interested and more aware of why certain things may make sense while I am reading. Some people are born into this world without as many chances to get a better position in life. This can affect the people born into a lower class for the entirety of their life. In the poem “Saturday’s Child,” Countee Cullen uses imagery, personification, and similes to suggest the differences between people that are born into poverty and those that are born into an upper class part of society. Throughout this poem Cullen speaks about how the different social classes affect people; he does this with a pessimistic tone throughout the entirety of the poem.

It seems to me as if he is just telling her what she wants to hear as long as he gets what he wants- which is to get into bed with her. The fallacy is even more apparent once line 20 ends because the mood switches immediately from “loving” to a grotesque, dark tone. The speaker goes on about how if she doesn’t lose her “long preserv’d virginity” to him, then the only way she will lose it is in her grave to the worms crawling inside her. How can that be a portrayal of love? The mere thought of that is absolutely grim. What it really does is negate all of the sweet, exaggerated things he mentioned in the first third of the poem.
