Are Pits Bulls good to have as pets?
When you hear Pit Bulls; what is the first thing that comes into your mind? Maybe, mean or just flat out dangerous dogs. Many people have Pit Bulls and say they are great dogs and that they are great family pets. Many still think they are not safe to have as pets and some states are even trying to ban the ownership of Pit Bulls. I believe that Pits are good family dogs and that people have the wrong idea about these dogs.
The first reason I believe that Pits are good as family pets is because they are very territorial and a protective breed of dog. The reasons Pits were used in the 19th century for dog fights were because of their high pain tolerance. This causes the dog’s to be able to fight to the point of exhausting themselves. This also is a great reason to have these dogs

because they will fight with all they have, even until death, to protect their family. In Lakewood Fla, a 5 year old girl was attacked by a Labrador. The little girl’s family Pit Bull came to her rescue and attacked the lab, letting the little girl escape in enough time. The owner of the Pit Bull says, “He’s like a hero. He is a protective. We taught him to be protective and caring for the family”(McRoberts, 2014). That also brings me to my next point; training the dogs. I you train these dogs right, they are a loving and caring dog. The second reason I think Pits are good family dogs is because of the fact of what they are used for and the truth about them.
One known thing about Pits are that they are called the nanny dogs because of their love for children. These dogs are also used for therapy dogs because they have excellent temperaments. They are used for rescue work and protecting work because of their higher pain tolerance and durability. One article about Pit Bulls states, “Dogs not breed or trained for dog fighting usually display defeat in combat by rolling over and exposing a light underside”(Gladwell, 2016). That shows submissiveness and understanding about who the top dog or owner is. This also proves that it’s how you train and treat your Pit Bull. If you raise your dog aggressively or even play with him aggressively, no doubt the dog will show later signs of aggressiveness. That goes for any dog. It also shows that you have to be careful. Some Pits have been raised fighting and that’s all they know. You must be kind and understand the history of your pet. But all in all, these are great dogs. In over 28 States, Pit Bulls are ranked favorite
dogs. Now even after that some still might not be convinced that these dogs are good family pets. A lot of people say the reason they are not safe is because of the death these people caused. That statement is so overused. So many different breeds of dogs have killed people. Not that it's a good thing, but you can just put all the attention on what Pit Bulls have done. Rottweilers are the second most deadly dog in the world. The only reason pits are first is because is the damage they can do. “47% out of 100% of human deaths because of dog attacks, is caused by Rotts”(DogBite.com, 2016). We rarely hear about those cases about that breed or even the other ones, it’s always Pit Bull as the killers. The Pit Bull name had been so overused and is always under rated. In conclusion, Pit Bulls are sae family dogs. You have the facts and the information. Its wrong to put these dogs in a category of killers or only good for their aggression. These dogs are like any other dog. They want attention and love. They also do exactly what the owners have trained them to do, even is that is be kind and loving, or aggressive and mean. It's all in how you raise them and see the truth about them. At the end of they day, they dogs just want a loving family.
Pitbulls should be allowed as pets. They are a symbol of pride. According to the text it states in paragraph three “Pit bulls became a symbol of American pride, and their image was used on posters to recruit soldiers during World War One.” This practically means that the pit bulls are someone that was in the armed forces which is a dog serving for us and helping the soldiers.
The reason why Pit Bulls are aggressive is because it’s their nature and that’s the way they’re born. Everyone that is afraid of Pit Bulls says it’s the dog's fault and that it's their nature to fight and kill, but honestly it’s the owners fault for making them that way. “‘Though Pit Bulls have strong jaws and, like most dogs will hold onto their prey after biting it. There is no evidence that a Pit Bulls jaw are anatomically different from those of other breeds’”(Lallanilla). They are more likely than any other breeds to grab a hold of something and shake it. The reason why
Pit bulls, like any other dog, grow into their temperament. The way the dog is raised rounds out their character and general temperament. According to the “American Temperament Test Society: Pit bulls pass temperament tests 84.1% of the time, which ranks them slightly better than golden retrievers (83.8%) and cocker spaniels (81.7%), and well above miniature schnauzers (78.6%),” (The Biting Truth). Myths have generated atrocious attitudes towards this breed for years. The nature of the dog to be a protector to children and the bulky build of pit bulls makes them a very easy breed to target. These opinions ...
The misrepresentation of Pit Bull breeds in the media has been reflected in American culture. As these dogs were incorporated into World War I propaganda, they were perceived as symbols of courage and strength, the archetype of American dog breeds5. When, in the 1920s and 1930s, American Staffordshire Terrier “Pete the Pup” starred in the comedy Our Gang, later known as The Little Rascals, Pit Bulls were considered “nanny dogs” and family-friendly pets7. When the media focused heavily on illegal dog fighting rings and gang culture in the 1970s and 1980s, Pit Bulls were called demonic and unpredictable. Through their many roles, they have shown versatility and resilience, and lately they have suffered greatly.
In conclusion, not all pit bulls are vicious. I mean they have their faults, but don’t all dogs? Pit bulls used to be well respected dogs some even heroes. If pit bulls are around a loving environment, trained correctly, and if the media would stop, pit bulls would make amazing pets. People don’t ever give them a chance to show how loving they actually are. So, next time you see a Pitbull, don’t jump to conclusions and think the worst because now we know you have nothing to
An increasing number of pit bull attacks have occurred over past decade. People who are attacked by pit bulls always suffer serious injuries because of the pit bulls’ sharp teeth and strong muscles. In October 19, 2009, Dr Hugh Wirth who is the RSPCA’s Victorian president renewed calls for American pit bull terriers to be bred out of Australia. The current laws require owners of pit bulls to register their pit bull. While some people are satisfied with the laws because they think that they are safe, others disagree. From my own perspective, the laws should be improved. The government should ban these fierce dogs and wipe them out instead of just registering them. In my opinion, there are three reasons why I am in favour of Dr Wirth’s proposal.
One reason people are so frightened of pitbulls is for their roles in street gangs. They are often used as what law enforcement has begun to deem, Are all pit bulls subjected to the life of gangs or forced into a fighting ring? No, but it is the dogs that are and have become violent because of their mistreatment that get in the media which leads to the public fearing all pit bulls.
To say “pit bull,” however, is a vague reference to several pit bull types, which are considered separate breeds by registries like the American Kennel Club (AKC). Each type has a slightly different breeding history; many began with the breeding of bulldogs with terriers to produce a loyal, compact and tenacious breed (“American Pit Bull Terrier”). The standard three pit bull types most often mentioned by name in breed-specific legislation include the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. That is not the extent of the legislation, however, which also includes dogs that “substantially conform to the breed standards established by the American Ken...
Thesis Statement: Pit bulls are like any breed of dogs that needs to be handled properly by their owners because they can be taught to be less aggressive and more loyal.
Owning a pit bull in today’s society people normally have one of two reactions: Either people love them or is frightened of them. There are many myths about pit bulls, which people confuse with the actual truth about this dog breed. A common myth about a pit bull is that they have locking jaws. However, people who fear pit bulls or have little knowledge about them base their opinion off of what others say. But, pit bulls do not have locking jaws, they have powerful muscles in their jaws that enable them to keep it closed an make people believe that it is locked up. Additionally, supporters of pit bulls know that these days are very powerful and have intimidating appearance, but these dogs are not “killer machines” as the media portrays them to be. Pit bulls are just like any other dog. It depends on how a pit bull or any dog is raised by their owner to determine the characteristics of the dog. I have raised my dog CoCo since she was a little puppy and she is just as sweet as she can be.
There are a lot of facts and information about pit bulls that the public does not know. The media blows things way out of proportion with this breed of dog and doing simple research can shed some light. “There are three main types of ‘pit bulls,’ they are the Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and American Staffordshire Terriers” (Pit Bull Rescue Center). The Staffordshire bull terrier is originally from England. When it was brought over to the states it was bred with other terriers and the American Staffordshire came to be. Often times people classify dogs that look a certain way as pit bulls, when in fact they are an entirely different breed or a mix of some sort.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. (Davis)
Even though pit bulls are the majority of dog attacks anybody hears about, they are loyal and caring dogs. All they want is the love and approval of their owners. They will do anything that they are told to do. Their strength, stamina, and speed fuel the passion they have for their owners. Pit bulls are not vicious by nature; they are good guard dogs fueled by the love for their family; and, they are definitely loyal friends. They have a lower temperament than many other well-known breeds; therefore, they are not vicious by nature at all. They are very strong guard dogs. Pit bulls are known to be a scary breed, so people stay away from them. They have an amazing amount of speed and stamina that they can use to chase predators away, too. Pit bulls are the best friends anyone could ask for. They are loyal and loving creatures that just want to please their family. They are good dogs to train to be around children. If the children are a part of the dog’s family, then the dog will protect the child at all costs. Pit bulls are a good breed to have as a family
If you were judged solely because of your race, how would you feel? The answer, most likely, is a negative one. Pit bulls, a breed of domestic dog, are victims of harsh stereotyping and unfair judgement. Many people believe the dog is naturally aggressive, but that is far from the truth. The breed does not matter, the size does not matter, and the age does not matter. The key factor on how a dog behaves, is, believe it or not, the person who raises it. Pit bulls are not a dangerous breed of dog.
It is the bad owners that give the pit bull a bad name. Contrary to that popular belief, dangerous animal behavior is the function of inherently dangerous dog owners, not inherently dangerous dogs. One fact that supports this is that pit bulls are the dogs most often shot during drug raids(TELLINGS v. Toledo). Besides the pit bulls that are owned by drug dealers for status symbols and protection, many pit bulls are owned by people that breed them for fighting. These poor dogs have a very slim chance of living a normal and happy life. This is not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners that should not have the dog, or should care for them better. The dogs that are forced to fight and are conditioned to defend themselves or die. When these dogs get loose, everything is a threat to them and they defend themselves in the name of survival. If golden retrievers were bred and raised with the sole purpose of fighting to the death, they would be just as dangerous as pit bulls. On the contrary, if all pit bulls were bred and treated as family dogs, they would have the same reputation as golden retrievers, if not better as the statistics found in the temperament test above
