New inventions in the medical field have always been coming out to provide a better life quality for many people but when the product is first being used on you it can be frightening. Nineteen years ago I was the first patient to use the PillCam which is a camera pill that goes through your digestive system and takes many pictures. I remember that day on how doubtful I was in using this product when fear shadowed over me and my heart started pounding. This left a mark in my life because not only did the PillCam helped me but I was the first step for many people to take to save their lives. When I got inside in the huge building many people walked gracefully in black suit attires in various directions. As I look around me I see crystal clear glass surrounding me delicately cleaned with a nice soft towel leaving no streaks in the glass. Awed at the view of the building a man in glasses with a beard comes up to me telling me that he’s my gastroenterologist and he escorts me to his office. When I arrived at the gastroenterologist’s office he ran through a series of tests trying to determine my problem eventually he told me that he can’t see what’s going on in my lower abdomen and no procedure can be used to look inside. However, he suggested me trying the new invention called the PillCam that would allow him to see inside my stomach by just drinking a pill. The idea seemed fascinating but at the same time petrifying because I would the first person to use it, however, I must know my problem because it might get worse in the future. I took the decision to take the camera pill, as I hold it delicately with my fingertips like if it was an atomic bomb I put it in my mouth with a cup of water and drank it. My company, Heraeus Medical Components, specializes in products for cardiac rhythm/heart failure management, so this was extra meaningful for me to not only see the leads, but also follow them to the sites of therapy within the heart. By convention, the field of healthcare research was entirely occupied by physicians and doctors. They were the ones who came up with new methods to treat diseases and get better results from diagnostic tests. Technology, on the other hand, was always looked at as a way to solve problems that we faced that didn’t pertain to the medical sector. It was employed to enhance the quality of life and make day to day work easier. But as technology progressed, so did the areas of application. The structural balancing techniques which were previously used to hold a building steady were now being used to develop near-perfect artificial joints and prosthetic limbs. Transparent polymers, developed to enhance robotic vision, were being suggested as a candidate for an artificial lens for the human eye. Before anyone could even understand what was happening, engineering had taken up the mantle to further medical technology to dizzying new heights.

Technology is important in our world today. Terry Tempest William’s “The Clan of One-breasted Women” is about women having breast cancer because of bomb testing from 1952- 1961 in Utah. In this case technology has a negative effect on the human race. On the other hand, “The Technology of Medicine” by Lewis Thomas is about money and the technology of medicine. There are three different levels of technology in medicine according to Thomas and they are “nontechnology,” “halfway technology” (582), and “technology of modern medicine” (583). It is obvious that technology benefits humankind with cures for diseases and prevention of sickness. Without technology, medicine would not be as advanced and there would not be as many medical procedures as there are today. By using technology, doctors have found out how to prevent certain diseases or viruses by immunizations. In fact, the human race needs to have technology to advance the medical field, as disclosed in Richard Selzer’s “Sarcophagus” about surgery, from the doctor’s point of view, showing all of the technology he uses during procedure. All these essays have examples on how technology benefits human kind. Therefore, technology is a friend of humankind, when used with restrictions, because it has made improvements in medicine and has proved its usefulness in hospitals.
