Living in a dangerous neighborhood can be alarming. Especially as young teenagers we are always told to not to talk to anyone in the street or to not be out too late. Parents are constantly reminding us to be safe but not everyone listens. Not listening to your parents can lead bad consequences. Speaking from experience, I got into a bad situation for not following what my parents told me about safety. Now I am more aware of my surroundings, but I still can not forget the day I learned my lesson.

Gentrification makes way for safe neighborhoods that were once considered to be unsafe because of crime. Areas such as Echo Park, East LA, and Bed-Stuy, once notorious for being some of the most dangerous places in the United States are now safer than ever because of the changes brought by gentrification. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, “…gentrification can cause an initial increase in crime because neighborhood change causes destabilization, although in the long run gentrification leads to a decline in crime as neighborhood cohesion increases.” (2016, HUD USER). The arrival of new members of the community and the changes they bring creates unrest in the form of crime.
It was the day of April 13, 2000. I woke up at exactly 12 o’clock because my boyfriend was to pick me up at 1 like we planned the night before. The day looked quite nice, but I was in a fowl mood. I got into a car accident the night before and had a huge argument with my parents about the car. I finally dragged myself into the shower and got ready in half an hour. The Wire portrays the daily lives of those living in the city of Baltimore, Maryland for what it is. The show does not hide any details of the true issues people face living in this area. The Wire depicts three central themes surrounding urban areas: the drug trade, organizational dysfunction, and the role of the media influencing public views. These three themes can be seen throughout the television show as well as while viewing race and crime as a whole.

This old/new bus continued our route, and we all sat quietly, awaiting our stops. Everyone had a tired, almost forlorn look, as though they had been through much more than just switching buses. The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees.
