The two religions of Islam and christianity are different Islam is a religion of works and christianity of grace. This means pilgrimages and holy places must be visited by Muslims once in their life in the christian faith it is optional. There are three main characteristics that you should know about pilgrimages for these religions Muslims must make one pilgrimages in their life to Mecca. The christian faith makes pilgrimages optional, Pilgrimages don’t save you but can make your faith life stronger.
In the Muslims religion the followers of Allah are required to make one pilgrimages in their life to Mecca. The Muslim believers make their pilgrimage to mecca. A pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and
Going on a pilgrimage is a good thing for any adherent to go on because a pilgrimage can make you feel closer to god it also helps you to understand and see things that when you read the bible or quran you don’t really understand. A pilgrimage is a journey undertaken for a sacred purpose one goes on pilgrimage in order to find favour with God and to merit or earn blessings ("Why Is Pilgrimage so Important to Christians." Religion Answers. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015). The Pilgrimage also alls you talk to God with all the distraction of life and find his purpose for you. I think this is why many christian still choose to go on Pilgrimages even though they are optional in there faith. The Pilgrimages are a great way to connect with God and learn about your religion and your
It also means you will need to take time off work time away for family. They don’t There are a lot of reasons why many people don’t go on pilgrimages but A pilgrimage doesn’t necessarily require expensive and time-consuming trips overseas.("Why Go On Pilgrimage." The Faithful Traveler. N.p., 01 Mar. 2009. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.). A traveling pilgrim deeply connects and explores the cultures they visit in the same way a spiritual tourist explores life's meaning and significance. In this way, spiritual pilgrims are made unique by their desire to find life purpose. As Falson's life begins to fall apart, he finds new life purpose through the study of St. Francis's Christ-like lifestyle of poverty and generosity. A reader can especially make this connection as Falson washes the genitals of a poor man and the impact it makes on him. Pilgrims studying history search for the purposes and deeper implications of each past event. They seek not just to know the facts but also their deeper
Furthermore, to display their piety, most medieval people became nuns and popes. Many medieval people set sail and went on pilgrimages. Thus, by becoming nuns, monks, and pilgrims many displayed piety differently even through religion, literature, architecture, art, thought, and practices.
Religion was the back-bone for the pilgrimage. Saying so, this allows one to ponder the argument that the United States is in existence today due to religion. I agree with Patricia Bonomi’s argument that the colonies transferred the importance from that of the group to that of the individual. This enabled each and every colonist. They were not only working for the whole but themselves now. Importance was placed upon the individual and self-reliance, by means of spirituality, was becoming more the common place. A type of individual freedom took place which ...
Late in the fifth century the son of a well-off family in Italy left for isolation on his mission to truly seek god. This man was St. Benedict, who is credited with the first establishment of the concept of withdrawing from all temptation for Christian beliefs in the west. St. Benedict left his home and went to the top of a mountain, where he established a monastic community. In this community the individuals who resided there, constantly reiterated their faith. They sacrificed whatever they may have had to prove their true commitment to God. This became an early ideal of Christianity, that one must suffer loss and sacrifice to prove their loyalty to the faith. It was believed in this time period that if one is content with only what they truly need one is freer to think about other people and to think about God . These individuals were called Regular Clergies (monks) and were considered heroes of the faith.
During this time, Mecca was mostly populated with polytheistic followers. In 610 C.E, Prophet Muhammad, had his first revelations that advance the Islamic culture. His revelations became a way of life for his followers. When the religion started rising in numbers, Muhammad and his followers was exiled from Mecca. When the followers migrated to Medina, Islam began to spread. This religion had much influence in the locations it was practiced in. The Quran is the way of life to its people. The five pillars expressed in the Quran were the religious laws Muslims were expected to follow. They were expected to only accept there is one God and one messenger, Muhammad, pray five times a day, give the poor 2.5 percent of their savings, fast during the month of Ramandan, and pilgrimage to Mecca, where the Holy Ka’ba is located. Besides the religious impact, Muhammad also created a political empire. He united different tribes and customs. Muhammad was very influential that after his death, the religion faced a challenge. They did not have a successor or leader, so many followers left the religion, refused to pay taxes, and wars begun. In the mid- seventh century, the Muslims started wars with the Byzantine and Persian Empires and conquered them. Muslims ruled over many religious groups including Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians. As the Muslims became powerful, they created laws that taxed other religious groups to practice their faith. In the “Pact of Umar”, Christians agreed under extreme circumstances in order to practice their faith. They agreed to not fix the damages done to their churches, to not display any religious ornaments, to not spread the faith, and many more. The Muslims conquered and progressed in
When people think about Mecca one of the first things that might come to their heads is the pilgrimage or the black stone. Muhammad is one of the reasons that Mecca is what it is today. Muhhamad was a prophet born 570 in Mecca. He was orphaned as a child and sent to ended up living with his uncle. Muhhamad would get away from everything by going to the desert to meditate. One night while alone at Mt. Hira he was visited by an angel named Gabriel. After this Muhhamad began to accept Allah and started to believe. Some of the things Muhhamad believed was Jihad, holy struggle. He also began to believe you live for Allah. He believed all those who did would be rewarded and the rest punished. Not everyone believed the way Muhammad did. People at first thought that his teachings were a threat to the religious and material order. He was accused of making up what the Angel Gabriel had told him. He got followers from the poor and people who thought they were being unequally treated. Muhhamad took these people and then left and went to Medina to find more followers. He then returned to Mecca later and took over the city and converted everyone to Islam.
...e by having a feast. Finally the last pillar requires a pilgrimage to Mecca. This pilgrimage is called a Hajj and each Muslim is required to make this journey once in a life time. Each year two million people make this trip. (Molloy 443) Like Buddhism Islam has broken into branches, the two major branches are Sunni and the Shiites Although all Muslims are supposed to get along Sunnis and Shiites often disagree on weather a leadership of Islam should be political or religious.
Islam and Christianity have a vast amount of similarities as well as differences. Islam searches for guidance from the Qur’an and Christianity depends on faith in Jesus. Islamic faith believes in the God, Allah. Above anything else, all religious Muslims obey Allah and his commandments to obtain peace. On other hand, Christianity puts faith in Jesus who is the son of God. A major concept that separates both of the religions is the fact that the God of each faith has different qualities. This means Islam and Christianity don’t worship the same God. Islam and Christianity are two separate belief systems in which two separate Gods exist.
People who practice monasticism abandon worldly pursuits to dedicate their lives to God and to spiritual works. These people seclude themselves from the outside world. They do not care for radio, television, digital electronics, smart phones, going out, going to the movies, dancing and all the fun activities we love to do.
Motives for Pilgrimage Many questions are raised when flipping through the history of the religion of Christianity. Why did Christians fight so long against Pagan rulers? Why did their religion mean so much to them, they would risk their lives for it? Maybe by narrowing the questions down, possible answers can be developed.
When it comes to traveling to a familiar place, they are not always going to be so familiar. There is something about unfamiliarities in a familiar place that is refreshing and gives you a break from the monotony of most of your routines. In Peter Jon Lindberg's "Summerland", he talks about a vacation spot in Maine that he brings his family every year. He explains how the only thing that stays familiar year after year is the cottage in which they reside. "Constancy is the most underrated of virtues, in people but also in places." This quote by Lindberg perfectly describes this theme. No matter how many times you go to a destination in your lifetime, each experience and even the place itself will be different. Although it is not quite the same each time, there is a sense of comfort in returning to that family vacation spot. This is proven by Lindberg's statement, "What I've awoken to since is the soul-affirming joy of returning. Going back, it turns out, does not mean retreat. A ritual is not a rut." While most people travel to get away from the familiar it is refreshing to
No matter where they are, if it is time to pray, they will stop and pray to their god or goddess whether it is to their personal god or goddess or their village or town’s god or goddess. This is a lifestyle that they are required to live in order to be reincarnated to a good or better life than before. Even though it is strict, one must make it their own. If one would like to be reincarnated to a better life, then they should dedicate themselves fully, if they are fine with the way they live then they must keep up what they are doing, if they are not happy with their life then they need to increase what they are doing and take their faith to the next level and fully dedicate themselves. They have rights and choices. It is what they do with them that
Traveling alone has been proven to have more benefits for a person and it cuts costs by over half the price of traveling with a family or in a group. Most people think that traveling independently is frightening and dangerous so they opt out of doing it that way. In reality it’s not as bad as it’s perceived to be. “Traveling alone is no different than traveling in a group, there will always be people and safety resources out there to aid a person in danger “(Fordham). That idea is clear when it comes to populated dense places. There are many resources out in the world that can help or protect a person when needed. Just by studying up on the places that are going to be traveled is a smart way to be prepared. It also forces individuals to be smarter when it comes to where they are trekking and where to go with more precaution.
There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work.
