Physical Discipline What is it: Physical discipline is a form of punishment that inflicts pain, usually on a child, and is exercised by a parent or someone of legal authority. The purpose of physical discipline is to stop the negative behavior or undesired acts present in a child. Corporal Punishment in School in Canada In the past, the act of corporal punishment was used as a discipline technique in many schools all over Canada. Both sides each have valid arguments that one could consider. Those who support physical discipline say that the unwanted behavior is stopped immediately when enforced. The child’s response is much quicker. The kid would no longer desire to misbehave because they don’t want to get hit again. Supporters of physical discipline also argue that parents do not have to exhaust themselves in getting their point across. When you spank a child for misbehaving, they will understand right away that their behaviour is unacceptable. It is also a simpler concept for children to grasp. The kid will know that they get hit when they do something bad. This fastens the process of the kid recognizing their inappropriate behaviour. Parents are able to assert their authority better with physical discipline. The child would respect their parents more and are less likely to disobey their rules. Nevertheless, the debate as to whether physical discipline is appropriate and effective remains. Many argue that it only leads to violence, while others agree on its usefulness.
