Philosophy - The Dialectical Method
There are a lot many descriptions for the word dialectic. By viewing all of them what I have ended up concluding in the given context, i.e. Socrates’ Dialectical Method, is that:
Dialectic is a variety of languages, conceivably a sort of a composition of the languages in this variety. The word comes from Ancient Greek dialektos, which is derived from dialegesthai, meaning to discourse, converse, and talk.
By this root of the word, in this context, I deduce that Dialectics is a method in which people from different walks of life, contained by different personal philosophies (languages) are set together to discuss on a single word, sentence, thought, topic etc.
explaining their personal views supported by logical reasons defending their argument.
This discussion is meant to have all the possible view points on that particular subject with in a group of people and finally to deduce a definition for the subject which is acceptable by all the individuals involved. The ultimate goal for having Dialectic seems to search for the real the truth.
Socratic Dialectical Method
Well for this I think first we should know what nature Socrates had, it will help us knowing the uniqueness of Socrates’ method.
Socrates was a man of the Periclean age, which witnessed one of the
periodic “bankruptcies of science.” Cosmological speculation, which had been boldly pursued from the beginning of the 6th century, seemed to have led to a chaos of conflicting systems of thought. People had turned away from pursue of science and concentrated themselves not with truth but with making a successful human life. In this time of chaos and individualism, Socrates was the most realistic person in sight. He was always searching for more than the meanings of things already had. He wanted proof of what was defined, proof which would give logical reasons for it self. He was ‘an inquirer’, unsatisfied and still looking for truth. Unlike others he was not self-centered, always ready to be corrected. His nature of being broad minded reflected his way of teaching people, which actually seems to be learning by them. This is the beauty of his method, called as The Socratic Dialectical Method.
Procedure
Socrates did not call people towards him self, he went out towards them and asked them their views instead of lecturing and forcing his thoughts on them. It was a dialogue form discussion, where individuals brought up their view points on a particular subject set by Socrates.

In the movie Hancock, The protagonist Hancock has a very special gift he possesses super powers almost like those of superman. At the beginning of the movie Hancock is shown as a drunk who only decides to do good when he feels like it. Throughout the movie Hancock becomes a positive role model who does nothing but good. During the movie there is a scene where a woman’s purse is snatched, Hancock watches this happen and his exact words are “what do I care for.” Later in the movie Hancock is fighting to save the city he now loves and happily calls home. Hancock goes from not caring at all to caring more than any other citizen. Hancock changes from a drunk who could help the world but chooses not to, into a hero who is willing to lose his life fighting to do what is right. While trying to complete his journey he meets a mentor, makes enemies, faces a test, and even receives a the approval of the city. All these are elements of his journey.
It takes one person to begin expanding a thought, eventually dilating over a city, gaining power through perceived power. This is why Socrates would be able to eventually benefit everyone, those indifferent to philosophy, criminals, and even those who do not like him. Socrates, through his knowledge of self, was able to understand others. He was emotionally intelligent, and this enabled him to live as a “gadfly,” speaking out of curiosity and asking honest questions. For someone who possesses this emotional intelligence, a conversation with Socrates should not have been an issue-people such as Crito, Nicostratus, and Plato who he calls out during his speech.

The first of the laws passed in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party was the Boston Port Act, closed the port of Boston until the colonists paid for the destroyed tea. The colonists pointed that this act should only aim to the group of people who had destroyed the tea rather than all of Boston, and they objected that the government did not give the opportunity for those people to do their own defense. The Massachusetts Government Act effectively abrogated the Massachusetts Charter of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, almost all positions in the colonial government were to be appointed by the parliament or the king, it also limited the town meeting, people can not hold a meeting unless the governor called for one. This act brought Massachusetts under control of the Britain. The Administration of Justice Act, also called Murder Act, allowed the Royal governor to appoint a place within the empire for the trials of accused royal officials, if the governor thinks the officials could not get a fair trial in massachusetts. The Quartering Act applied to all of the colonies, the American colonists was required to provide housing and food for the British soldiers. The Boston Tea Party was an important historical event that happened on the night of December 16th, 1773. This was a predicament that was between the British government and the American colonies. The number one priority of it dealt with taxes, which Britain was requiring American colonies to pay. In 1765, the Stamp Act was created by Parliament to provide money to make peach with the Native Americans and the American settlers. It was an act that was loathed by the colonists of America, and was repealed by parliament for many reasons. The government of Britain created other laws to maintain all the problems that were being forced upon; which later, the Boston Tea Part was focused on the Parliamentary Law. Americans were very up to date when it came to financial demands by the British Parliament. They were not blind sighted by the whole thing and just did what British said. In 1765, an organization that was kept on the down level, called the Sons and Daughters of Liberty was created for the British to boycott their products. With the start of 1773, assemblies of Massachusetts and Virginia had created the Committees of Correspondence, which was a group that was directed to communicate to any threats that was being shown by any of the American colonies. With that being said, parliament passed the Tea Act, which had a big part in the Boston Tea Party. The Tea Act allowed East Indian Company to undersell colonial tea merchants in American Market. It was the start of something new.

These four acts joined together and formed the Intolerable Acts. The first act was the Boston Port Act. The purpose of the Boston Port Act was to close the ports. “The Boston Port Act closed the harbor until the colonists paid for the tea” (Hicks, Graves, Kerwin, Stewart 81). The ports remain closed as a way of punishment. Paying for the tea was the whole punishment. The first act should have been the end of the punishment but, it wasn’t. Later on, the Massachusetts Government Act and the Administration of Justice Act started. “The intention of the Massachusetts Government Act was to suspend effectively the right of self-government in the Massachusetts colony and revoke the colony's 1691 charter,” also “The purpose of the Administration of Justice Act of the Intolerable Acts allowed the Governor to send rebellious colonists for trial in other colonies or in Great Britain.” These two acts took away power from the colonists in their own colony and in the government. Parliament was trying to take over, and this led up to more tension. () The final act was the Quartering Act of 1774. The Quartering Act of 1774 was a revised version of the previous quartering act. “A revised quartering act allowed British soldiers to be housed privately owned buildings. The New Deal, established by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, was a series of programs put into affect to fix the Great Depression that the United States was currently in. Beginning with the crash of the stock market on October 29, 1929, America was plunged into its most severe economic downturn yet. Roosevelt developed this plan to save the country. At this time the people of America were in a huge economic unrest. Most in America were homeless or unemployed. Roosevelt created his programs to help these exact people from poverty. He assured the people of America that his programs would help the crumbling economy, mass unemployment, and low wages. This chain of programs raised both nationalism and national character throughout America for a few years. The author of this excerpt had a very negative view of FDR’s work and critiqued every program within the New Deal. Roosevelt’s programs have many long-term consequences, some of which are still in effect today. Most of the programs still in action were modified in the 1960’s, these are the present day welfare programs that most people are accustomed to. While the New Deal was not entirely successful, Franklin D. Roosevelt did the best he could with the time and circumstances given.
Franklin Roosevelt’s “optimism and activism that helped restore the badly shaken confidence of the nation” (pg. 467 Out of Many), was addressed in the New Deal, developed to bring about reform to the American standard of living and its low economy. It did not only make an impact during the Great Depression. Although, many of the problems addressed in the New Deal might have been solved, those with the long lasting effect provide enough evidence to illustrate how great a success the role of the New Deal played out in America’s history to make it what it is today.
Socrates was a Greek philosopher who lived from 469-399 B.C.E. Socrates believed that Philosophy was primarily a social activity, which in fact he made use of quite often. He would find himself roaming the streets of Athens questioning the youth or just anyone who would give him the chance to talk to them. Furthermore, Socrates questions drove people absolutely insane, until the point of absolute consternation if you will. He tried proving a point which is quoted “Look, here we are, two ignorant men, yet two, men who desire to know. I am willing to pursue the question seriously if you are” (Palmer, 31).Ultimately, this meant that the person Socrates was questioning actually didn’t know anything at all, just as well as Socrates himself, so which for the both of them would remain in search of the truth.
