Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) was created to screen for disease, although more recently it is being used in choosing the sex of one’s child. PGD should be legal as long as the welfare of the participants remain a priority in regards to safety. I am not against the use of PGD to avoid health risks. A child should not be born to into this world without the opportunity to live a happy health life, free of ridicule, medications, pain and suffering. Dr. Arthur Caplan, director of the Center of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, states that there should be laws in place regarding PGD and that couples should be counseled prior to receiving the procedure to determine the importance of such method (CBS News, 2009). I do agree with his statement because emotions can often blur our understanding of situations. What do you think about people that use it to select the sex of their baby? I do not feel I have the right to judge others based on their needs and wants; however, I do not find PGD for the use of gender selection to be appealing. I am of the mindset that you should let nature takes it course. First, it is an expensive procedure. As stated by Dr. Arthur Caplan, only the rich would benefit, the poor would not be able to participate (CBS News, 2009). Second, although PGD can reduce the risk of conceiving a child with a health risk, it can also manifest false expectations for both parents and the child. For example, if a child is born without the initial wants and needs of the parents request, how would the parents react towards the child. It is possible they may be disappointed and angry (CBS News, 2009).
