Additionally, a hen in the wild will naturally lay 10 to 15 eggs per year, with genetic engineering the hens can produce 250 to 300 eggs per year. The dismal life of a dairy cow is typically decreased by 15 years of its natural 20-year lifespan; inseminated after its first year, a cow will produce milk for 10 months before it’s inseminated again to repeat the cycle. Children being raised as herbivores are faced with obstacles of their own, being around others who eat meat can be confusing and frustrating. Curious about why their family doesn’t eat meat, there will be questions; likely it will become a daily conversation topic for little ones around ages 4 to 8. Be honest! Secondly it helps lower the risk of death. A 2013 study showed that more than 70,000 people found that vegetarians had a twelve percent lower risk of death compared with non-vegetarians (Alexandra p.2) With the absence of the saturated fat and cholesterol that clogs arteries, vegetarians are at a lower risk for chronic disease overall. Thirdly, when being a vegetarian you are also in a better mood. “ A 2012 study randomly split participants into three diets: all-meat allowed, fish-only and vegetarian no-meat. The researchers found that after two weeks, the people on the vegetarian diet reported more mood improvements than those on the other two diets.”(Alexandra p.3). The vegetarian diet has become very popular in the United States. How does not eating meat affect a person's health? It is important for people to eat a nutritious diet that will fuel their body. Some people think the vegetarian diet is bad for a person because there are so many nutrients that we can only get from meat.The vegetarian diet has a stigma that it is not very healthy, however the vegetarian diet can be very beneficial to a person's health.
However, a child raised on a vegan diet can prove to be just as healthy as a child raised on a standard diet. As true with any diet, an unbalanced vegan diet lacking in necessary vitamins and minerals or having excess fat can lead to an unhealthy child and because children have smaller appetites and with the range of food available to eat already limited it might be hard to find food they will eat (Mann). This makes raising a child on a vegan diet a little more difficult than raising a child on a standard diet but not impossible. “Many dieticians believe it is possible to bring up a healthy vegan child [but] ... ‘you do have to make sure you know what you are doing.’(Mann).” With a vegan diet that is, on its own, restrictive a parent just has to ensure that their child is getting everything they need just like an adult on a vegan diet. Children have more nutritional requirements to ensure that they get enough of what they need you just have to plan each meal. Nut butters are extremely rich in protein and many grains are calcium fortified. There are also meat substitutes made of beans, soy, and vegetables that can appeal to children and are full of many of the vitamins a vegan could need. For me, the decision to remove meat from my diet stemmed solely from the belief that humans have no right to eat any living creature — period. In short, I believe all lives have equal value, even if they’re a non-human animal. An offshoot from this, which also helped fuel my vegetarianism, includes the horrendous treatment animals endure for the sake of consumption.
