Vegetarianism is good for your health and the environment

Addressing Meat Eaters:
Eating meat; it’s your way of life, it’s what you’ve always known. Let’s face it, when the food is one your plate, your mind is focused on how scrumptious it will be. What if I told you that eliminating meat from your diet will actually enhance your life? Quality and longevity, and your vegetarian friends want you to be around as long as they will be! That’s right, eating a diet void of meat has a lower mortality risk. It has been shown that people who live a vegetarian lifestyle tend to have a lower BMI, something desirable to many of us. Studies have shown that raising livestock actually produces more greenhouse gases than the emissions given off by the total number of cars in the world! In 2001 there was 229 million tons of meat produced globally, it is projected that by 2050 that number will rise to 465 million tons. Equally important, is the deplorable and heartbreaking conditions that the animals are being forced to live in. Please keep in mind that animal products such as milk and eggs are not without cruelty. Per animalethics.org, annually there are over six billion male chicks killed just after hatching, since they do not lay eggs they are disposed of. Additionally, a hen in the wild will naturally lay 10 to 15 eggs per year, with genetic engineering the hens can produce 250 to 300 eggs per year. The dismal life of a dairy cow is typically decreased by 15 years of its natural 20-year lifespan; inseminated after its first year, a cow will produce milk for 10 months before it’s inseminated again to repeat the cycle. Please remember to stay strong, you are not alone! There are 22.8 million vegetarians in the United States. Children being raised as herbivores are faced with obstacles of their own, being around others who eat meat can be confusing and frustrating. Curious about why their family doesn’t eat meat, there will be questions; likely it will become a daily conversation topic for little ones around ages 4 to 8. Be honest! I recommend reading books like That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals by Ruby Roth. Share your thoughts with your kids, but also listen to theirs and be responsive to their wishes. People should be free to make their own
