Yep, I’m sure you’ve guessed it by now, but if you haven’t, I’m talking about Cannabis. You know; marijuana, Mary Jane, weed, pot, and ganja. Whatever you prefer to call it, it is a huge topic of the decade. We as Americans have taken a huge interest in the plant and whether or not it is medicinal. There is scientific evidence of marijuana being medicinal. The only dilemma with medicinal marijuana is that it’s not always the most effective and usually the effects only last for a short period of time. We see this in many different diseases and disorders such as cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. We also see that marijuana is helpful towards …show more content…
Epilepsy is a disease that causes uncontrollable seizures. Scientists have been doing studies on the effects marijuana has on the seizures caused by epilepsy. “The positive results that some people with epilepsy have been seeing from CBD-rich marijuana extracts are giving so many parents what they have been lacking for so long – hope.” A quote from a website called CURE Epilepsy brings emotion and great news. Basically, scientists have conducted experiments with cannabidiol (CBD). That make an extract that’s mainly filled with CBD. CBD is the major NON-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Since it has been yet to be clinically evaluated, physicians are very quick to warn patients of the danger of it. From WebMD, they give more information on a study. The study was led by Dr. Orrin Devinsky. They claimed that there were two hundred thirteen patients with twelve different types of epilepsy. One hundred thirty-seven patients actually completed the twelve week trial. The number of seizures seemed to have fell fifty-four percent. Out of the patients that completed the study, twenty-three of the patients had Dravet syndrome and eleven had Lennox-Gastaut syndrome which are very severe types of epilepsy. The Dravet syndrome patients’ convulsion seizures fell by fifty-three percent. The Lennox-Gastaut syndrome patients’ atonic (cause sudden loss of muscle tone) seizures dropped fifty-five percent. …show more content…
According to a website called EyeSmart, glaucoma is an eye condition. It is caused by optic nerve damage. It can reduce side vision and can sometimes lead to blindness. It is very well known for the eye to have increased intraocular pressure (IOP). The only way to help glaucoma and stop vision loss is to lower the IOP levels. Marijuana has been known to do this. It usually lowers levels from twenty percent to thirty percent. It has been found to lower the IOP pressure up to fifty percent, on a rarer occasion. Marijuana treatment ideas for glaucoma have dated back to the 1970s. There is a drawback to this treatment though. Marijuana only lowers the IOP pressure for about three to four hours. According to the site, glaucoma needs to be treated twenty-four hours a day. This would mean you would have to smoke cannabis anywhere from six to eight times a day to benefit the IOP pressure. On the American Glaucoma Society’s website, it states more setbacks like “…Marijuana’s mood altering effects would prevent the patient who is using it from driving, operating heavy machinery, and functioning at maximum mental capacity.” Though it is not the most ideal treatment, marijuana is still very effective in this

Legalization of marijuana in the United States has received much attention and controversy in recent months. The federal government outlaws the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, despite proven research studies that have discovered the plant’s potential to treat the lives of many Americans affected by disease and chronic pain. Medicinal use of the marijuana plant dates back to 2700 B.C. in China. Emperor Shen Nung discovered its’ healing properties and recommended marijuana for a variety of ailments (Mack and Joy 14). Today, bias views and laws plague the advancement of marijuana in present day medicine.

The Physiological Effects of Marijuana Marijuana derives from the dried leaves and flower of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa; for thousands of years, physicians regarded marijuana as a useful pharmaceutical agent that could be used to treat a number of different disorders. In the 19th century, physicians in the United States and Europe used marijuana as an analgesic, as a treatment for migraine headaches, and as an anticonvulsant (Grinspoon & Bakalar, 1993, 1995). In 1938, a physician used marijuana (hashish) to completely control the terror and excitement of a patient who had contracted rabies (Elliot, 1992, p. 600).

Cannabis, more commonly known as marijuana, is a plant that people have been using recreationally for years. In fact, people have consumed marijuana since ancient times. Until 1906, the year the United States Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act. The debate on whether or not marijuana should be legalized in the United States has really blown up within the last decade. And finally, in 2012, Colorado became the first state to officially legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational uses. The prohibition of marijuana has gone on for far too long, and it is time for America to change its views.
There is a therapeutic value in cannabis, it helps all kinds of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and insomnia. With depression and anxiety, in low doses, the relaxation can help take over worried thoughts and allow the mind to act normally. A warning is that in high doses, it can lead to more dangerous thoughts and even paranoia. Cannabis can act as an antidepressant and sedative and can change that person 's mood into happier more positive thoughts. Insomnia is the problem with the mind calming down enough for sleep, but Cannabis can relax the mind and soon enough sleep will follow. Charlotte Figi is a case of a mental illness that was easily taken care of with Cannabis. Charlotte started having seizures soon after birth, having around 300 a week. Despite being on 7 medications, medical marijuana was able to calm her brain limiting her seizures to 2 or 3 a
The controversy dealing with marijuana stems from the legalization of the drug for medical use.
In America, marijuana is the most used drug after alcohol and tobacco. Marijuana is used by millions of Americans, despite the harsh laws illegalizing the drug. Some states, such as Washington and Colorado have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Efforts to legalize the drug in other states have been unsuccessful such as Proposition 19 in California, which failed in 2010 despite uptight campaigns. Billions of dollars are spent at the state, local, and federal level to fight the use of marijuana. Millions are arrested for marijuana offenses and sentenced for extended periods. Marijuana has negative effects on the human health and high potential for addiction. Legalizing marijuana will eliminate the black market, which is responsible for the increase in violence, crime, and corruption. Resources used for mass incarceration in the war on drug can be redirected to rehabilitation to decrease drug abuse and addiction.
Marijuana is a very hot topic and also brings a lot of controversy among the topics in the U.S today. Many believe it has medicinal benefits and should be made legal when necessary. Many believe it has a really high risk for abuse. Amongst those arguments, some of the ingredience in medical marijuana have presented a greater argument for possible legalization through their use of research and evidence of beneficial use
...ause of the psychoactive ingredient THC can cause paranoia and seizures. The CBD in marijuana may have many medical benefits but until more dispensaries reduce the amount of THC, it is still questionable weather some patients should use marijuana as a medicine. Marijuana can cause damage to premature developing brains and should be tested in a lab before giving to children.
To the AIDS or cancer patient, marijuana is the plant that fights nausea and appetite loss. To the nutritionist, its seed is second only to the soybean in nutritional value and is a source of cooking oil and vitamins. To the paper or cloth manufacturer, it is the plant that provided much of our paper and clothing for hundreds of years and produces four times more fiber per acre than trees. To the environmentalist, it is the plant that could greatly slow deforestation, restore robbed nutrients by other crops, and help prevent erosion. Preliminary findings show the drug may prove effective against glaucoma and asthma, and control such side nausea in cancer treatment. I concretely believe that marijuana should be legalized in the United States, primarily for the use of medicinal purposes. In technical or for the average American, marijuana, it is used only for recreational purposes. I think marijuana is a plant that could save many lives if it was made legal. My goal is to reverse prejudices, relieve ignorance, and inform people of the known and potential therapeutic uses of this remarkable plant.
In the world today, there are so many different types of drugs that are covered in the substance use and abuse chapter. People abused substance due to many reasons such as curiosity, peer pressure, etc. If I had to choose one type of drug to cover in my classroom, I would talk about marijuana because it is a widely used drug in the world today and I think it would be a good idea to inform people about the consequences they could face when abusing the substance. Additionally, I would discuss about the positive effects that marijuana could bring into the medical field because marijuana is not a bad substance when you know how to use it in a correct way. In my opinion, the age group that is the most important to cover with are between middle school
