Kids today are in a constant struggle with everything from physical and emotional norms to social and economic stability. When they step out to face the day ahead the last they should have to endure is being defined by the attire in which they wear. The simple task of getting up and getting dressed to pursue their education has now become a war of the roses. The walk or ride to the school house, for some, have now become the epitome of darkness and shame. Instead of an institute for learning the school house has now become a chamber for torture. There has been a strong controversy on whether or not it is a good idea for students to have to wear uniforms in school. I feel that there are various benefits for both the child and the parents when …show more content…
The quality of most uniforms are very durable and designed to last; parents save on that alone because it cuts down on the frequency of having to buy new apparel. There is also tax deduction for the purchase or uniforms and supplies, so any money spent will be recycled back at the end of the year. When it comes to the ability and the element of choice students still have those rights while wearing uniforms; some schools have a variety of colors as well as styles acceptable to wear. Individuality is something that is unique to the person not the clothing he or she wears, therefore it does not matter if you dress like anyone else you still have your own identity as an individual. The way you wear your hair or accessorize your garments are both a form of expression, so wearing a uniform to school does not strip the student of their right. Students are also still able to show support to a social cause by doing so with their backpack, notebook, pen, pencils, and any other school supply. …show more content…
It has more a positive impact on the students by creating a picture of an equal economical balance and status among peers. The fact that all the students are wearing the same thing will not only increase safety and cut down on bullying, but it will also dismember the feelings of shame and peer pressure, while promoting unity within the school. The argument suggests that it takes away the student’s right to make decisions, be an individual, and freedom of speech or expression, but it is more like a challenging them than taking away. Uniforms push the students to think outside of the box to find other creative ways of standing out as an individual, and explore other forms of self-expression. Creating an environment that students feel confident and free of judgements will not only enhance their overall academic achievement, but it gives them a platform for opportunity and redefine their social
High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.
Uniforms in public schools are becoming more and more accepted around the world. “Over the last two decades, the debate over the implementation of school uniform policies in public schools has been a consistent presence in schools and districts around the United States.” (Sanchez, 345). Teachers, parents and school administrators feel the need for school uniforms as a positive way to increase school safety and increase academic performance. Even though school uniforms are not the most popular choice among students and parents, the positive impact school uniforms make on students and the school outweigh the negative opinions.
School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.
School uniforms should be part of the school systems, because statistics had shown that students who wear uniforms are doing better than dress codes. More students also feel a sense of equality among each other and there are fewer judgments of others. It allows teacher quickly to identify people who do not belong in the building and limit the ways that gangs can identify themselves. School outfit provides students identity, individual spirit, and pride. Uniforms are increasing throughout different schools. School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students be more confident of what they can achieve in life.
To begin, school uniforms are economic. When schools have a uniform policy, it makes it easier on the children and parents. It is convenient because a child can just go to their closet and pick out a uniform and be ready for school. It is also very cost effective. Parents can outfit their children twice a year, warm and cold weather uniforms, rather than spending hundreds of dollars trying to keep up with expensive, name-brand clothing. In addition to being economically beneficial, school uniforms also help reduce distractions in the classroom.
The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self-expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but students can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice with their hair and what accessories they wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Students can make the uniforms their own style without breaking the dress code. School is a place to learn. Outside of school, self- expression is limitless. Some parents also believe that it could interfere with students' natural behavior to experiment with different identities. Having uniforms in schools helps erase the defined line of the social classes. Typically, popular kids in the higher social classes wear the trendiest clothing...
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. This is opposed to a school with no uniform some students will feel inferior to the one’s wearing brand name clothes. Also uniforms lower the chances of jealousy between the students. The students would feel more unified with each other. Further more school uniforms can alleviate school violence, because it will help kids with less money escape the teasing they would get if the school had no uniforms. Also uniforms will help differentiate students from gan...
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
Individuality is an important reason why having school uniforms is a disadvantage. According to the ACLU, school uniforms took its toll on children’s creativity, independence, and individual behavior. During school, the only way a child can portray their individualism is through their clothing. Students cannot freely express themselves in any other form without going through school officials first (ACLU).
Any teenage girl I 've talked to about school uniforms is quick to say "Ew I 'd hate having school uniforms!" Often, a teenage girl imagines a school uniforms being ugly, maybe society or media has put that concept into their heads. Although, school uniforms are often not as ugly as the typical teenage girl would think. Cakey jeans, plaid skirts, and collard shirts are most schools uniform criteria. Which may not be every teenage girl 's favorite fashion. A girl wearing her own clothing of choice can give others a better perception of who she is, what she likes, how she wants to be preserved by others. What if those reasons were used against her? What if saving money was a factor to having school uniforms? How can competition come to
All too often children are forced to fit in. When they don’t it is hard for them to function in school. Children will take from others, rob and even murder others all so they can have the latest Jordan’s or Nike hat. When children wear uniforms they all look alike kind of like team mates do. Able Being able to tell who belongs at the school is important to keep away the gangs. It also keeps those who would plan to harm others out of the building by helping staff identify who should or should not be on school grounds. Yes I know that there are ways around this but it would deter some. I do think that schools who adopt a uniform for both teachers and students are taking a great extra step to insure that the students are clear also as to who belongs in the school and who doesn’t. According to King (1998), “Children's hunger to be fashionable brings another dimension to the connection between clothing style and...
There is an unending discussion in schools across the country about school uniforms and whether or not they make for a better experience in school for the students or just the teachers. Those who are pro-uniforms insist that uniforms will allow families to save money and time on clothing. This is so because these days children often get ready by themselves, because their parents are usually off to work before they wake up for school (Linder-Altman). Uniforms give the parents of these children confidence that their child is going to school looking halfway decent. There are also claims that uniforms will decrease the amount of bullying in school because all of the students will look alike. On the other hand, those protesting uniforms believe although everyone is pretty much dressed the same, cliques will still form and bullying will still exist (Dress code and Uniforms). I wore uniforms throughout primary school and I didn’t like them because I always felt uncomfortable in them. In hindsight, it could have been because I felt my personality was bottled up every time I put on my school uniform. There are claims that uniforms are not inclusive and won’t allow children to accept each other because of their differences (Linder-Altman). When everyone in the school is dressed alike, students may feel as if they aren’t able to express his/herself. Those unfamiliar with this topic may be interested to know the
Should school uniforms be required? Some say that uniforms help students focus on academics instead of fashion. Others believe that students should have the freedom to choose what they wear to school in order to express their differences and their uniqueness. After considering both sides of the issue, I strongly believe that uniforms should be introduced in primary public and private schools. Wearing school uniforms does not promote unfair comparisons between student’s incomes in terms of clothing; they aid students in developing their inner qualities instead of focusing on the outer aspects of themselves in the crucial earlier years of their lives, and provides a platform for practicing discipline.
All individuals struggle with discovering who they are and who they may want to be in the future. School environment, either negatively or positively, impacts the result of this greatly. Uniforms in the learning environment have become a highly debated subject all across the country. Although some individuals believe school uniforms have a positive affect, those people should understand the negatives because uniforms promote appearance over character, lower student’s self-esteem, and conflict with the right of expression.
Have you ever considered why students should wear a school uniform? For a long time, scholars have debated worldwide, whether students should wear a school uniform or not. After a lot of research, I can evidently see that people still have diverse opinions about this subject as some people think school uniform is essential, some are just fine with its existence, and some think it is useless.
