Have you ever wondered why pandas are going extinct? People have been hunting pandas since 1869 mostly for their unique fur pattern and because there was a drastic decrease in pandas in China the Chinese started making it illegal to hunt these giant creatures. Although, with any animal that is hunted we cannot blame these hunters for making pandas almost extinct (though they had a big role)—pandas were made illegal to hunt in the early 1960 . So what is the biggest reason that these bears are going extinct? Well that has more to do with the bear’s reproductive systems and when estrus occurs. “‘Our male has never really been able to breed with the female properly,’ Pierre Comizzoli, a veterinarian and reproductive physiologist with the National Zoo, ‘We always offer the male a chance to breed with the female, but at some point we have to make a decision to artificially inseminate because we don’t want to miss the opportunity’” . Although artificial insemination is much more effective than natural mating, it is still very difficult for zoologist to know if they were successful in impregnating the female because of her body structure. Unfortunately, zookeepers usually have no idea whether the panda is actually pregnant until right before she gives birth. Since sows produce the pregnancy hormone progesterone whether or not they are pregnant and will act as if they are pregnant (pseudopregnancy) by building nests, sleeping more and eating less even if there’s no fetus . Even if a panda does get pregnant, it’s incredibly hard—even for experts—to find a fetus on ultrasound, because it’s tough to spot the tiny eraser-sized fetus hidden beneath layers of fat, bladder and a stomach full of bamboo in the 230-pound mother …show more content…

At birth, pandas have white skin. Within 2 weeks, their skin turns gray where eventually the hair will be black. Cubs have panda fur coloration within one month after birth. The blind cubs are able to open their eyes at about 45 days. The cub starts to crawl at 75 to 90 days. Cubs start to eat bamboo at 5 months and are weaned at 6 months. The cub weighs 80 pounds at one year and lives with its mother until 18 months. Panda's reach sexually maturity when they are 5.5 to 6.5 years
