– Just as I said earlier, in the front of the building, is all street parking. There are no curb cuts directly by the front door. However, if you go down the sidewalk to where their garage is, you can access a curb cut there. But, this could create a problem for accessibility, especially when there is still snow on the road and sidewalks. If a person parked their vehicle farther away from the curb cuts, they would have to push the individual through the snow or slush and onto the main road to get to the sidewalk. Then, once they were on the sidewalk, the person would have to push again through the snow on the sidewalk , in order to get to the front door. This is not fun, as I had to do this exact thing for many years. The ideal situation would have designated parking …show more content…
places which would create easier access to the front door. I picture an elderly person pushing through the snow or ice with their walker or wheelchair. The individual could easily fall and break a bone. This curb cut by the funeral home is not an ideal situation . – In the back of the building there are no curbs. (grass and gravel) • Is the sidewalk well maintained?
– In the front of the building, the sidewalk was well maintained. The ramp (gentle inline in the sidewalk), was just redone with new cement. This shows me that the funeral home owners are interested in making the building more accessible. However, much more should be done to make it more accessible.
– In the back of the building, the sidewalk was also well maintained. However, it was not wheelchair accessible.
• Do the stairs have hand rails and ramps?
– The stairs in the front of the building do not have hand rails. In the picture that I found, the building did have hand rails. However, now the front step does not have a hand rail. In years past, there were three steps to go down, in order to access the main front entrance. The funeral home recently remodeled the front entrance. There is now only one step to go down to get to the front door. The funeral home also added a ramp for individuals in wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, etc. However, I think that they should have put a hand rail back on the front step. Even, though it is only one step, people still need the stability of the handrail. This simple railing could prevent many miss steps, balance issues, and
falls. – There is also, a ramp or slow incline in the front of the building. However, the individual’s access to the ramp is not close to the entrance door. It is by their garage door on the far side of the building (See above picture). In a perfect situation, the building would have curb cuts directly by the front entrance door so, the ramp or incline could be right there (instead of by their garage). I already touched on my opinion of where the ramp is located. Therefore, in winter this location could create a problem for individuals attempting to access the ramp. They would have to go on the road and through snow or ice in order to get access to the ramp. This is an extreme problem for people. I think this should have been re-thought before the funeral home did the renovation to the ramp. – The stairs in the back of the building lead to the front entrance of the building. These stairs do have hand rails.
There are many examples of cities reforming itself over time, one significant example is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. More than a hundred years after the discovery of gold that drew thousands of migrants to Vancouver, the city has changed a lot, and so does one of its oldest community: Downtown Eastside. Began as a small town for workers that migrants frequently, after these workers moved away with all the money they have made, Downtown Eastside faced many hardships and changes. As a city, Vancouver gave much support to improve the area’s living quality and economics, known as a process called gentrification. But is this process really benefiting everyone living in Downtown Eastside? The answer is no. Gentrification towards DTES(Downtown Eastside) did not benefit the all the inhabitants of the area. Reasons are the new rent price of the area is much higher than before the gentrification, new businesses are not community-minded, and the old culture and lifestyle of the DTES is getting erased by the new residents.
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” This lovely quote was spoken by a brilliant mind we all know today as the children’s book writer, Dr. Seuss. When someone mentions his name, we all immediately think, “Oh! The children's book writer!” but what we fail to recognize is that Seuss was shaping the minds of us and millions of other children to find the best in people, be a better person and to agree with equality.
In this experiment Sequoyah students measured the ramps that are used around the Sequoyah campus to see if the ramps followed the American Disabilities Act requirements. The students used the skills and knowledge they acquired in their Trigonometry class, taught by Mr. Morris.
The elevators are wide so that many wheel chair can fit in and save a lot of trips from one floor to another, Also the button in the elevators are big and they are place lower down so it will be easy for wheel chair user to reach .
Homelessness in the United States has been an important subject that the government needs to turn its attention to. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). The United States must consider this subject that most of the people underestimate it and not pay attention
Sidewalks are different shapes and sizes, people tend to make their own decisions to which way they would want to go. Going through the motions on a sidewalk is similar as going through the motions of life. There are many turns that could get you to your final destination and turns that can also get you into places you would not feel so comfortable being. Staying on the right path and trying to get to where you need to go isn’t so hard but when you have other sidewalks with nice grass and big beautiful street lights that can be a very big distraction to the eye and that could cause problems in your life. Nice sidewalks sometimes don't always tend to continue a nice path so they can be very believing at first but when you make it to the end
Gentrification is described as the renovation of certain neighborhoods in order to accommodate to young workers and the middle-class. For an area to be considered gentrified, a neighborhood must meet a certain median home value and hold a percentage of adults earning Bachelor’s degree. Philadelphia’s gentrification rate is among the top in the nation; different neighborhoods have pushed for gentrification and have seen immense changes as a result. However, deciding on whether or not gentrification is a beneficial process can become complicated. Various groups of people believe that cities should implementing policy on advancing gentrification, and others believe that this process shouldn’t executed. Both sides are impacted by the decision to progress gentrification; it is unclear of the true implications of completely renovating impoverished urban areas; gentrification surely doesn’t solve all of a community’s issues. I personally believe that gentrification is not necessarily a good or bad process; gentrification should occur as a natural progression of innovative economies and novel lifestyles collide within certain areas. Policy involving gentrification should not support the removal of people out of their neighborhood for the sake of advancement.
Navigating the internal environment is a challenge for the visually impaired that is typically minimized through familiarization of the internal environment. That is to say, the visually impaired people can learn the way their homes are arranged. However, the issue of navigating the external environment proves to be a challenge because the external environment is not directly under the control of the visually impaired person [2]. It is challenging for the person to take a stroll, access social amenities and go to places of work. When examined on a global scale, most visually impaired people depend on the public transport system and walking to navigate around. Therefore, they depend on sighted assistance to identify the bus number, bus stops and the physical location of the bus. Moreover, challenges of navigation through walking includes barriers, uncovered drains, construction sites and lack of handicap-friendly
According to Pascale, Berkeley uses trespassing laws and loitering laws to keep people off the sidewalks and away from places like parks and laundromats. And in Santa Cruz you can be arrested for sitting on a sidewalk, sleeping outside, or even sleeping in a car (321). Pascale asserts that the reason for these laws is to protect the businesses located around these areas. She also says that “no one wants to run a guantlet of panhandlers to get to a boutique or step over people sleeping on the sidewalk to buy a cappuccino” (321). And for that reason, most business owners think it reflects badly on them if there are homeless people loitering or sleeping in front of their store (321).
Homelessness is a subject that has inspired many to write poems, speeches, and even songs. However, there is more depth to homelessness than just a source for inspiration; this is an ongoing problem for many all over the world. The 40th president to the United States, Ronald Reagan, once said that "what we have found in this country, and maybe we're more aware of it now, is one problem that we've had, even in the best of times, and that is the people who are sleeping on the grates, the homeless, you might say, by choice."(Reagan). The president's expression is very powerful even today, implying that even in the best of times homelessness is one of the top issues in society. Notice how President Regan cleverly used the wording "by choice" at the end of the sentence, what did he mean to convey by this? Was he implying that those who are homeless are so by choice? Or that many individuals perceived homelessness to be a choice? Perhaps it was a way to raise awareness of the impending problems that can lead an individual to homelessness. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness and the National Coalition for the Homeless, there are three triggering factors that lead to homelessness, lack of affordable housing, unemployment, and health care ("Why Are People Homeless?"). Therefore, when exploring into more depth the determining reasons, considering the key roles that a home, money, and employment play in an individual’s life will facilitate a better understanding of the downward spiral towards homelessness.
D. Today I would like to encourage you to donate your time or money to help fight the homeless epidemic in our nation.
Parking by the dormitories is almost impossible. Students who live at particular dorms find themselves faced with the problem of having to park on the other side of campus. Those who live in Brown Hall, which is behind the Thompson center, have the most parking problems on campus. This is because the Thompson center is a very large building housing various departments on campus. Therefore it receives a lot of traffic all day. Visitors to the campus are taking over the parking lots around the Thompson center, which is forcing students to park other places on campus and some students chose to disregard the signs posted for reserved parking.
Since the dawn of humanity, exercise has been crucial for physical survival. In recent times, however, exercise is losing its significance to human survival. Some would argue that it already has lost its significance, and as exercise becomes less important, people exercise less. According to fitness.gov, only 33% of adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week (citation). Clearly there is a problem. However, there is still a fraction of the population that exercises diligently. Why do these people stick with it? Exercise has countless advantages that are still extremely important to our lives. So even though the need of exercise may appear to be diminishing, the practical effects should be enough to encourage people

pedestrian parts of the streets- serve many purposes besides carrying pedestrians” (The uses of sidewalks: Safety, pg 29). The author is trying to say that besides walking and carrying vehicles, the sidewalks play a major role in protecting our lives. Certain factors that contribute to the safety are there should be a line that will be able to separate private and public, people should use it continuously. These people also misuse the sidewalks. For instance, it is always visible people dumping their small trashes on the sidewalk. The people will not understand the value of sidewalk until they lose it. They forget the part that these sidewalks serve as a means of communication. Every day, we see people socializing on sidewalks. Jacobs introduces a neighborhood where the citizens leave their keys with the shopkeepers.
