Taxes are an irrefutable piece of the new American dream. The growth of government within transactions between business and the public is arguably the fragile link in today’s market economy. As citizens grow more dependent upon the government, its programs and subsidies, the economy shifts further from market and more towards the command style. Taxation comes in many forms, and is spent ubiquitously. The countless millions drained from the classes are redistributed throughout, where there are many beneficiaries.

These agendas are often politically driven and are superficially for the people. Infrastructure, in the forms of roads are seen throughout every state, and yet somehow, it seems as though North Carolina is constantly working on them. Is it for the benefit for the people who are going to use the roads upon completion, for the workers earing wages, or for the companies’ products being purchased to be used? These taxes are taken from the people’s income, consumables, and wealth. Tax brackets are used to determine the percentage of income a person must pay out of their check to the government. The rates haven’t always been substantial. Pre-World War II Era, tax rates were as low as 1% and 4% (Roberts, 2014). Consumable items, mostly purchased at a grocery or wholesale store, are also taxed, commonly known as sales tax. Although these taxes vary from state to state, the total cost the individual pays is the amount for the items purchased plus a percentage toward the government. More simply put, if a person were to buy a single loaf of bread, that person would have to pay at least two taxes; once on income, and the other on sales tax. Taxes on wealth come in the form of property tax. Owning a car, a home, land, a boat, etc. all come with extra taxes. Basically, if you own something of worth, you must pay the government in order to keep it.
Nevertheless, there are benefits that come from taxation. Given that government has its hand in so many affairs, it can reduce the opportunity for monopolies, and colluding oligopolies. Also, government can reduce the copious amounts of pollutions moneygrubbing corporations put out in the forms of air, ground, and water.
