The holiday 's always bring a certain sort of new anxiety. Finals, tests, research papers; in addition to just life. Christmas, Hananka, Kawaiins and the other holidays celebrated at this time brings even more anixety especially if you are worried about money and gift giving.
Life is stressful. But as students, parents and others we must learn how to manage that stress in a positive and beneficial way. The reason why I bring this up is because lately there have been a series of articles and news reports suggesting that college admissions is becoming to competive and our students are crumbling under the stress. One article I read from a college admissions advisor even went so far as to say she is suggesting that her students get B 's instead

Well, guess what so is life. And studies have shown that life is even harder without a college degree. There is also the reality that college is not for everyone. And there are avenues to take if that 's your case, but just to strive for B 's in school and not applying to colleges because they are too competitive is so counterproductive. Lowering the admission standards is …show more content…
Yes AP classes are harder, they are suppose to be. They are preparing you for the next step. All of you that participate in sports, you know to get to the next level you practice daily. Student musicians, do you get to be best by just looking at your instrument in the corner? Well the same goes for studies. You can 't just look at the book and know what 's inside or look at the words without comprehension and expect to know the material. Teachers are not always fair, or even like you, but guess what, so what!!! Ten to fifteen years from now you won 't even remember their names, but what about that job you could of had if you graduated from college. And who is paying the consequences, certainly not that teacher or professor. Besides, I know I don 't want my next surgeon to have gotten C 's and D 's in biology operating on me. Or the car I 'm drving, designed by someone who failed physics.
The other arguement, students are not enjoying life being stuck all day studying. This is just a short window of your life. You 're in college for 4 years and graduate school another 3 years or more depending on your major. Studies show we now live well into our 80 's, 90 's and 100 's. You do the math. I would rather you spend your life doing something you enjoy doing because it is your passion and it took you 8 years to be the best at it, than living day to day, paycheck to paycheck because you got a chance to stop and smell the roses at 15 years old. Life is never easy, no matter how hard we try to short cut and escape the inevitable difficulties. After college is when life sets in, when work becomes a necessity and we all begin to find a place to settle down. People respond differently to different situations. Some of us embrace the freedom and the ability to earn money and spend money indiscriminately. Others crumple under the social pressures placed on us.
Many parents tend to question if they or their child is ready for early college. They fear their child isn’t mentally or emotionally focused to go off to college by themselves. What they don’t realize is students going to college early bring about better jobs, connections, opportunities, and a better experience.
...it is seemingly impossible to force people to avoid college, it is best to just accept that the value of a degree is decreasing and will continue to decrease. Then, once nearly all of America has a college degree, the next hot thing will be to get a master’s degree, or maybe even a doctorate. It will be a dark day for America when that man scanning your milk at the grocery store is a doctor. Maybe the solution is to make getting a degree harder. Should everyone really be able to obtain a college degree?
Many people attend college just for that fact that everyone says college is for everyone and to be successful and happy, a college degree is needed. Stated at Pysologolytoday.com, “College works best for students with intelligence scores placing them in the top 30% of the general population. And students seeking a college education need more than high IQ numbers.” With this being stated, one can realize that some students do not have exactly what it takes to go to college. Students all around the world have high IQ’s and some have low IQ’s. This does not mean that they can do any better than the other, but the ones who do not have much “smart brains,” might not make it through college. It can even be that some students just do not want to continue with school when they have already been through so much of it. It has been argued that to be successful a college degree is needed. It has been proven that a college degree is not always necessarily needed for one to have a good job or be successful. Saying that, students who just do not want to attend college should not be pushed to because it could simply not be for
Although most will be pushed to go to college some will choose to go out into the workforce immediately and that cannot be looked down upon because that is their decision and that is what they want to do, but with that in mind they must always consider college because in a lifetime it will more than likely be the wiser decision. One who takes the risk and tries to go to college might find out they want to be a biology teacher and not an astrophysicist and that is all due to college and all the experiences that it can bring along that have absolutely nothing to do with education but of broadening horizons and making one see different points of view. That is where the true value of college lies, not with the education and degree, but with the experiences, meeting new people, learning new ideals and cultures, and the ultimate tool you gain is just finding out who you are as a person. During college you learn what you like and don’t like, what makes you happy and doesn’t, you find yourself during college and that cannot simply be overlooked because of a price tag. That is why I believe everyone should consider college and overlook the price tag all to find themselves and further them along as a human being and a
And since we are, so it 's worth going to college? Obviously, the answer is yes. No college, no university, our knowledge of the world would be lower and therefore, our ability to develop ourselves more limited. Knowledge is power, as is usual said. And we are so soon useful, as soon as you have the title of which are already engineers, architects or doctors, we stop. It is what is called a successful strategy, as opposed to maximizing strategies. By successful I mean that when we reach a sufficient level, satisfying, for some work left to be formed and had to work. But one of the greatest teachings that make you go to college is confidence in yourself, think about college as the next stage towards the real world. Living together with colleagues the majority of the time but with your own schedule, live alone, set your own schedule, responsible for your own tasks, are all things that help you prepare for adulthood within the relatively lenient campus atmosphere. If we worked so maximizing, would not stop studying when enough, would stop when we got to the best of our ability. And utilitarianism, as we are seeing bitterly, is only a short-term strategy valid. If we focus only on minimum cover, do not get very far. In the long run, it 's good idea to be maximizing. College is much more than spend time in the classroom working to obtain a diploma or just good grades. In the process, meet new people that will become very important for
First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. In Pharinet’s blog post, Is College for Everyone? He states that “…it is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 50% of students who begin college never graduate. There exist students who are not yet ready for the academic and financial challenges of college. There exist students who do not have the desire for college or learning.” This statement is important because if 50% of students that begin college never gradua...
After high school majority of parents want their children to go to college, graduate, have a promising career and start a family and this is the American dream. Of course going to college will earn you a career and make you financial stable with certain jobs. To earn all those things you need to work even harder to achieve them. Going through four to eight years of college is exhausting and time consuming. There are a lot of stages you go through during college starting from high school. For me I can say that it has been a long journey but it is a well worth journey because of the reward I will receive in the end. In college financial aid, teachers, assignments, and classrooms are different from high school in a major way.
In our society, a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. The main reason people go to college is not because they want to, but because they have to. Guidance counselors and parents pressure most high school seniors to go to college because it is “the right thing to do.” Our society has it in our mind that if a person does not go to college they will not become successful. Exactly one year ago I was in high school, and being a senior was probably the most stressful year. Most seniors worried about filling out college applications and deciding what major to do. Inputting all your grades and knowing that you were not the best student is especially stressful. For most people, going to college seems
Many people have a hard time trying to decide whether college is really worth all the hassle that comes with it. Plenty would claim no, while many would protest yes. People who argue that college is worth it contend that colleges provide many outlets to explore different careers, college graduates receive higher paying jobs, and college graduates gain more interpersonal skills. While people who disagree believe that you could still become successful with the just the general high school knowledge. Sometime in the future, maybe there will be a higher percentage of people going to college, earning a degree and achieving a better job than just sticking with a high school diploma.
It is 2am and you wish you had more time for sleeping. You have had a long day between school and work. Probably tired and overwhelm of all the homework that you have to turn in this week. Sometimes you may ask your self the question, “Is it worth the effort I am making to go to college?” I am sure that some of you have had those days were you wish you can stay at home watching TV, playing video games, sleeping, and not worrying about studying for a test. How many of you have felt this way at least once this semester? Turn around, as you can see you are not the only person that feels the same way. However, I will like to tell you the reasons why you should graduate from college. Today, I will talk about the knowledge you get from going
Everyone deals with stress at some point in his or her life. Most people deal with it daily. As defined in the book called Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, stress is, “The mental, emotional, and physiological response of the body to any situation that is new, threatening, frightening, or exciting” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). This stress is caused by a stressor, which is also known as “a stress-causing event” (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2012). Stressors can take all different forms, from moving to a new town, having a baby, or even writing a paper (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). One major stressor in life can be going to college. If not coped with properly, these stressors can leave a person with too much stress that could end up harming them mentally and physically, such as developing an illness (Boyd, Wood, & Wood, 2011). There are several ways to cope with stress. Some healthy ways to cope with stress would be practicing emotion-focused coping, building time-management techniques, and practicing meditation.
Stress happens to everyone at some point in their lives. My definition of stress is when one is worried about something that is bothering them, whether it is miner or major. Personally I stress about every day, financially, family, school, work, at tons more. The key is how does one actually deal with stress so it will not get out of hand? Everyone is different and some may not know how to cope with it. The actual definition according to our Life Fitness book stress is used to describe the general physical and emotional state that accompanies the stress response. There are ways to deal with stress. There are many things that happens to us when we stress. Three examples are; types of stress, common sources of stress, and how to deal with stress.
There are many ways that should be implemented in order to reduce the stress on students so that they can thrive because, without them, the school systems will only be creating generations of stressed out, materialistic, and miseducational students (Palmer, 2005). There are multiple causes when it comes to stressed out students. First, consider where the pressure is coming from for students to get good grades. Parents and teachers tend to be the main suspects. Parents want to see their kids succeed in everything they do, and grades are no different.
Individuals in my generation that decide to go away for college may graduate with a degree but they also graduate with debt and have a hard time finding work in their area of study. College graduates are young and many may not have much experience in their field. It is a bittersweet option to go to college and further your education, I am all for it, but I am not for getting yourself in tons of debt, that will cause you to live your whole life paying off student loans and such. Which is one of the reasons why I chose to stay at home and go to community college, I’m saving money while still getting a great education. In earlier generations, people may not have felt that college was important because they needed a job to support themselves and their families. That is understandable because in the early years becoming an adult meant turning of age, 18, getting a job, moving out and starting your own family, but now turning 18 doesn’t mean you automatically are an adult and can move out and start your own life, I have friends that went to college, have a job but still are not able to move out on their own even in their
