Live 4 Snow – Get Your Snowshoes On!
Early weather reports promise Vancouverites an above average and perhaps epic snow year. Furthermore, Accuweather predicts the potential for a couple of Arctic intrusions, “which may set the stage for a few snow events near the coast.” While many will cringe at the thought of a “snow event,” those of us who adore winter, glance up at the North Shore Mountains with joy in our hearts. Yes, if you live for snow, this may be your year to try snowshoeing, and the trails will be opening soon!
Relatively new to the sport of snowshoeing, I must say I am sold! As an avid hiker, the onset of winter often limited my choice of trails and ability to access the backcountry. Eager to extend my hiking season, the move to snowshoes seemed like a natural

Whether zipping along a winding trail, flying through the open flats, or powering up a steep hill, snow machines and the rider need to use physics to stay in control of the machine and themselves. The main components are the track, engine, skis and riding. Snowmachine tracks are essential to making a snowmachine move. Ever since snow machines first originated in the late 50's, designers have been finding ways to improve traction in a variety of conditions. Some of these conditions are driving on groomed trails, not groomed trails, overflow, and deep snow.
When you first walk on the trail it takes you down you about 1.5 miles down the remains of an old gravel road. Then, this is where the actual beauty of the trail starts. During you’re first half mile or so, you will notice a lot of greenery, especially in the spring and summer months. Wildlife is somewhat common, and you will see many hikers, because of how popular the trail is. Once you approach the Little Pigeon River, and cross the bridge there, is when this trail gets more rugged. “At about the 1.6-mile point to the 2.25-mile point, the elevation nearly changes 500 feet” (Ramsey Trail Ways 1). During the time that you cross the bridge ...

I have been to a place that has lots of interesting snow and others. It is Lake Tahoe. It is a place that I will never get bored of that it has a lot of snow! Mostly you could do anything with snow. But most of all, beating your older brother up in a snowball fight. I really loved when each time I went down the big mountain. It was really amazing. I was also really happy of building snowmen and building snow forts that I never even knew I can build. It was amazing for all of what could be crafted with snow. The fantastic trip has come to the start!
After a great night of sleep we headed out to the world renown mountain of Jackson Hole. It is known for being the steepest mountain on which a ski resort is set up. It is also know for having a great view of Grand Teton, one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains. We could not have asked for a better day of riding. there was a fresh 14” of snow under our boards and after a little bit of exploring we found some great out of bounds and woods riding.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would

I always felt that I had to know or believe something with certainty. Not so now. I’ve come to realize how little I know about anything. With snowboarding that’s the point I most understand. It’s just when you think you’ve got it under control that the board goes out from under you, and you discover yourself sloshing in the congealed icy mush. Suspending judgement and having fun at the same time and being confident and assertive balances me, and I ascertain an equilibrium. Achieving balance, however, is a constantly mercurial endeavor. If you’re too careful, you’ll never carve the slopes, and if you’re not careful enough, you’ll lose the edge, and forces beyond your control will sling you into the trees or off the slope completely. I’m not anticipating all gloom and melancholy depression with all the snow and barren, gray trees standing stark against the aging night. In fact, anytime I strap on a snowboard and point it downhill, I feel the life force of fun and I can’t stop smiling. It’s just fun—there might not be a better word. On the next slope, should I go it alone? Bringing my favorite people along with me will be the greatest
If you can’t tell snowmobiling is a huge part of my life. It’s a good way to lose weight and have fun. You can see who is the best of the best in your group and see who the weak one is that day, but always be safe and don’t go riding by yourself and not tell no one. Start young and ride till you die and always be
The freezing wind had chilled my hand to the bone. Even as I walked into my cabin, I shivered as if there was an invisible man shaking me. My ears, fingers, toes, and noes had turned into a pale purple, only starting to change color once I had made a fire and bundled myself in blankets like ancient Egyptians would do to their deceased Pharaohs. The once powdered snow on my head had solidified into a thin layer of ice. I changed out of the soaking wet clothes I was wearing and put on new dry ones. With each layer I became more excited to go out and start snowboarding. I headed for the lift with my board and my hand. Each step was a struggle with the thick suit of snow gear I was armored in.
Thin air encompasses me as I commence the final day of skiing at Vail, Colorado. Seven days of skiing elapse rather painlessly; I fall occasionally but an evening in the Jacuzzi soothes my minor aches. Closing time approaches on the final day of our trip as I prepare myself for the final run of the vacation. Fresh off the ski lift, I coast toward the junction of trails on the unoccupied expert face of the mountain. After a moment of thought, I confidently select a narrow trail so steep that only the entrance can be seen from my viewpoint.
During winter vacation, I usually take a skiing trip to a cabin in the Washington State Wilderness. Loaded with everything from Monopoly to a waffle iron, my backpack shields me from snow dripped by evergreens. It never actually skis, but my backpack wouldn't dare miss a downhill ski trip in the Rockies of Idaho. I leav...
