With all the stress and wildness we have in school now, if there was school year-round students and teachers would not know what to do. Students would get tired of school if it was this way. Most of them would drop out and then teachers would be out a job. Teachers and students need a break from school to relax and enjoy not stressing about all the work that has to be done. Having school year-round should not be an option because students/teachers could lose opportunities with work and trainings, and could have an increase in stress.
If there was school year-round students would lose opportunities with work. Most high school students that attend school have summer jobs. A summer job such as cutting grass is a way that students earn money.
They save up what they make all summer to pay off student fees and other things for the school year. If there was school year-round teachers would not be able to have extra work. They could not have credit recovery classes for students that have failed. Some teachers help out during the summer with students that have failed their core classes. Some high school teachers also teach college classes during the summer. These would not be options if there was school year-round.
First, the pros of year round schooling can include; effects on absence and burnout rates, effects on budget, more frequent breaks, and also a big effect on academic achievement. The way that year round schooling works to reduce burnout and also reduce absences is that by having more frequent breaks; students are less likely to want to skip class. This is definitely noticeable after spring break where most schools don’t have any days off until the end of the year that is usually more than 2 months straight. In other words the “April, May, June stretch”. Year round schooling will also help students with their academics as well because with the way the schedule is set up, students do not ha...
In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when our country’s students needed school off to help with harvesting (Palmer). Trimble Local Schools Superintendent Kim Jones says, “year-round schooling is the notion of getting away from the old agrarian calendar...which was formed up around the planting season. Students were out of school from April until harvest to work in the fields,” (qtd. in Hapka). Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar.
In conclusion, the advantages of year-round schooling are beneficial to all. If all schools did change to year round schooling, I believe we would be able to teach all the students without having to reteach skills from previous years, it could be done during intersessions. Year-round schooling benefits both the teachers and students. Teachers are able to reflect on their teachings and adjust in time before the next session would begin. The students would feel positive about themselves in school. With this change, we may even be able to accomplish No Child Left Behind.
Year round schooling sounds rigorous, but in fact it is just a change in schedule. The traditional school year was made with farming families in mind when the families needed their children to help with the crops in the summer. That is why the traditional school year has a three month period where kids are not in school over the summer. In today’s modern world, that does not make any sense because now a days, big huge machines take care of the farms and crops. Also, our economy does not depend on the crops and farms like it did back in the 20th century. The year round school year would still require the same amount of school days as the traditional school year, which is 180 days in the classroom. But instead of a prolonged summer break, it would have a 45-15 plan. 45 days in school and 15 days out of it, which translates to nine weeks in school and three weeks off. The breaks would include three weeks off in fall, winter, spring, and summer. These breaks would be in nine week intervals.
One reason why there shouldn't be year round school is because kids have a lack of free time. Therefore, they wouldn't have a summer break or other breaks which means they couldn't hang out with family like what kids would normally do. Another reason why they would have a lack of free time is because they would be worrying
Would you consider going to a school where you learn year-round? Maybe this would be your ideal school, but, when would you get to have some time to go to summer camp, or get a summer job, or play a sport with games during the day? Schools with the traditional schedule may actually be a better choice, and not just because kids love summer break. Schools should have a traditional school year schedule instead of a year round schedule because there isn’t a significant difference between the students’ performance, and year round schedules make planning family vacations hard, make the teachers’ job more difficult, and are more expensive. Also, having a summer break allows kids to participate in activities that they would not be able to do on a year round schedule due to the shorter breaks.
Should school be year-round? Well, I say yes because our young people will get done with High School faster. And if school is year round, students will not have a chance to get in a lot of trouble and they will not be able to join a gang or have time to hang on a block because they will not have a long summer break. Somebody needs to bring this problem to the school board to see if they will make the change to save many students’ lives by keeping them off the streets and keeping them in school all year long. If the children were in school longer, they would most likely turn out better, but it’s up to the people of communities to push kids through school.
To have year round schooling it much more expensive than a regular school year, to have school year round it, can cost “up to $1,300 more per student.” Also, most students in high school have a summertime job for those three months. But, if schooling was year round teens wouldn't be able to work in the summer. So the amount of times teens can work would decrease. In addition, kids would be much busier with school year around because of all the work and less free time to do whatever. For instance, kids with a lot of homework, projects and other things from school wouldn’t allow them to do things they like in their free time. For example, kids wouldn't be able to hang out with friends, family, play travel sports, or go on vacations because of the lack of free time they would get with school year
Having year-round school would cause students to pay more money to attend. During the middle of summer the temperature is higher than at the begging. So we would have to pay more money for air condition to keep us cooler. The school would also be using the lights more with the school not being officially closed over the three weeks so we would need to change the lights more.
Teachers would have an increase in their salary and wouldn’t have to work a second job. According to https://www.screenflex.com/reasons-why-year-round-school-is-a-good-idea/ “...not only would teachers not have to work a second job, but also an increase in their yearly income.” This is important because, most of the job choices don’t pay them as much as they wish.
Staying with a traditional school year and keeping the 3 month summer allows kids to recover from the stress of the school year and fully relax for the upcoming year. More frequent, shorter breaks would be nice, but that would require that I go to school during some of the summertime when I would normally be decompressing and having fun with my friends and family. Additionally, requiring schools to be open during summer months would cost the schools more money to cool the buildings due to the heat. Also, if the schools stayed open all year due to overcrowding, they wouldn't recover those expenses when the school was closed because it wouldn't ever be closed.
There are many different year-round school schedules. The most popular one is the forty-five fifteen schedule. On that schedule, the students go to school for forty-five days then have fifteen days off. That translates to five weeks of school then three weeks off. There are two other main schedules. One of them being the ninety and thirty, twelve weeks and four weeks. Also, there is the sixty and twenty, eight weeks and almost three weeks. All of these schedules have the same little breaks, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break worked into them. I would say that any of those are better than thirty-six weeks of school then fifteen weeks, one hundred eighty days the ninety days.
Summer vacation: "school holiday in summer between school years and the longest break in the school year, typically between 6 and 14 weeks (Wikipedia)". Summer break originates all the way back to the mid 1850 's for rural American schools. Summer break was not always around for all schools though, it only came around to all schools in the early 1900 's due to Americans wanting a standardized school schedule across the nation. The summer break was then used for students to relax their minds from school and for mostly to help in the fields for growing season (infoplease). Fast forward to the modern world, now summer break is still used for relaxation and free time from the school year, but it is no longer used for agriculture needs, especially now that agriculture only makes up only 1% of America 's GDP (USDA). So, doesn 't this seem outdated and a foolish waste of time? Well, some old traditions are really hard to break, and some would argue that students need a break from school. I do believe that students need a break from school, but also that summer vacation is one of the main reasons that American student achievement is diminishing. I believe that the most cost effective way to grain student achievement is to
Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start times are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in many other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the Sleep Foundation, "The change will affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police, youth sports clubs, bus drivers and many others." Altering the school schedule would influence numerous aspects of people’s lives. Highly coordinated routines would have to be changed and adapted to the new schedule. A later release time would take time off of students’ free time in the afternoon. Clubs, sports, jobs, and other after-school activities would have
Imagine the clock hitting 3:00. Schools out right? Wait, the school day has been extended one hour and thirty minutes. But why? Currently, the average school day is six and a half hours long.
