Project runway is a reality television show that focuses on fashion designs. It is competitive in its narration whereby the contestants are in a competition to showcase their talent of creating the best clothes when presented with challenges that are constrained in theme, materials, and time (Avclub, Sep 14.14). Their designs are judged after showcasing them through paired models and each week one or more contestants who receive lower scores are eliminated. In due course of every season, there is progressive elimination of contestants determined by the scores from judges until there is only a few or one contestant remaining. The final contenders, usually 3 to 4, are therefore faced with the ultimate challenge that entails preparing a complete …show more content…
Every group of characters has a role to play in making the show a success. The major groups of characters are the contenders who are the center of attention as everything within the show revolves around them. Every season has a new group of contenders that compete against each other to showcase their skills in fashion design. It compromises of male and female adults from different dimensions of lives who have a passion and talent in fashion and design (Avclub, Apr 26,13). The contestants begin with auditioning and qualifiers are entitled to battle for the ultimate prize through a sequential elimination method in various states. The judges are another group of characters within the show. The role of judges is to resolve who among the contestants has scored higher in accordance with the given challenge. They may include top designers such as Michael Kors or fashion director such as Nina Garcia. Some of the judges are regular throughout the season whereas others are invited guest judges (Avclub, March 15, 2013). The presenters are the third group of characters within the show. The show began with only one presenter called Heidi Klum and was later joined by a co-presenter called Tim Gunn. These two are tasked with running the show, moderating, and resolution when needs arise and giving instructions in accordance with the rules of the show. Additionally, they are also tasked with revealing the winners at every stage of the show including the ultimate winner. The fourth group of characters are the models. The group is mainly comprised of females who play a vital role of showcasing the fashion designs made by the contestants. The models work with the designers throughout the season and are in competition with each other. Notably, whenever the number of the contestants is reduced the models are also reduced during the competition. At the initial states of the show
Television viewers have more viewing choices than ever before in deciding how to spend their time with television. In recent years, reality television has become a popular genre for viewing audiences. According to Nabi (304), reality television programs, "film real people as they live out events (contrived or otherwise) in their lives.” One popular subgenre of reality television is romance-based competition shows. These shows typically follow a contestant on their search for love and as they choose between a group of attractive suitors. Over the course of an entire season, the lead contestant eliminates the group of suitors until only one-suitor remains and the couple becomes engaged.
“Girls of all kinds can be beautiful --- from the thin, plus- sized, short, very tall, ebony to porcelain- skinny, the quirky, clumsy, shy, outgoing and all in between” (Tyra Banks). Tyra Banks is a worldwide model, actress, and businesswoman. She has modeled for numerous magazines and brands, such as Victoria Secret, Covergirl, and Vogue. She is also known for her TV production, America’s Next Top Model. In this show, she helps women and men of all types to become a model. However, based on the type of model someone wishes to become, there is usually an image the company wants. If someone wished to become a model who walks on the catwalks and runways, the companies would only want to take the client if they are tall, and lanky. Modeling
Throughout time, bright designers, world-known magazines and famous models, where few are only African-Americans, had represented fashion. The fashion industry is one of the most demanding industries ever created. On one hand, designers have to be unique, professionals, consistent and most important, famous, to keep up with the industry. On the other hand, models have to be beautiful, with unique personalities, and most important, skinny. Before the Civil Right Movement, white Americans models and designers represented the fashion industry until famous models such as Naomi Campbell, and Iman Abdulmajid entered the industry. They were the most influential models in the 1980’s and 1990’s with their personal contribution on the industry. Beauty did not only brought goods and happiness; it also brought controversy and discrimination.
Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. Fashion started off as an art form, a way for the rich to show their social status with unique and innovative designs that only they could afford. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the creators of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as leading names in today’s ready-to-wear industry. The list is long, but I chose to focus on the three most important designers in the modern fashion industry.
The show follows a group of friends who work at housewife Lisa Vanderpump’s restaurant Sur, located in Hollywood. When the show began, all the castmates were in their twenties and had high aspirations. Some wanted to be models and musicians, others pop stars, actors, and actresses. When they weren’t on casting calls on auditions, they spent their time working to pay their bills. Vanderpump and her husband, Ken Todd, not only own the restaurant but also help produce the show and appear on it.
But in other countries they made their own spin offs of the same show but the contestants get more gigs and contracts in the modeling/fashion industries- cutting out the entertainment portion helped agencies see the seriousness. The reason that other cultures or shows don't work the same way as they do here is for the culture upbringing that we are put up against as Watters states "People are not plug and play, as he puts it and you cannot expect a drop of western court system or form of government into another culture and expect it to work as it does back home" (Watters 501) Same kind of idea can be said about just about anything even the shows that are made here. One can't expect the same exact outcome from an idea that isn't familiar with a culture.
The cartoon created a place called Playa Des Losers, where once the contestants have been eliminated they go there and party. It is the complete opposite of the enviorment that they just came from. On Playa Des Losers they deffientely do not feel like losers because they are living in luxuiary. This is very similar to what Survivor has called Ponderosa, which is an incredibly nice house or resort with a spa and unlimited drinks and food. Those who make it to the jury get to go enjoy life off the show there, and live life with their former allies as well as enimies. Even though they are off the show there is still the occasinal drama that they bring there from the backstabs and blindsides they felt from the competetion. It is hilarious to watch the people on both Ponderosa and Playa Des Losers as they kick back, relax and watch the rest of the drama unfold amongst their friends still in the
...ow they truly are. They must follow what the producers set up for them to do. The photo shoots they participate in are often stereotypical for each girl’s race. They are dressed according to their race and are told how to act, so the picture looks acceptable to how a person of their race looks. The constants on the show are completely stripped of their natural selves and are “clothed” with stereotypes. She writes how the stereotypes serve as a negative purpose. The stereotypes presented in the show America’s Next Top Model has the level of interest viewers are looking for in television shows because it involves drama viewers are searching for when watching television. Stereotypes should not be introduced in media because kids and teenagers are constantly watching what is on TV, and that is a negative and insensitive way of displaying different races and ethnicities.
The Fashion Industry can be described as a glamorous world with cameras flashing, beautiful models strutting down the runway, in stunning and grand designs. What really goes on behind fashion’s dolled up doors is only an illusion compared to what reality is. Beautiful people, stylish clothing and timeless sophistication all make up the illusion of the glitz and glam of the fashion industry, but behind the curtains countless of models and designers constantly fall victim to this industry’s ever changing wrath. Fashion can be defined as a popular trend especially in styles of dress, ornaments or behavior. A model is a person who poses or displays for art purposes, fashion or other products and advertising. Fashion models are used mainly to promote products focusing mostly on clothing and accessory. The two main type of modeling in the fashion industry is commercial modeling and high fashion modeling. High Fashion models usually work for campaigns, designer’s collections and magazine editorials for high fashion designers. Runway modeling also known as “catwalk modeling” is displaying fashions and is generally performed by high fashion models. In my research paper, my main focus will be the multiple effects on high fashion models based upon the industry’s unregulated standards.
They specifically choose each model who walks in their shows. Sadly, many have said that a model 's race and skin color are usually a major factor in deciding if she books the show or not. The Guardian quotes Annie Walshaw, a model booker, on the subject: "When the client sends you a brief you know straight away they 're not talking about a black girl. They say they want 'a girl with long hair, who looks like a fairy ' or something. When they want a black girl, they will say 'looking for mixedrace girl, tribalprints location, desert scene". So according to Annie, some designers have a "look" in mind, which they believe models with darker skin don 't fit. This "reason" for not using models of color exposes stereotypes created by the fashion industry: White models are seen as delicate, blank canvases, while darker models are "edgy" or "exotic." However, as we all know, these stereotypes aren 't true. In the same article, Carole White, founder of Premier Model Management, describes another reason some designers shy away from selecting ethnically diverse models, saying, "There 's not so much work for them, and sometimes photographers and makeup artists are scared. They don 't know how to light or make them up properly so it takes a lot longer. It 's a slower process." This problem with photographers and makeup artists has been discussed by other models and fashion insiders. However, this seems to be
Like I said, the first episode paints almost all of them with a very bad image which cannot help them at the time of voting. In fact, Hank wasn’t the worst performing of the lot - and not even the blandest - but all his tidbits showed him to be jealous and nothing else. The contests should also become a bigger focus of the shows as this episode merely featured a fraction of it. The drills are really cruel and they create natural drama rather than the painfully scripted in-house fights. This, as a format, is great, but if it wants to hook in viewers, it would need to make the audiences genuinely care about the contestants – but only through their
The lights, the camera's, the designer clothes, and the beautiful models, all of these are contributing pieces of a runway fashion show. But the models who are strutting down the runway, showing off high standard fashion clothes, are not the only models that are out there. There are many types of models that work in this line of business. There are commercial models, catalog models, plus size models, parts models, and so many more. All models have something in common though, they all live a challenging life. Although many believe that being famous, or on the cover of top rated magazines will make you happy and feel fulfilled, living that form of life can create a feeling of having no privacy. There are many perks however, in working as a model. For example, if working as a runway model, it is not unheard of to have a salary of five hundred dollars per hour. That high of a salary is mainly only given if it is a very large name show. Catalog models can receive one hundred dollars to two hundred or more. The amount of an hourly salary is dependent upon the popularity of the company or brand being modeled and if the model has a good reputation. The life of a model is very busy and includes a multitude of challenges that the model needs to be ready for.
The casting process and knowledge of TV production companies is applicable to new contestants of a reality TV shows. Recurring contestants have already been placed in specific roles and a positive or negative parasocial relationship has already been developed by viewers. Enjoyment of a television shows derives from the viewer’s feelings towards the characters. Therefore, if viewers have a negative association with a recurring contestant, this can discourage audiences to view the
The participants are supposed to impersonate any celebrity in the funniest way possible, while also answering RuPaul's questions. At the end of each episode, they put on a complete outfit based on the chosen theme and walk the runway on the mainstage while being judged by RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Ross Mathews, Carson Kressley and the episode's guest judge. The contestants go backstage and record the spinoff series "RuPaul's drag race: Untucked" while the judges
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
