Plastic/cosmetic surgery is a vast area of practice that can be analyzed as a benefit to some individuals who desire to alter their appearance while others find this practice to be somewhat unnecessary. These procedures often times are a beneficial aid especially when many people live in a society where they are constantly judged and in many cases, a race against the clock not just men but for women. Plastic/cosmetic surgery carries many perks but with those perks can come great danger and overly-charged funds. With the consistent progression on technology. Many doctors and health experts use the innovation of lasers to do the light work for many surgical procedures in the society of present day. When a person is given a second chance at “being …show more content…
Plastic/cosmetic surgery can be performed in various methods such as; breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty(surgery of the nose),tummy tucks, facelifts, pigmentation(removal of marks and blemishes), and eyelid surgery. To dig a little deeper in terms of the different procedures, the most popular yet trendy procedures clients and/or patients often venture to are breast augmentation, liposuction, and one that has drastically climbed up the (must-have) list is the Brazilian buttlift (Lee, M). Published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons(ASP) in quote, Americans spent $12.6 billion on a total of $15.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2013, an increase of 3 percent since 2012. Some people see these procedures as a simple potentially life-changing means of improving self-esteem and addressing feelings of shame or discomfort over a perceived physical law. Others consider these practices nothing more than a reflection of unnecessary vanity and a very disturbing symptom of an unhealthy society obsession with the pursuit of beauty and perfection. Projected in 2014, Northwestern Medicine conducted a study involving eight cosmetic surgery and dermatology centers and thousands of procedures performed by twenty-three certified dermatologists, …show more content…
Although our diverse, multicultural society has become much more accepting of physical differences; those associated with ethnicity: an inmate sense of beauty, as well as an ingrained notion of attractiveness, defines the most desirable qualities in a lot of human beings. In reference, “Measuring up to the cultural idea of beauty has become necessary in this competitive, media-saturated world, especially for those in certain occupations.” As soon as the hair turns gray, the likelihood of getting a pink slip or being overlooked for a promotion increases. In the mindset of the man, competition among other men to date the most beautiful women, vice-versa, is quite common. Studies have shown time and time again that individuals tend to choose mates based on how attractive they are, or how they perceive themselves to be. Social scientists attribute much of this behavior to genetics, evolution, and the need to carry on the human race. Looks matter in the first stage of the competition, and attractiveness is a matter of survival, especially for women (Driscoll, Sally). Our society 's preoccupation with youth, beauty, and fitness affects each person differently. Some are oblivious, while others count every new wrinkle or wince every ounce gained. For most individuals body image plays a huge role in self-esteem and helps define others sense of self. Plastic surgeons state
In today society, beauty in a woman seems to be the measured of her size, or the structure of her nose and lips. Plastic surgery has become a popular procedure for people, mostly for women, to fit in social class, race, or beauty. Most women are insecure about their body or face, wondering if they are perfect enough for the society to call the beautiful; this is when cosmetic surgery comes in. To fix what “needed” to be fixed. To begin with, there is no point in cutting your face or your body to add or remove something most people call ugly. “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery” explored the desire of human to become beyond perfection by the undergoing plastic surgery. The author, Camille Pagalia, took a look how now days how Americans are so obsessed
5 Reasons You Should Be Getting Botox Wrinkles are not unavoidable; they are not a necessary part of aging. Some look to wrinkles as a sign of aged wisdom, but most men and women do not look forward to them. In fact, they are considered an unwelcome and distressful part of the aging process. For many years now, Botox has been available to treat these distasteful telling signs of our years on earth. Today, more people than ever are not only using Botox to treat wrinkles but to prevent them as well.
“Individuals are encouraged, even expected to make ‘lifestyle’ choices to maximize their life chance and simultaneously held responsible for managing and minimizing the risk associated with these decisions” (Leve, 2012:124). Media discourse is part of everyone’s day to day life, ideals of bodies are shown in all these media communication’s in order to appeal to the consumer. This could be considered to have made society become obsessed by looks, meaning that individuals feel the pressures to keep up with how people are represented in the media, for example recognized celebrities in magazines. According to The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, or BAAPS, there was a 16.5 percent increase of procedures in 2012. These statistics show that cosmetic surgery is becoming normalized, “This is how we live now. Anything that makes us feel better about our appearance, whether it involves needles, knives or acid, is acceptable’ (Wiseman, 2012)
Reader! It has come to my attention that the human world has been thrown into major conflicts surrounding the ethics of restoring the function of the face, using microsurgery, to those with severe disfigurements (Lamparello). This revolution of the science that led to my creation has almost rendered me speechless! No longer will patients feel hideous in their own skin because of unforeseen circumstances. Oh, how it is a horrid life to live, to be unaccepted by your fellow man, no matter how much YOU try and assimilate! Facial reconstruction is an innovative process that can improve the self-confidence of those whom were born naturally disfigured or were disfigured later in their lifetime. Face transplantation implores my interest simply because of how close it pounds at my wretched heart. When I escaped to a land far from the accursed laboratory I was “born” in, I found documents belonging to my creator that detailed his disgusted thoughts during my creation and final “birth”. It was exceptionally difficult to study his horror-stricken account of my hideous appearance (Shelley 34). When he’d lain his eyes on his obsession for the first time, he promptly disregarded his previous claims of my
Everyone in today’s society has pressure put on themselves because of the way they look. No matter if you are the most gorgeous/handsome person on this planet, that specific person has their own faults with their image. Financial success now a days puts pressure on others image. For instance, for women to work at “Twin Peaks,” “Hooters,” “Bone Daddy’s,” “Bombshells,” or any of the other sports bars, you either have to have one of the following, “Boobs, butt, pretty face, or a flat stomach.” If you are hired with one or the other, let’s face it… you will get talked about and or made fun of. As for men, it is pretty much the same. Just as the new “Tallywackers” that opened up in Dallas. People (women mostly) that go into the restaurant, get to choose their server before they sit down. To others that is completely unfair, because their body image depends on their pay that night. With how bad people are getting teased/bullied, changing to the opposite sex, getting plastic surgery and etc. no one seems to have tried to do anything about any of it. It is probably because we have all kinds of different ways with technology to make someone feel beautiful and good about themselves, that it does not need to be fixed. Though in some cases, others do not have money to do what
Some people have decided that plastic surgery may help improve someones mental health and therefore should be included in health care insurance, I think this is just absurd. I am all for the improvement of mental health care considering it is very lacking in this country but I also think that until there is more proof to this argument we should not include it in everyones medical insurance fees. America is having a crises when it comes to mental health care and already doesn't include mental health care in many insurance policies as it is and this far fetched idea may not be a good thing to add in for the general public until we have more evidence to support this topic. However, I don't think general cosmetic surgery should be allowed, I do see the benefit of other "cosmetic" surgeries such as gender reassignment surgery which I feel these are less cosmetic and more geared towards mental health.Basically, I generally disagree with the idea that cosmetic
Some people’s obsession with plastic surgery is obviously getting out of control. It starts with only getting one thing fixed or corrected but then quickly escalates and before you know it, a face that once was all-flesh turns into plastic. According to a study conducted by Nigel Mercer (2009), “The number of official cosmetic surgeries has more than tripled to 34,000 since 2003”. The two reasons why plastic surgery should be banned are because of its high health risks, and because of the additional pressure it puts on people to look picture-perfect.
Cosmetic surgery is becoming a trend world-wide today because humans can never be fully satisfied in terms of looks; however, this type of surgery has many serious perils rather than some benefits that we already know.
Cosmetic Surgery is a great discovery that has been around for many centuries. “The history of plastic surgery origins in the early 800 B.C. when surgeons in India restored noses to persons who had them taken off as a form of punishment.” (History of Cosmetic Surgery, 2008) Many people have used over the years cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to enhance their physical appearance weather it be for health problems associated with birth defect or problems that they have developed over the years or to even alter physical appearances for instance nose jobs and tummy tucks. There are numerous types of cosmetic surgery that can be done today in the United States, over the year’s surgeons techniques have improved dramatically. There are a number of pro’s and con’s that go along with cosmetic surgery, such as the amount of recovery time and the initial cost of surgery. Statistics also show that cosmetic surgery has grown so rapidly over the years it is phenomenal people who receive cosmetic surgery goes up by the millions every year. While there can be many related health risks due to cosmetic sugary, many times cosmetic surgery is necessary and its is made more affordable than thought to be.
All plastic surgery, whether it is breast augmentation, facial restructuring, or genital alteration, usually boils down to two arguments. The first being that you should love yourself, even with your imperfections, and shouldn’t change that with a surgical operation. The other argument is that it is your body and you can do whatever to it as long as it makes you happy. In regards to piercings, which I believe are in a different category than plastic surgery since usually they are easily reversible, I side with the second agreement. The individual has every right to change their body in a way that is self-expression. The individuals is choosing the piercing because it is what they want, not because they feel pressured by a societal expectation.
Plastic surgery is something the Western society is very familiar with. Billions of dollars are spent every year on these types of procedures The oldest type of plastic surgery is reconstructive, it developed out of need to treat wounded soldiers during wartimes and help them recover after. This type of plastic surgery is used to rebuild severely fractured bones, skin grafting, and implanting prosthetics. Plastic surgery was then introduced to treat birth defects like clef lip, and remove skin blemishes. This was the start of cosmetic plastic surgery, from the almost necessary correction of cleft lip for children to nose jobs, face lifts, and changing size of breasts on adults. Cosmetic surgery may be the most well-known form of plastic surgery today. These surgeries can affect the psychological health of the patient in a negative or positive way. Many plastic surgeries do have health effects on the patient, they can improve physical abilities of a patient using a prosthetic, or they can improve the self-esteem of the patient by improving their overall physical look. With any surgery there are possible risks and negative health effects, but it is up to the patient and one’s doctor to decide if they will take the risk and have the plastic surgery.
Beauty is a huge thing in the world today. Looks are the first thing someone notices about you and it is what they judge you on. It is just how our society is today. Unfortunately, it is what the world has come to. The biggest extreme that someone can go to to enhance their natural beauty is to have plastic surgery. People are choosing to have plastic surgery due to the influence of celebrities, selfies, bullying, how important beauty is in society and the health benefits of it as well.
My research can be helpful to those individuals who want to take a cosmetic surgery to figure out do they really need to have a cosmetic surgery and avoid unnecessary risks associated with cosmetic surgeries. In addition, my finding can help to improve care in those cosmetic surgery hospitals. With my findings cosmetic hospitals can have a deep understanding and provide useful and necessary supports to their patients, for example a psychologist is needed to talk to individuals before a cosmetic surgery to see whether they are suitable to have the cosmetic surgery or not because the motivations for the desire of cosmetic surgeries are able to show an individual’s psychological profile. Psychologists are also vital to individuals in the recovery stages to help minimise some possible mental
The world of cosmetic surgery is one of the largest and fastest growing industries worldwide, bringing in billions of dollars each year with cosmetic procedures that both men and women are having, in order to improve their looks, self esteem, and fulfilling societies norms and values. Cosmetic surgery has been accepted in certain cultures, this is a way of expressing who the person is. In my opinion cosmetic surgery is a good thing for individuals to pursue. As cosmetic surgery improves mental and physical well being, cosmetic surgeries through media, as cometic surgeries are improving health related issues, and creating opportunities for people.
In 2007 alone, Americans spent $13 billion on 11.7 million cosmetic procedures. This is a fact that, to me is astounding. In such a world of debt and loss of jobs this industry has flourished with out even a hint of slowing down, for some this has become and addiction. Many major television networks have covered the dramatic growth and addiction of the procedure, which such shows as “MTV’s True life I’m getting unusual plastic surgery” or “True life I hate my plastic surgery” as well as “botched” and “My strange addiction”. Now the shows show different spectrums of this billion-dollar industry. For example on an episode of My strange addiction on addict has had 125 different procedures to look like the Ken doll which has cost him up to nearly $160,000. On botched this show centers on procedures that have gone wrong. In once instance the show features a woman named Alicia that has had a breast augmentation that has gone completely wrong from the position of the implants to the location under the skin where they were put
