Persuasive Essay On Pitbulls

Any breed of dog can be taught to behave, but some breeds are used for the wrong thing which labels these helpless animals as “vicious” or “mean” or even “unteachable”. In America the most looked at dog is the pitbull, not because it is beautiful or thought of as friendly. People look at the pit bull because the media portrays them as vicious animals that are good for nothing. These animals are born into a world that does not like them. Though a lot of time is put into ensuring people that these dog are just normal dogs, when the media portrays something as bad the masses will believe it. Pit bulls are looked at by the media because they are used for horrible and gruesome acts of animal cruelty. These dogs have no control over what they are

taught. A pit bull though big and muscular is just a big lap dog. These dog are so feared “When Monique Baiss’ fiancé brought home a pit bull a year ago, she was scared to death. She had heard reports in the news about the dogs attacking people and did not want to risk one in her own home.”(Miller). Was the breed made for the wrong purpose definitely. These dogs were bred as fighting dogs. They were bred to fight with other dogs, and for bullfighting, but with the right training these dogs can be great companions. Though Pit Bulls were bred for fighting, they can overcome the vicious stereotype that is associated with the breed.
Having a pit bull or any other dog is a huge responsibility. A pit bull will with the right training be a great addition to most families. As Ernest Heppeny says “These dogs are very loyal to their owners and if treated and raised correctly are a very beautiful animals.” Most people don’t give this breed a chance because the media portrays them as vicious predators. These dogs are so loyal and friendly that at a elementary school “Abby was so reluctant to leave that her handler had to scoop her up in his arms, no small feat since the friendly, tail-wagging 2-year-old canine is a muscular, 45-pound pit bull.” (Baker Brown Jr.) These dogs do grow to be big animals and that can scare some families with small children, but Pit bulls are one of the most friendly dogs in the world. Most dogs respond to being raised with children. If a dog is brought into a home and raised with a child the dog will learn with the child, Pitbulls are great when this is done because they learn how to behave as does the child. Dogs are great therapeutic animal, but pit bulls are especially good for this because they can handle rough handling. Though they were bred for various things these animals are extremely capable of overcoming the vicious stereotype.
Though pit bulls are thought of as fighting dogs, any dog can be a fighter and any dog can be raised to be vicious.

As John Baker Brown jr. said “If any canine breed today can use some positive public relations, it's the pit bull, according to Troka, associate director of Emory's Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and adjunct assistant professor in the Graduate Institute for Liberal Arts.” Majority of the dog that have attacked have been trained to do so, but what's looked at is not the fact that theses dogs can be trained easily, what's looked at is the fact that these dog attack. In an interview with Ernest Hapenny when asked “Would you say the way a Pit Bulls acts depends on its owner?” he replied by saying “Yes. In my opinion and experience I believe Pit bulls are one of the most loyal dogs you could own. These dogs “aim to please” their owner and if the owner themselves have bad intentions then it will definitely affect and influence the dog.” Pit Bulls are innocent dogs that are being punished for following orders, orders given to them by the people who are supposed to be training them and keeping them safe. This breed of dog is extremely misunderstood, so much so that some of the states have banned the breed. Puppies are drowned because families and states “can’t afford” to have these “menacing” dogs running around, but the true problem is not in the dog it is in the

owner.
Though all these tests have been done and research put in it does not change that Pit Bulls are aggressive animals. With all the recent attacks on other animals and people Pit bulls should take some of the blame. These animals attack cats, other types of animals, and other dogs. “One of the dogs attacked Mr.Sox on March 6 and then went roaming on the riverbank. Cheeky later went missing and has never been found” (Gill) According to this source these dogs attack other petto. They run through neighborhoods intimidating children and some adults and wreaking havoc on other animals. These dogs were literally made to fight each other. Pit Bulls were bred for fighting in a ring with one another, but they are also used for bullfighting. Among other things these dogs have been known to attack humans. They are known to “lock” their jaw on whatever they bight. Small children are especially vulnerable because they are short and their faces are closer to the animals mouth, but these dogs are also strong and heavy so they have no problem knocking over a adult. Pit bulls are also one of the symbols for some gangs so they must be dangerous. Pit Bulls are thought of as big bullies that pick on smaller animals and people.
These dogs are untrainable dogs that will do whatever they want no matter who their owner is, but thats not true according to Ernest Hapenney when asked “What would you say is the reason that Pit bull attacks are becoming more common?” he said “There are numerous attacks from all kinds of different breeds of dogs which occur daily but Pit bulls are the ones who usually end up in the news or media. I believe this is because of such things like dog fighting and other illegal activities the breed is tied to and this puts a bad name on the dog instead of the owner who in the end is ultimately responsible.” So in the opinion of a dog breeder there is no certain thing that makes these dogs mean. Are Pit Bulls affiliated with gangs? Yes, some gangs do use them as a symbol. They use these animals because though their body mass is sometimes small these are powerful animals and when taught to do so they will attack, but why do we punish these innocent animals. It is not their fault that their owners chose them, they do not choose to be violent, but if someone teaches something to a dog chances are they will do as they are taught. Yes this breed was created for the “gentleman's” sport of dog fighting, but they do not need to be used for that. These helpless animals need to be taught the right thing not punished for the wrong thing.
In conclusion Pit bulls are not any more of a danger to humans than other dogs.

These dogs just need to be taught the right things so that they can overcome the “vicious” stereotype. Pit bulls are misunderstood because of how they are portrayed by the media, but “Baiss discovered that pit bulls, by their nature, are sweet, friendly dogs.” (Brown) Pit Bulls are large animals that can at sometimes be muscular and have scary looking faces, but just like a over muscular human. These dogs may look intimidating but it is just like the saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover” these dogs though muscular cannot really be judged by their look, and/or body type. Though these dogs were bred for the wrong reasons they are slowly overcoming the stereotype that portrays them as mean and menacing dogs. These dogs are becoming more popular, but as they become more popular there will also be people trying to prove that these dogs should not be around other dogs, animals, or humans. As Erest Hapenney said “Besides the owners themselves I think the media is very much responsible for the bad reputation of these animals. I’ve seen it too many times where the dog is portrayed to be such a bad animal.” after being asked “How would you say the media portrays pit bulls?”. Pit bulls have been proved to be the kindest and most loyal dog in America, as seen in the interview with Ernest the media will portray these dogs as bad just because they can. There are dogs out there stuck in the pound or

wandering on the street all because someone wrote that they are “vitouse” “menacing” and “horrific” animals that do not deserve homes, but if given the right attention and the right training Pit Bulls can be magnificent companions for any person with the right heart and intentions.
