Any breed of dog can be taught to behave, but some breeds are used for the wrong thing which labels these helpless animals as “vicious” or “mean” or even “unteachable”. In America the most looked at dog is the pitbull, not because it is beautiful or thought of as friendly. People look at the pit bull because the media portrays them as vicious animals that are good for nothing. These animals are born into a world that does not like them. Though a lot of time is put into ensuring people that these dog are just normal dogs, when the media portrays something as bad the masses will believe it. Pit bulls are looked at by the media because they are used for horrible and gruesome acts of animal cruelty. These dogs have no control over what they are …show more content…
taught. A pit bull though big and muscular is just a big lap dog. These dog are so feared “When Monique Baiss’ fiancé brought home a pit bull a year ago, she was scared to death. She had heard reports in the news about the dogs attacking people and did not want to risk one in her own home.”(Miller). Was the breed made for the wrong purpose definitely. These dogs were bred as fighting dogs. They were bred to fight with other dogs, and for bullfighting, but with the right training these dogs can be great companions. Though Pit Bulls were bred for fighting, they can overcome the vicious stereotype that is associated with the breed. Having a pit bull or any other dog is a huge responsibility. A pit bull will with the right training be a great addition to most families. As Ernest Heppeny says “These dogs are very loyal to their owners and if treated and raised correctly are a very beautiful animals.” Most people don’t give this breed a chance because the media portrays them as vicious predators. These dogs are so loyal and friendly that at a elementary school “Abby was so reluctant to leave that her handler had to scoop her up in his arms, no small feat since the friendly, tail-wagging 2-year-old canine is a muscular, 45-pound pit bull.” (Baker Brown Jr.) These dogs do grow to be big animals and that can scare some families with small children, but Pit bulls are one of the most friendly dogs in the world. Most dogs respond to being raised with children. If a dog is brought into a home and raised with a child the dog will learn with the child, Pitbulls are great when this is done because they learn how to behave as does the child. Dogs are great therapeutic animal, but pit bulls are especially good for this because they can handle rough handling. Though they were bred for various things these animals are extremely capable of overcoming the vicious stereotype. Though pit bulls are thought of as fighting dogs, any dog can be a fighter and any dog can be raised to be vicious.
As John Baker Brown jr. said “If any canine breed today can use some positive public relations, it's the pit bull, according to Troka, associate director of Emory's Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and adjunct assistant professor in the Graduate Institute for Liberal Arts.” Majority of the dog that have attacked have been trained to do so, but what's looked at is not the fact that theses dogs can be trained easily, what's looked at is the fact that these dog attack. In an interview with Ernest Hapenny when asked “Would you say the way a Pit Bulls acts depends on its owner?” he replied by saying “Yes. In my opinion and experience I believe Pit bulls are one of the most loyal dogs you could own. These dogs “aim to please” their owner and if the owner themselves have bad intentions then it will definitely affect and influence the dog.” Pit Bulls are innocent dogs that are being punished for following orders, orders given to them by the people who are supposed to be training them and keeping them safe. This breed of dog is extremely misunderstood, so much so that some of the states have banned the breed. Puppies are drowned because families and states “can’t afford” to have these “menacing” dogs running around, but the true problem is not in the dog it is in the …show more content…
owner. Though all these tests have been done and research put in it does not change that Pit Bulls are aggressive animals. With all the recent attacks on other animals and people Pit bulls should take some of the blame. These animals attack cats, other types of animals, and other dogs. “One of the dogs attacked Mr.Sox on March 6 and then went roaming on the riverbank. Cheeky later went missing and has never been found” (Gill) According to this source these dogs attack other petto. They run through neighborhoods intimidating children and some adults and wreaking havoc on other animals. These dogs were literally made to fight each other. Pit Bulls were bred for fighting in a ring with one another, but they are also used for bullfighting. Among other things these dogs have been known to attack humans. They are known to “lock” their jaw on whatever they bight. Small children are especially vulnerable because they are short and their faces are closer to the animals mouth, but these dogs are also strong and heavy so they have no problem knocking over a adult. Pit bulls are also one of the symbols for some gangs so they must be dangerous. Pit Bulls are thought of as big bullies that pick on smaller animals and people. These dogs are untrainable dogs that will do whatever they want no matter who their owner is, but thats not true according to Ernest Hapenney when asked “What would you say is the reason that Pit bull attacks are becoming more common?” he said “There are numerous attacks from all kinds of different breeds of dogs which occur daily but Pit bulls are the ones who usually end up in the news or media. I believe this is because of such things like dog fighting and other illegal activities the breed is tied to and this puts a bad name on the dog instead of the owner who in the end is ultimately responsible.” So in the opinion of a dog breeder there is no certain thing that makes these dogs mean. Are Pit Bulls affiliated with gangs? Yes, some gangs do use them as a symbol. They use these animals because though their body mass is sometimes small these are powerful animals and when taught to do so they will attack, but why do we punish these innocent animals. It is not their fault that their owners chose them, they do not choose to be violent, but if someone teaches something to a dog chances are they will do as they are taught. Yes this breed was created for the “gentleman's” sport of dog fighting, but they do not need to be used for that. These helpless animals need to be taught the right thing not punished for the wrong thing. In conclusion Pit bulls are not any more of a danger to humans than other dogs.
These dogs just need to be taught the right things so that they can overcome the “vicious” stereotype. Pit bulls are misunderstood because of how they are portrayed by the media, but “Baiss discovered that pit bulls, by their nature, are sweet, friendly dogs.” (Brown) Pit Bulls are large animals that can at sometimes be muscular and have scary looking faces, but just like a over muscular human. These dogs may look intimidating but it is just like the saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover” these dogs though muscular cannot really be judged by their look, and/or body type. Though these dogs were bred for the wrong reasons they are slowly overcoming the stereotype that portrays them as mean and menacing dogs. These dogs are becoming more popular, but as they become more popular there will also be people trying to prove that these dogs should not be around other dogs, animals, or humans. As Erest Hapenney said “Besides the owners themselves I think the media is very much responsible for the bad reputation of these animals. I’ve seen it too many times where the dog is portrayed to be such a bad animal.” after being asked “How would you say the media portrays pit bulls?”. Pit bulls have been proved to be the kindest and most loyal dog in America, as seen in the interview with Ernest the media will portray these dogs as bad just because they can. There are dogs out there stuck in the pound or
wandering on the street all because someone wrote that they are “vitouse” “menacing” and “horrific” animals that do not deserve homes, but if given the right attention and the right training Pit Bulls can be magnificent companions for any person with the right heart and intentions.
Pit bulls, the most dangerous dog to ever live. People like to train Pit Bulls to fight other dogs until they are either hurt or dead. The owners that train the dogs are usually the ones that make the dog turn out to be vicious and dangerous. “Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized, approximately 40% of whom are Pit Bulls”(Moore). Pit Bulls don’t know better to understand which is right from wrong since they’re being raised up to fight and protect. Pit Bulls aren’t good family dogs due to the power of their strength and that they could attack at any moment.
Pit bulls, like any other dog, grow into their temperament. The way the dog is raised rounds out their character and general temperament. According to the “American Temperament Test Society: Pit bulls pass temperament tests 84.1% of the time, which ranks them slightly better than golden retrievers (83.8%) and cocker spaniels (81.7%), and well above miniature schnauzers (78.6%),” (The Biting Truth). Myths have generated atrocious attitudes towards this breed for years. The nature of the dog to be a protector to children and the bulky build of pit bulls makes them a very easy breed to target. These opinions ...
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), there is a “great deal of confusion associated with the label ‘Pit Bull,’” as it does not refer to a single breed of dog, but rather to a group of breeds with similar characteristics1. These characteristics include short hair, a wide skull and shoulders, muscle definition, stocky build and a deep jawline, the combination of which create a dog that manages to strike fear into a perfect stranger. The term ‘Pit Bull’ is derived from the bulldog, which was originally bred as a hunting dog for large game, but has since developed into a “loyal companion rather than a working dog.”1 Their history as “gripping dogs” for hunters follows them into modern society, as many of these dogs have been inhumanely pitted against one another as well as other animals for sport and for human entertainment1. It is because of these illegal fighting rings that ‘Pit Bull’ type breeds have become the subje...
Many people associate a negative connotation with the dog breed “pit bull.” These dogs are thought to be dangerous and problematic. However, much of this can be attributed to the mass amounts of negative media attention that pit bull breeds receive as opposed to other breeds of dogs that can be just as dangerous. For example, The National Canine Research Council did a four-day study on dog-bite repo...
Perhaps the reason why pit bulls are feared by society is because we are afraid of what they are associated with. Pit bulls are often thought of as a gangster’s pet, a role in violent and illegal activities. People stereotype this breed because of the unfortunate acts of few. In contrast, society needs to understand that they are being racist towards a breed of dog. Denver’s systematic killing of pit bulls could be compared to the actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust.
Most of the dogs on this list are common household pets, like the Labrador retriever, and are normally non-aggressive and very friendly. Many times these dogs show no sign of aggression and pose no threat to society. Perspective One Breed-specific laws were put in place with the expectation to help prevent dog bites and attacks. The State and Federal government both came to the conclusion that this is a positive way to promote safety from dog attacks. “Both state and federal courts consistently uphold the constitutionality of breed-specific pit bull laws.... ...
When most people today see a pitbull they see it as a monster who could snap at any moment. Something that they should protect themselves and their family from; but that is not necessarily true. Is any one man or woman exactly like the last? A human being’s personality along with their capacity for violence is molded by their past and how they were treated growing up; pit bulls are no different. In today’s society pitbulls are unfairly discriminated against because they are favored among street gangs and dog fighting rings, leaving a staggering number of loyal and loving dogs homeless or mistreated.
Currently, pit bulls have been reported by the media with very horrific and disturbing news of having attacked a child or being shot by a police due to aggression while some are reported to have been abused or neglected by its owners (Forderer and Unkelbach 534). And because the reports keep coming with heated discussions, more and more people have forged a frightening image of pit bulls even to the extreme of refusing to take care of such breed. Pit bull advocates claim that the dogs get a bad reputation considering that people should learn the dogs are not inherently aggressive. What the pit bull advocates would like to point is that the owners of the pit bulls should be considered guilty for mishandling of their own dogs. There are owners of pit bulls that even encourage the dog to be aggressive in order to fight and protect them in a wrong manner and wrong degree of training (Forderer and Unkelbach 536). Pit bull advocates claimed that a well socialized and well trained pit bull would be very intelligent and could be one of the gentle dogs imaginable.
...ports Illustrated cover photo of a pit bull (Pit Bull Rescue Central, "Breed Information”). Dog fighting made a comeback during the 1980s and the pit bull became the favorite macho dog for dog fighters. The dogs were trained to kill or be killed. Pit bulls were also the preferred guard dog for gangs, thugs and criminals. Since the supporters and detractors of pit bulls hold such disparate opinions regarding the ferocity of the breeds, it is only hoped that further discussion and education will help resolve the sad fate that awaits these unfortunate animals. Simply placing all the blame on the breeds will not solve the problems of dog fighting, overbreeding, aggressive training, and excessive euthanizations. Lastly, the biased, sensationalistic publicity of horrific dog attacks which has destroyed the reputation of the once beloved All American Dog must cease.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. (Davis)
What do you think of when I say the word pitbull? Do you picture a cute happy dog, wagging its tail happy to see you? Or do you see a mad dog, foaming mouth lunging at small child? If you are a owner of a pitbull then you probably see the happy cute dog. But if you don't own one then chances are you see pitbulls as mean dogs who are a threat to society. The media has painted a picture in our heads that it's in a pitbulls blood to be aggressive. Due to this false accusation, certain cities have banned breeds labeled as “aggressive”. If someone is caught owning a banned breed, the dog is usually euthanized. This is known as Breed Specific Laws or otherwise known as BSL.
Roughly about 30% of all dogs are pit bulls that are taken to shelters which depending on the area that figure can raise up to 60%. Not every pit bull rescued were a part of dog fighting but John Goodwin, of the Humane Society, says most of the dogs have scars and marks to show for their fights. The fate of these dogs remain to a judge that determines whether the fight dogs need to be euthanized. Since these dogs were trained to be aggressive and attacks other animals 9 times out of 10 they are to be put down. The dogs that haven’t been a part of dog fighting fit into a family and shows no sign of
Even though pit bulls are the majority of dog attacks anybody hears about, they are loyal and caring dogs. All they want is the love and approval of their owners. They will do anything that they are told to do. Their strength, stamina, and speed fuel the passion they have for their owners. Pit bulls are not vicious by nature; they are good guard dogs fueled by the love for their family; and, they are definitely loyal friends. They have a lower temperament than many other well-known breeds; therefore, they are not vicious by nature at all. They are very strong guard dogs. Pit bulls are known to be a scary breed, so people stay away from them. They have an amazing amount of speed and stamina that they can use to chase predators away, too. Pit bulls are the best friends anyone could ask for. They are loyal and loving creatures that just want to please their family. They are good dogs to train to be around children. If the children are a part of the dog’s family, then the dog will protect the child at all costs. Pit bulls are a good breed to have as a family
It is the bad owners that give the pit bull a bad name. Contrary to that popular belief, dangerous animal behavior is the function of inherently dangerous dog owners, not inherently dangerous dogs. One fact that supports this is that pit bulls are the dogs most often shot during drug raids(TELLINGS v. Toledo). Besides the pit bulls that are owned by drug dealers for status symbols and protection, many pit bulls are owned by people that breed them for fighting. These poor dogs have a very slim chance of living a normal and happy life. This is not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners that should not have the dog, or should care for them better. The dogs that are forced to fight and are conditioned to defend themselves or die. When these dogs get loose, everything is a threat to them and they defend themselves in the name of survival. If golden retrievers were bred and raised with the sole purpose of fighting to the death, they would be just as dangerous as pit bulls. On the contrary, if all pit bulls were bred and treated as family dogs, they would have the same reputation as golden retrievers, if not better as the statistics found in the temperament test above
First, I would like to make a point to clarify our topic. It’s not about how large dogs are better than small dogs or small dogs are better than large ones. It’s about how aggressive they are towards us and other animals. I have a large dog of my own, in fact I love having her around. But, this doesn’t make her an angel at all!
