The battle for children today is within the mind. Biologically everything links to the mind. How we learn, how we preserve ourselves, how we emotionally feel, and how we will act on our emotions all begin within our brains. Unfortunately we do not have the power to read children 's minds or receive a special tingly feeling when something is wrong with them. Problems can sport as fast as toddler can make a mess. The topic of mental health is almost taboo in our culture, and adding children to topic is like a semi-truck driving on thin ice. Most people don’t introduce themselves “Hi, I’m Carol. I work as at the county library and I have fighting depression for ten years now”. It’s awkward. But why? If a person breaks their arm, people at the grocery store will ask how it happened. However if someone suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and must touch a open and close their car door seven times before going into the store will only receive odd looks. Children will pick up on subtle things as their parent or caregiver being uncomfortable or skeptical of mental health issues. “When services are provided,” Cuellar claims “ they often focus on one dimension of a child’s mental health,such as symptoms, without sufficient attention to long-term outcomes such as educational success and employment.” While education is not the only important issue of children with or at-risk of developing mental health issue, Cuellar points out the importance of education in the long run of childhood development. The Journey to tackling mental health in children is a rough road. Parents and caregivers, teachers, and professionals need to work together to prevent, intervene, and treat mental health issue for all children - those who aren’t considered at risk, those who are at risk, and those who have. Mental illness in the classroom has become an issue that is important for teachers, not just parents, to look out for. According to Cinda Johnson, “Studies indicate that 1 in 5 adolescents have some sort of serious emotional, behavioral, or mental health problem”(Johnson). When adolescents spend half of their days in school, it is important that their teachers take the time to notice unusual signs their students may be showing them. Teachers have the opportunity and the influence to help students work toward a better future. In Graziano’s article, however, the teacher’s influence was spun the wrong way and led to mistreatment of the six-year-old boy and his learning disability. I think we should really value the mental health of our children in the society if we want to develop this great Nation. The psychological well-being of our children affects us both directly and indirectly whether we accept this fact or not. It is very important that we ensure that our beloved children have the capabilities to adapt to the stresses, working productively both in school and also contribute to the developments in the community. Problems associated with mental illness or health are very common in this society especially in the institutions of learning be it high schools, colleges or even universities. Some health problems associated with mental health include depressions, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders and at time schizophrenia. Mental health is defined as ‘not being present when psychological distress or maladaptive behavior is appropriate given a child’s age’ by The Health Advisory Service Report (HAS Report, 1995, Cited in Dogra, Parkin, Gale and Frake, 2008). This definition offers a fundamental basis to consider the source of a child’s mental health. In addition, The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2001, Cited in Dogra et al.) mentioned that mental health is a key component of health through which individuals are able recognise their own abilities. Mental disorders can affect mental health in numerous ways and are able to prevent or even reduce the likelihood of accomplishing any goals such as coping with the stresses of life.
Student’s lack of success can occur for many reasons but some believe that that it stems from poverty. Many families are forced to work more than one job in order to maintain the household and the children end up staying at home without adult supervision. Adult supervision is needed in order to provide structure, rules, and teach children basic social skills. Social skills are essential in our daily life as it is what we use to communicate with people to get what we want or need. In my experience, I have also noticed that the majority of at risk youth come from single mom or grandparent homes. I have experienced talking to single moms or guardians who do not implement discipline at home because they do not know how to discipline. Other times, they feel bad that the child’s other parent or parents are not in the picture so they try to composite by not enforcing consequences. The mental health of a child is another important concept that schools should consider when they are dealing with troubled youth. Many students have experienced trauma in their lives that has never healed. Teaching children to properly express their emotions is something that sometimes parents do not know how to teach. Having mental health services such as counseling is a great way to help the student heal from the trauma that has been keeping them from being successful. Schools should require all student to receive a mental health screening along with their physical in order to know the student’s history and to understand and help
Without screening these children may go an entire lifetime without ever knowing that they have an illness. Children can be at risk and no one will notice because they didn’t take the time out to screen and ask a few questions. “ Children can benefit from depression screening as early as second grade” (James Mazza) “ If schools don’t screen their students don’t have the opportunity to proactively identify themselves as at risk” (Pros and cons, 1). Children are a crucial part of society. They participate in almost all aspects of a society whether it is in schools, community activities, or in the workforce. However, not all children develop the same skills and are granted the same opportunities as others because of a mental illness. Mental illnesses are as serious as physical illnesses and they negatively affect a child’s life. There are a variety of mental illnesses children may have with different levels of severity; mental illnesses hinder childhood development, and they affect a child’s social and home life.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
A young, teenage girl sits with her friends, talking, laughing, and making jokes. She seems completely normal and happy, even. What people don’t know is that this is nothing but a mask covering the loneliness that seems to run through her veins, and the unexplainable sadness that never goes away. She fears speaking of it, of admitting the uncontrollable hatred she feels for everything about herself, so much that she contemplates ending it all. The fact is, suicide is the third leading cause for death in people under the age of twenty-five. Our country needs to stop seeing this as a casual thing. Depression, anxiety, and suicide in youth are real and serious issues that we need to be more aware of in today’s society.
Children, like any other age group, have their numbers steadily increasing with time. They too face the same issues as adults and need an intervention to help them recover. Children have the right to be prevented from mental health complications and the families and health systems should work together to enhance that. Enhanced systems should be able to detect such conditions early enough and provide interventions that solve the problem in the long run. Efficient detection systems can also help establish causes of mental issues among children and provide an opportunity for preventive health approaches.
