The battle for children today is within the mind. Biologically everything links to the mind. How we learn, how we preserve ourselves, how we emotionally feel, and how we will act on our emotions all begin within our brains. Unfortunately we do not have the power to read children 's minds or receive a special tingly feeling when something is wrong with them. Problems can sport as fast as toddler can make a mess. The topic of mental health is almost taboo in our culture, and adding children to topic is like a semi-truck driving on thin ice. Most people don’t introduce themselves “Hi, I’m Carol. I work as at the county library and I have fighting depression for ten years now”. It’s awkward. But why? If a person breaks their arm, people at the grocery store will ask how it happened. However if someone suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and must touch a open and close their car door seven times before going into the store will only receive odd looks. Children will pick up on subtle things as their parent or caregiver being uncomfortable or skeptical of mental health issues. “When services are provided,” Cuellar claims “ they often focus on one dimension of a child’s mental health,such as symptoms, without sufficient attention to long-term outcomes such as educational success and employment.” While education is not the only important issue of children with or at-risk of developing mental health issue, Cuellar points out the importance of education in the long run of childhood development. The Journey to tackling mental health in children is a rough road. Parents and caregivers, teachers, and professionals need to work together to prevent, intervene, and treat mental health issue for all children - those who aren’t considered at risk, those who are at risk, and those who have. With a stigma associated with mental health and having mental health issues some parents may have trouble with want to evaluate their child 's mental health, but early preventions steps may prove beneficial for children, as the mind is more plastic during early development. While treating behavioral issue of those who have or at risk of mental health issue, we also need to focus on their academic improvement as well.
