Light pollution is one of the inevitable problems of the prosperous cities all around the world, including Hong Kong. The brightness of the night sky in Hong Kong is 82 times higher than the International Astronomical Union standard and the average night sky in urban is 15 times brighter than rural area (Daniel, Michael, Marina and Gregory, 2010), where Causeway bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok, are especially severe. Street lights, car headlights and advertising lights are the major sources of serious light pollution. In between, advertising lights are the easiest to be reduced while they impact on people’s lives the most. This essay will argue that advertising lights should be switched off after midnight to protect residents’ health and ecology. …show more content…
The night scene draws tourists’ attention for its dazzle and advertising lights are the fundamental component of it. The tourist industry in Hong Kong as well as the commercial companies that used advertising lights for advertisement can be benefited through the present of advertising lights. However, this is not a persuasive reason supporting that advertising light need to switch on at midnight. The major criteria for being an incredible travel destination depends on the overall scenic spot, cuisine, natural scenery or culture and fabulous night view is just part of the factors. Moreover, it is unusual for tourists to go out at midnight after they have a fully packed travel schedule. Most of them would choose to sleep and take a rest rather than enjoying the night view after midnight. Therefore, the effectiveness of advertising night after midnight is very …show more content…
Businesses in some areas are only operating at night and unavoidable to switch on the advertising light after midnight. some areas like Lan Kwai Fong or night market in Mong Kok. Setting up a range of luminance limitation by using advertising light is reasonable for them to. Some countries like Frankfurt and London is using zoning approach to limit the emission of light. Take London as an example, different areas are classified into corresponding zones by categorize the type of land use with appropriate luminance limit. For those area with high demand for lighting, the limit will set lower than the others (Environment Bureau of HKSARG, 2013). Hong Kong can learn from these flexible approach and apply it to those special cases in order to allow the use advertising light within a luminance limit. The ultimate aim is still to reduce light emission and provide a peaceful night environment for all Hong Kong
Since the beginning of time, human beings were trying to find ways how to make their lives better. Technological improvements and inventions brought us a lot of benefits, but with benefits come consequences. Side effects are different types of pollution that we , as humans, are aware of. There are six kinds of pollution: land, water, noise, thermal, air, and light. The article "Our Vanishing Night," by Verlyn Klikenborg shows us the consequences of light pollution and completely neglects the positive aspects of artificial light. The author starts with a history lesson where he juxtaposes modern world to England in 1800. Back in the day, the most populated city in England, London, didn't suffer from light pollution since there
A common argument made against standard time is that daylight savings time prevents road accidents because of the abundance of natural light at times that most people drive. However, is it worth it to disrupt the circadian rhythm so that drivers have more natural light? The governments have implemented lighted highways and roads and cars are equipped with headlights to aid in vision. While lighted highways consume energy, the claim that daylight savings time contributes to less energy consumption is contradicted by research efforts. Indiana did not adopt daylight savings time until 2006, thus making it the perfect environment for a study on the correlation of energy consumption and daylight savings time. According to Brian Handwerk, the “lighting demand dropped, but the warmer hour of extra daylight tacked onto each evening led to more air-conditioning use, which canceled out the gains from reduced lighting and then some.” Along with this study, researchers have argued that energy consumption may be lower in the evening, but consumption goes up in the dark mornings thus making the results equal. According to another study conducted by Hendrik Wolff, everywhere that has air conditioning takes a loss in regards to daylight savings time. In the long run, day light savings time does not have a significant impact on energy consumption thus being
Claim: Improving the racial climate in our educational system needs to be a top priority. These students must be prepared for the real world upon graduation and that includes interacting and working with many diverse groups. It is our responsibility to insure that our students become the best possible people they can be, and this includes teaching them diversity and cultural acceptance. However, we need to make sure that we are going about this in the right ways and not causing more issues along the way. Color-blindness is not the solution to racism, and this is proven throughout the chapter and the journals of the students in the study outlined.
Making a decision for the future can be hard, but it can be even harder when people are torn between their passions and meeting other’s expectations. In today’s generation, most students are expected to have their career chosen by the time they are out of High School. They are trained to plan and map out their entire lives. Yet, college students still end up having an undecided major by the time they start their freshman year in college. A huge issue that is present in today’s society is that college students chose their major for the wrong reasons. Parents pressure students to pursue careers in business, medicine, politics, and law; however, unless practiced with passion, those careers are pointless.
Over the years, the cost of college tuition has been one of the central issues limiting students, like me, from obtaining the best education that one could receive. Usually, this results in students settling for a school nearby rather than being able to have the choice to go to the best one in which they were accepted into, due to such skyrocket prices. Much of this problem or concern has to do with out-of-state tuition being much higher than in-state tuition, sometimes almost doubling the price of in-state tuition! Therefore, students are more pressured to remain in state rather than go to out-of-state schools that may offer a better education.
...ted downwards and not spread out into the atmosphere. This procedure can capture the excessive light and could help with improving these atmospheric particles that cause the blurring in the sky. Also if someone cant sleep without a night lamp, buying a colored one would be better. The darker the color is the less exposure it has and uses less energy.
High school education is for students to learn the basic information that is needed to prepare them for college. It is critical for students to feel that it isn’t a waste of time for them to wake up and go to high school everyday. Is it right for students to not come to school because they feel high school is a waste of their time? Majority of students has also felt that the courses they are attending aren’t giving them enough information that will be useful beyond high school. Shouldn’t students be in classes that will benefit them in the future? Should students be able to know what might be their strengths, and weaknesses in the courses that are required to be taken for a certain major? High schools should offer useful courses because it
Since women are naturally maternal and nurturing they obtained the role as the family’s primary caretaker, while the men became the providers for the home. For centuries these gender roles were strictly stuck too. Women stayed at home and did house work as their husbands went out and had a career. Thankfully, society is starting to shed this ideology on gender roles. More women are starting to work proactively in the “mans world”, but they are straining to advance to high executive positions throughout corporate companies. A lot of this is due to a women’s fertility. While the stereotype of women being strictly housewives has diminished, the mentality that women are too maternal is prevalent in business life. Due to this outlook women are perceived to be unable to take on the stressful pressures business prevails, giving reason to why for years women were only secretaries and clerks in business where they received little room for progression in their careers. A great deal of reasoning behind this struggle is due to the Great Man Theory. Author of “Inequality Between Genders in the Executive Suite in Corporate America: Moral and Ethical Issues” Dean Elmuti, describes this theory as society’s perception that men are the superior beings and should be the protectors and providers, while women are weak, helpless and should stay home to raise the family (1). Consequently, this view has led to an increased emergence of men as business managers and the leaders of the country, thus defending the male dominance in the corporate industry, but also preserving the discrimination against women entering the business domain. This theory and mentality that women can’t handle business life is infuriating. However, what is more distressing is due to...
Interior design is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. There is simply nothing more enjoyable than to relax in your own well-decorated and organized home.
Interesting fact: 86 percent of American adults drive cars and 72 percent believe that people need to limit emitting greenhouse gases (Winke). Where is the connection between American thought and action regarding climate change?
According to a 1997 survey conducted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, “[A curfew] provides officers an opportunity to intervene with potential issues before problems develop. Periodic sweeps remind the public about the law officer. Curfew enforcement has, in large part, become a part of routine enforcement” (US Conference of Mayors). Most adolescents do not see a logical point in having a curfew, but they don’t always realize that parents and other adults only want what is best for them. Curfews allow for parents to keep an eye on their children, keeping them safe and away from harmful situations. It is important to inform others, adults and teenagers alike, of the advantages of a curfew, in order to allow everyone to take better care of themselves
Imagine you 're waiting at a street light and you look over to your left and see a middle age women smoking a cigaret in her car, what you don’t see is her child in the backseat inhaling the excess smoke, slowly but surely rotting his lungs. Secondhand smoke has been a massive issue for the health of numerous U.S citizens for many years now. In past decades the smoking of tobacco was a very big part of everyday life, it was very much a social norm. The effects smoking had on one were not yet well known, so finding a place where no one was smoking was very difficult. As technology advanced, the U.S. population became aware of the effects smoking cigarettes had. Many organizations and foundations, like QuitlineNC and the American Lung Association were created to help smokers notice the terrible effects smoking had on their lives and the lives of those close to them. These groups have done a good job on informing people of the dangers and risks of smoking, now its up to the people to take into account what they are telling them.
Light pollution happened slowly at first which was several decades ago it was a process that was hardly noticeable. A light here, a light there, burning way into the dark nighttime realm, helping us see in the darkness when people all their our beds fast asleep. The process still continues today, with little thought ever given to what we are stealing away. Our intentions are good but our methods need adjustment, and they needs to be done immediately. In fact, our methods should have been changed years ago, but nearly everyone has resisted, perhaps due to a profound lack of awareness. The use of too many lights at night can cause environmental pollution, known as light pollution. Light pollution can block our ability to see the original shining stars, which can affect people’s discoveries in astronomy. But since the lights are also very important for us at night when we are driving or walking alone on a street, I think there are certainly some solutions for protecting our natural environment while we can also use the lights at the same time. To admire the beautiful stars in the sky instead of looking at it in a picture, we can start to save energy resources by cutting off some unnecessary lights such as commercial building lights, outdoor residential lights, and by using shielded light to reduce the amount of light that we use in certain areas.
Travel light, it will be easier to get around and you will be less likely to be robbed.
Our planet is suffering from severe pollution, which ranges from contaminated air, water and soil as well. Humans are doing nothing to reduce the amount of pollution that is harming our earth. To understand how pollution works first you must understand that there are different types of pollution. The most common types of pollution and the ones that I will be focusing on which are the ones doing the most harm to our planet are air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination and littering. In order to help out and reduce pollution in our planet people need to be more aware of what these problems are and about the severe damages that they are causing our planet. Before industrialization really jumped into place and had an effect on large cities, nature had its own way of cleaning up its own air and itself. Wind scattered gases, rain washed many substances and the rest dissolved into the ground; while plants absorbed carbon dioxide and made it into oxygen. With big cities growing more every time and with more towns that were becoming more industrialized a lot of more waste began to be released into the environment and the atmosphere and soon this was more than enough for nature to handle. In order to stop and reduce pollution people need to understand the damage that it is causing our environment and our planet as well. People need to be more aware of how they can help out and do their part in reducing these problems that are causing our planet to die slowly with people not even noticing it.
