Ethics? Ethics. Ethics are the set of moral principles that guide a person’s behavior and help them choose between what is right and what is wrong. When many people think of morality, they think of their own religious beliefs. Due to the fact that there are hundreds of different religions, there are also hundreds of different views of ethics, not to mention those who have no religious affiliation at all. Considering that there are so many different methods to approach and think about ethics, a class taught at Paloma Valley High School would be beneficial for those who want to better their critical thinking skills and broaden their horizons to other possibilities. An ethics course may be viewed as pointless due to people being under the belief that ethics is directly related to religion and only religion. Murdoch even decides to pose the question, “Is morality dependent on religion, or can it be achieved outside religion?”(361). She believes there is a strong connection between religion and ethics. This simply is not true, morality encompasses many aspects of life and is not entirely religious. Religion, for some, may be what guides their moral compass, but not it is not true for everyone. A high school program that conveys most, if not all, of the numerous influential factors that make up an individual 's morals, would give the students who take it a valuable life skill. Being able to recognize the reasons behind someone else’s behavior is essential in everyday communication. Additionally, several people may think that this ethics class will be teaching all of the students who take it a specific code of morals and will be virtually brainwashing them to think a certain way. Nevertheless, that is not what this course is about. It is to teach students to figure out what actions they make are right and wrong for themselves. To get the students of Paloma Valley High School critically analyzing their own choices, understanding the choices others make, and thinking for themselves, an ethics class must be introduced into the curriculum. Teaching the different ways to approach ethics to young people will help them later in life when they enter into professional settings. In order to become a well rounded individual you must be aware of the moral problems in society and be able to evaluate them. Respectively, this class has allowed me to do so, through readings and videos, providing my own insight on many moral issues. This class has shown me there are many different interpretations to right and wrong, and hard evidence must be agued to be persuasive. Throughout the course of this class we looked into multiple philosophers such as Kant, Aristotle, and Sandel, a professor at Harvard.
“Once a teacher has identified an opening in the curriculum for exploring a moral value, the next step is to plan an effective lesson or unit around that value. That means selecting good materials (Lickona, 1991, p. 170)”. I feel this book is exactly that, a riveting story that can expose students to great moral values.
Ethics are basically the procedures of personal acts that are based on ideas or a person, about what is ethically good or bad and they are range of statistics that involves these statistics. So basically, ethics are rules a person sets for himself or herself about what is ethically right or wrong. They involve legal issues and if something is illegal, it does not always mean that it is unethical, consequently if something is ethical, it does not mean it is legal.
We believe all people have the freedom to make choices in their life, however, the question posed today is whether we have the freedom to choose our death. Some say absolutely. We should have the freedom to decide how we spend our last days. If they’re filled with pain, debilitating, and cause hardship on our loved ones, we should have the right to opt out. Others take the view that we didn’t choose our birth, therefore our death isn’t ours to choose either. This has caused much debate as moral, ethical and legal ramifications come into the mix. This in turn has led to defining the process under two different terms for legal purposes. They are euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Throughout our lives we make many choices, all having effects. The choices we make might not always affect us. Out of which, some of them might affect other people and those choices are which the person has to decide on what they believe is right and wrong and this is referred as ethical choices. For example, if a person sees someone getting beaten up by a group of people, should he either walk away or take action and if he does take action, there is a chance that harm might come his way. In this scenario the choice he makes can be called an ethical choice. This raises the question of what is ethically right and what isn’t. The right to choose is one of the most hotly contested ideas in America. While abortion is the topic that usually comes to mind, the right to die is a debate that is becoming more prevalent in our society every day. Dr. Kevin Fitzpatrick writes in “Euthanasia: we can live without it…,” that people should not be able to choose if they can die. He defends his ideas by showing how euthanasia is not a fully regulated practice and not always done legally. He goes on to say that most people who choose euthanasia do not have terminal illnesses and are usually just unhappy with their lives. However, Dr. Philip Nitschke disagrees in “Euthanasia: Hope you never need it, but be glad the option is there,” saying that we should have euthanasia as a viable option. My claim: I argue in favor of the right to die. If someone is suffering from a terminal illness that is: 1) causing them great pain – the pain they are suffering outweighs their will to live (clarification below) 2) wants to commit suicide, and is of sound mind such that their wanting is reasonable. In this context, “sound mind” means the ability to logically reason and not act on impulses or emotions. 3) the pain cannot be reduced to the level where they no longer want to commit suicide, then they should have the right to commit suicide. It should not be considered wrong for someone to give that person the tools needed to commit suicide.
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.

The issue of whether ethics can be taught or not has been an argument that has been questioned by many individuals for thousands of years. The philosopher, Socrates himself debated this question. His view on the issue was simply that ethics is a trait in ourselves in knowing what a person ought to do in different situations in life. Socrates’ point of view on the matter of ethics is important because it is a common belief amidst people today that ethics is a trait in ourselves that tells us from right and wrong and what to do in certain situations. In a study done by psychologist James Rest in the field of moral development, he found that a lot of the ideas that were originally raised by Socrates were accurate with the use of evidence based on his research. Rest concluded that dramatic changes usually take place that deal with problem-solving strategies in young adulthood for the average human being.
